Title: Do big amps cause any electrical gremlins?
Post by: SupraZed on May 01, 2008, 07:31:21 PM
Just wanted to know if there was likely to be any electrical issues caused by having amps and subs set up in the FD.

For example, a 4ch amp (4x50W at 4 ohms) for the main speakers which will all be upgraded and an active sub of about 150 watts (nothing too crazy).

Would the standard altrnator and a normal size battery be able cope with this setup without other accessories suffering, i.e. clocks dimmimg  etc.

Cheers.

Cheers mate, how would I test to see if alt is good?
I\'ve never used a power cap, whereabouts would they be connected up in the system, between battery and amp?

Thanks again.

check voltage at alternator using tester on the big nut that connects the alt for reading when running..for power cap
run power from battery to power splitter then run power from fused splitter to power cap and then from power cap to subwoofer amplifier..run earth from power cap to suitable earth point..job done..no need for power cap on the other amp..any probs give me a call 07872931643..paul

Make sure that you slow charge it up when you install one too with a ceramic resistor. You could damage your battery otherwise.

The cap is only a stop gap for temporary low hits.

I used to run a 4x100 and a 1x600w RMS amps in a AXGT with only a puny 75amp alternator. Never really had any problems.

Just make sure the negative end of the battery is beefed up to match the positive side and use the stereo heavily only with the engine on and the alt charging.

Your more likely burning the coil in the sub than damaging electronics in the car. Lack of power to the amp causes clipping of the output that can burn out a coil. Never covered in a subs warranty.
