Title: New Bonnet! Should i fit Pins?
Post by: Lum on May 04, 2008, 05:44:11 PM
Just got my new Scoot Carbon Bonnet fitted:Giggle
It\'s a seibon one, the fit and the quality is top notch.
I\'m well happy with it & reckon it adds a bit of aggresion to the front end!

I\'m using the standard bonnet catch at the moment but am not sure whether i should fit some bonnet pins/catches or not?
I don\'t really want to as i think it spoils the look a bit, but obviously don\'t want the bonnet flying open at speed. It does currently lift a bit at the sides where it meets the wings but the original one used to do this aswell although not as much.
What have other people with the same bonnet done??

No they look stupid. Plus how is a hevier bonnet than the standard one more likely to fly open.

standard bonnet has a metal catch attatched by welds to a metal bonnet..ie strong
carbon fibre has a thin fibre glass skim holding metal catch factor in bonnet lift g force of 70mph speeds plus and easy to rip metal catch away from fibre glass bonnet
not sure on ur logic timmy but carbon bonnet is lighter and more likely to let go if stressed
metal bonnet is not going to break away from catch

Unless it is dry carbon it will be heavier. The stock bonnet is aluminium about 1-2kgs lighter than a wet carbon bonnet. So all we are really worrying about is the bond on the catch.

Thats the only thing that you should ever worry about with regard to bonnet lift.  The difference in weight between dry/wet carbon and metal will make absolutely no difference at x miles per hour.

For the cost of bonnet pins it well worth the investment, plus some of the flush ones look ok.  Check out these:

I ran my old bonnet for ages without pins and at about 110 it was a good few inches off the front wings... it never flipped up but then that\'s not to say it couldn\'t have done at any moment.

My new bonnet is the same as yours and the body shop forgot to fit the aero catches when they painted it.  I think I will fit them for peace of mind.

It does look like theres about 5 tonnes of fibreglass holding the catch in but then... who knows.

PS - car looks really smart :)

Cheers for the advice guys. Really didn\'t want to fit pins as they kinda ruin the look i think.  Probably gonna go for the Aerocatch flush ones that mount from underneath, then try covering the visable bits with some carbon fibre sheeting.
Atomic rex- Do you know if merlin motorsport are open tomorrow?

surely you need to take the front vent into consideration :Thumbsup!

I thought that, but then realised there are great big slots just behind so dont think you\'d get too much air pressure from that

im pretty sure you would still get large force pushing the bonnet upwards, as not all fo the air will be leaving through the rear vents
