evening all,
can anyone recommend any aftermarket brake pads and maybe discs?
i cannot afford any big brake kits or anything extreme but i\'m really after some new pads as my mintex extreme pads seem to be coming to the end of their life.
i have been very impressed with them i must say but they aren\'t made anymore :(
hawk seem to be a good way to go and i see MRP reccomend them however they are said to "shred" your wheels!!
EBC have not been reccomended much on here and the range seems well... strange.
im thoroughly confused but i would welcome any help peeps. :3Confused
Not meaning to hijack the thread mate but am also interested to know, as i\'m still on the standard discs and pads and have a slightly warped front drivers disc so looking for alternatives but not too costly either so look forward to any comments too :)
well my discs were nearly new but stock when i started.
brakes were very very distance and numb and i was worried that they were litteraly about to hit metal! took them off and they had 80% left!! good ol\'stockers.
went for mintext extreme as they were of new design and not only used on lambos and astons last year but were also said to produce minimal dust.
one year on and they have been great even on track with no abs working on my car! one of my rear discs has a dimple all the way round for some reason so thats part of the reason why im thinking they may be dieing. :(
I\'ve got EBC RedStuff pads on my FD, which are the sporty version. I think YellowStuff is the more track-orientated compound and Green the more long-lived, less grip compound (I use that on the rear brakes cos Red is a bit overkill). They do work well, lots of bite from cold and consistent performance, but my God they produce a load of dust! Don\'t use them if you can\'t face cleaning your wheels regularly, but on overall performance, very good. I\'ve used EBC discs before, too, and been rather less impressed (not on an RX-7, admittedly) found them very average.
Had Black Diamond on my previous FD, found them the other way round. The discs were very good, the pads less so. Pads very inconsistent and unpredictable in how much bite they offered. I\'d give the discs a thumbs-up as a good, not too expensive straight replacement for OE
thanks for the info nik :)
i was told by a few people that ebc have poor quality control and pads can often be poor aswell as good but not sure.
ive heard the same about black diamond too so i may go that route :)
does anyone know where to get Project Mu pads?
http://www.jdmperformance.co.uk/
Think they do them, used to be Funky Styling but changed their name. Dunno if they do RX ones, though
JM Garage on here sell Project Mu: http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40376
I had Mintex Xtremes on with some unknown brand drilled/grooved discs. I cracked the discs and melted the pads on track, either due to sticking pistons (unlikely as it was both sides) or the discs not being up to it.
I\'ve now got Hawk HT10 pads and MRP\'s Racing Brake discs on (with different calipers too as I think the old ones need a rebuild!), very impressed so far - they need a bit of heat to start with, but plenty of bite and stopping power after a couple of stops. Haven\'t had them on track yet but I will soon and fingers crossed they\'ll be up to it! :)
The equivalent Project Mu disc/pad combo was looking like £150 more (and had to be ordered in).

how much was your setup mate?
i would go down that route but my problem is that my abs has never worked so until i find out who or how im going to fix them i dont want to spend to much as money may need to be spent making them work :(

are these any good? seem to cheap for how they are described + no rear ones?
You\'re looking a touch over £450 with delivery, I forget how much discount members get (it\'s £479 without).

Fifty quid for a full set of pads!? Sounds too cheap...
i got what looks to be project mu running rz discs but they\'re slotted. Stopping power is very strong, work well from cold a bit dusty but not really bad.
I bought a set of Mintex Xtremes shortly after buying my car last year. To be honest I wasn\'t very impressed with them. I have now changed to Ferrodo DS3000\'s and the improvement is huge. I also have a master cylinder stopper fitted as well.
Rather than go the full hog and replace disks as well I would just replace the pads and see how you go.
mf.
my thoughts exactly.
just cant pick which ones :(

You really need to buy your brakes according to what your going to use the car for,
The pads I directed you to were for fast road, however if your only going on road and not track and road then Ian\'s ( lockwood77) would not be for you also DS3000 really is a race pad and not for road at all and if mutleysfriend (sorry don\'t know your name) was unimpressed with Xtreame when around 150 people were pleased then he does some "serious" braking which is why he can live with DS3000,
Hopefully this will help clarify things

