Title: Whats the first thing to go?
Post by: ScuttleRX on March 09, 2004, 07:15:06 PM
When up-ing the boost on a standard car whats the first components that will fail?

Ive heard that the stock cooler is good for about 0.9 bar, how much can stock twins handle if the cooler is uprated. And if twins are uprated what would be the next thing to do?

Cheers

Depends whats already been done. Here\'s a list of things to be done, sort of in order.

1, ECU
2, Fuel System (uprated pump/fuel pressure reg.)
3, Exhaust System (remove cats)
4, Front Mount Intercooler
5, Better Brakes
6, Single Turbo
7, Bucket Under Seat, wet wipes in glove box. ;)

lol@ no 7 :rollin

Just sort of curious as to what the weakest link would be if the boost was wound up, I know the general concensus is not to go more than 0.9 on a standard set up (except ecu and exhaust/dowpipe), wondered whether that was just because the turbos couldnt handle it or whether there were other things like the cooler which would also be at risk

And after each of the stages a DYNO tune should be done - well maybe not after 5. and 7  :)

Apex Seals - lean/detonation etc.

But good tuning can help prevent this.

The twins are out of their efficiency range much over 15psi. 16-18psi should see them dead pretty quick. They generate a lot of heat when making more than stock boost. The next thing to go I would guess will be your motor if its not pinned. Much more than a bar and flex/twisting under high boost will do lots of damage...

Haven\'t seen much about this, whats normally done to prevent it. Is it stronger engine mounts, or chassis strengthing something along these lines..?

Maybe No7 would still be needed cos you  might lead to number 2\'s when you get the dyno bill?

i would say stock twins are good for 15 psi
but i dont know if the stock cooler would be able to cope with this maybe a SMIC ?
