Title: Need help finding an FD!
Post by: Rotary_Menace on May 01, 2008, 02:02:25 PM
Hey peeps after a yaer of battleing through exams and gaining working experince im starting a job which will allow me to finally quench my FD lust. But thier seems to be a problem.

Insurance :Grrr

Here is the car i would love to own

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/MAZDA+RX7/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146,N-4294967255-4294967256/advert.action?R=200817308384132&distance=84&postcode=le7+3ft&channel=CARS&make=MAZDA&model=RX7&min_pr=&max_pr=&max_mileage= (http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/MAZDA+RX7/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146,N-4294967255-4294967256/advert.action?R=200817308384132&distance=84&postcode=le7+3ft&channel=CARS&make=MAZDA&model=RX7&min_pr=&max_pr=&max_mileage=)

I have been battling insurers all morning.

22
No convictions etc
2 NCB
1 documented year of not crashing a company car.
social use only.

All the insurace quotes (if they could give me any) have been around the £2700 mark :2Confused

i have tried all the usuals
A-plan my biggest hope -NO!
adrian flux
bell
... etc

after searching hard and ringing friends i have come across //www.ecarinsurance.co.uk

So heres the point... i will be able to get an FD but it has to meet some requirements

Do i have a hope? Does anyone know of any? i know i may be in the wrong section but i could really use some help with this. I have wanted an FD since i was 15. Insurers recommended i go for a silvia or something and work my way up but anything else will just seem unfulfilling to drive!

Cheers Neil

It\'s a powerful RWD car, you\'re a young and inexperienced driver. Why are you complaining?

If you go from a normal day to day car to a FD they see you as not having any performance car experiance or RWD experiance, hence I can see why they want you to start off with a Nissan SX. Buy a SX for 1k run it for a year then go for an FD it will work out cheaper that way plus you get experiance of rwd

Reckon you\'d be lucky to find a decent UK model for any money, dude. They only sold about 120 of them in this country officially, and most apparently have horrible rust by now. Red is by far the nicest colour, i think you\'ll find though!

Price you have to pay im afraid.  If it\'s any concellation the majority of us have been through it.  I remember having to pay £3400 when I was 18 for my MR-2 turbo.  It only seems like I was 18 two minutes ago...... Then you wake up and it\'s 15 years later. :(

This is what really fricks me off about insurance companies.  Import is just another poor excuse for whacking up the premium.

have you got quotes for a stock car?

my insurance was £800 more purely because i had an air filter.

getting an sx sounds like a good idea, or what about an fc?

23 with 3 year ncb with Noel Dezley £900 with £300 excess.  Uk cars are far and few between open yourself up for an import and you get a lot more options also i think some insurance companys would be hard pressed to belive you that it is a real UK car. :Talking1

on a side note wernt there only like 127 of the uk spec made?:eek

I have been really looking at them and it really seems to good to be true im getting quotes out at 13,000.

1 question i am putting the reg plates in, nad everything is going fine, but they dont ask if its an import or anything?

This may be obvious to you but have you tried the following for your insurance:
I use elephant extensively to compare the effects of the above on my insurance.

Quote from: Philo;495700This may be obvious to you but have you tried the following for your insurance:
  • Elephant
  • Putting someone old and responsible on as a named driver
  • Getting a quote for a 93 rx to see if it is cheaper (I know earlier soarers are cheaper to insure than later ones)
  • Haggleing
  • Reducing your mileage
  • Increasing your security
  • Increasing your excess
  • Declaring your mods (I notice the car you like has gauges, BOV etc and that could be adding hundreds to your premium)
I use elephant extensively to compare the effects of the above on my insurance.

Already got 2 very good quotes, one with a good rep fro what i can gather, my concern now is where to take the car to get checked over?

Good sounds like a new car is on its way to you :D And you got down to £1600 with all those mods declared?

Alloy wheels plus “LOADS OF EXTRA ETC GREEDY TURBO AND OIL TEMP GAUGES. AIR FILTERS AND GREEDY DUMP VALVE. MANY MORE BONUSES CALL FOR DETAILS.”

My little brother pays about that for his standard small engine Peugeot 206 :rollin

I can see yours in the photos in your sig, chap, and very nice it is too, but since it obviously ain\'t for sale, it\'s no use to the original question set by Rotary Menace, yeah? I wasn\'t trying to disrespect the quality of UK cars, just the availabilty of them :Thumbs-up!

Rotary Menace, well done on your, er, affordable quote, but don\'t get complacent that just cos you think the mods won\'t matter, the insurers won\'t care either. They will. If you wrap the car up and their assessor sees anything non-standard you haven\'t declared to them, they\'ll use that as an excuse to not pay out. That may in the worst case mean you\'re considered to be uninsured, and liable personally for any costs that an accident you\'ve had (God forbid) has caused, up to and including death and carnage! Prison and bankrupcy will follow!

Ok, that\'s a bit of a gloomy picture, but it really ain\'t worth the risk of not declaring mods to your insurers. Seriously

I know Nik :D just a statement that was all and yeah i know they usually go bad...

Anyway, glad you\'ve managed to find a "reasonable" quote mate, and the car in the link looks very very nice, so if you have the funds and opportunity i would go and see it, and i agree with Nik, declare everything as Insurers often look for ways out anyhow of paying something so you want to make sure you\'re covered, not just for your own sake but for the third party also.

Just a suggestion, but it might be worth talking to someone on here from the area it\'s in and maybe they can pop down with you if you want to look at it and give their opinion based on their rotary experience??/ Just a thought..... :)

I was speaking to a friend who works for an insurance company. Now dont take this as gospel cos shes not the sharpest tool in the box...but shes not thick as 2 planks either. She told me that even if the policy is voided as long as the premium has been paid/monthly payments kept up, that the insurers still have to pay out the 3rd party liability..

Now i dont know how true that is...anyone care to shed some light?

How depressing! There was no such thing as an MR2 Turbo when I was 18! I had a mark 1 Golf that was like a badly-tied bag of sh!t, never really ran for long enough for it to need insurance, the only way it could\'ve caused an accident was if it caught fire whilst someone was walking past...

Lol...  It was a few years old at the time, 1993. It was an early 1989 G-reg revision one in black....  Not a patch on the FC it replaced, but as a daily driver it was slightly more reliable. ;)