Hi Sophie,
John must either be real gentle on brakes or Black Diamond have changed compounds.
According to Black Diamond we have sold more of their disc\'s for them to fit RX-7\'s than any company, however we have deliberately not sold their pads for some five years now after we witnessed a customer we knew suffer from severe brake fade and rapid wear in just one track day session

Here you go Ben, if your using standard Mazda callipers you need look no further than here

I agree entirely, I am using my RX-7 almost exclusively for the track and DS3000\'s are just the job in that environment.
I have DS2500\'s on my daily drive car (Nissan Skyline) and that is used all year round, sun, rain and snow. In my view the DS2500 are a better pad than the Mintex Xtremes that I had on the RX-7.
All this of course is very subjective, it\'s a bit like asking people what\'s the best tyres to use. Ask a 100 people and you\'ll probably get a 100 different opinions.
All the best,
mf.

I\'d go for DS2500, cant really fault them tbh. Hawk are ok. Performance Friction are great if you dont mind paying the premium and getting through disks quicker. Max has done I would imagine more laps at the ring in an FD than, well, I dunno who on DS2500s. I ate Mintex pads, swapped to PF and ate disks and now use DS2500s and Hawks (which I\'ve always found dust *a lot*, but hey...). Really a case of try them and find what feels good for you.
thank you for all the feedback peeps really appreciate it.
i always try to keep the car \'normal\' to an extent as in the past i have made a few mistake such as solid engine mounts which in alot of cases arent worth the sacrifice etc.
my car was used more on the street and shows etc etc but now its more taken out for harder driving and track so it needs to be a more focussed pad. im after minimal dust as my wheels are delicate and costly but also relatively long wearing and not too harmful to disks. it also seems this is achievable :)
i have all braided lines too and im getting some front vented discs to aid with it. Right it basically is looking like the DS2500 is what would be good for me but is there anywhere in particular that is good to get them from. (pm me if you wish.)
i would like to know how good the black diamonds are but my guess is that they are a bargain but a case of you get what you paid for and not much better than stockers.
hopefully a set of DS2500\'s vented fronts and getting my abs fixed :( should be enough to get it stopping properly :D
thanks again.
edit ive just seen what clive has said about the black diamonds and i see why they arent too popular for us track nuts.
Like I said, dude, Black Diamond discs are great, their pads are sh!te! Glad it\'s not just me thinking it, if Clive says so too, that\'s good enough for me!
yep, just remembering now what people told me last year about them. definately not good for my purpose.
well yeh we are using the new pads they just fetched out alot better now then before now thy using differnet compound been maybe speak with jon he nows alot more about them than me :)
Just that jon as good services with them we go direct as they sponser jon for events.

That sounds impartial!
Black Diamond disks, hawk pads :) job done
I\'ve decided to try some Hawk pads, i hope they turn up soon i\'m getting desperate!
Looks like i\'m gonna be trying the Black Diamond discs and hawk pads also so we\'ll see :)
Will be nice to not have juddering for a change lol
Would you recommend the grooved, drilled, or combo ?? Only use the car on road.
Hmm well all I know is that the more extreme the grooving and drilling, the less time the pads last cause its like a cheese grater lol I might go for some simple grooved disks when I get a new set for mine, they will be a lot better than stock, but also let the pads last a bit more :)
Mmmmm it\'s just i\'ve heard that drilled discs tend to crack easily.... Not sure if this depends on the disc tho tbh...
Drilled disks only crack if they weren\'t made correctly, if they are correctly forged with the holes in it, rather than simply drilling holes in a disk and not treating it they are fine, Black diamond disks seem to be a pretty good choice for RXs from what ive heard, just don\'t get their pads lol
Discs cast with holes in are very expensive as far as I know, so unless you\'re spending many hundreds on them, I\'d imagine they\'re drilled and my experience is they crack very easily on track if you\'re using decent pads!
