Title: **TRACKDAY** Brands Hatch Indy, 24 June
Post by: Casey on April 30, 2008, 07:24:01 PM
OK, it\'s getting to the time of the year when I\'m needing to book a trackday "fix" :cool

I’m inviting all RX8-OC and MRC members to come along to a Brands Hatch open pitlane trackday (well, morning actually). The basic cost is £129 for 3 hours tracktime on the “Indy” circuit. This is a public session with up to 40 cars. It would be great to have a sizeable contingent of rotary cars to come along to exchange views, share rides, etc.

http://www.motorsportvision.co.uk/trackdays/event-details.asp?ProductID=4191 (http://www.motorsportvision.co.uk/trackdays/event-details.asp?ProductID=4191)

For those of you who have never done a trackday this is your chance to really see what our great vehicles can do when there are no speed cameras to worry about.

The Brands “Indy” circuit is short, but with lots of gradients, challenging bends (Paddock Hill is a classic) and two short straights. These events are well organised and marshalled. Follow in the tyre tracks of the first BTCC event held on the same circuit a few weeks ago!

If you are interested, then please checkout the MSV website from the link above, including the “T&C”. PM me, or post here if you have any questions. Note the noise limit for the day is 105dB(A). This is a static noise test, measured from a position 0.5m behind the exhaust at a 45 degree angle, with the engine running at ¾ maximum revs.

At this stage I suggest you DO NOT book direct, as we may (stress may) get some form of incentive if I block book on behalf of us all.

Clive has kindly confirmed that any MRC member will receive a £20 contribution to the cost of the event.

Interested? add your name to the list;

Why thank you!
I was due a Brands session but have not made the effort to actually make a booking, so thanks for the push...
Oh, also thanks to Clive for the added bonus of Petrol money... :Thumbsup!

I also know another member here that would be up for this, hopefully with enough numbers, MSV can also contribute to the fuel bill.. :D

Glad to have you on board TRex:Thumbs-up

Rob, Indy circuit because it\'s cheaper, plus there are very few BH days running the full GP circuit - only one posted is 2nd June (at £399:eek:).

Morning; well, evening has a lower noise limit and shorter time, so had to be morning/afternoon or all day. Looking at the MSV calendar there wasn\'t a lot of choice! During June, there is only the session I\'ve chosen. In July, only one full day on the 3rd.

I understand if you\'ve got a long way to come to BH that it\'s difficult. If you can\'t make it, I hope to see you at another trackday sometime :cheers

^^^^^ Yeah, the noise limit at most circuits in the evening is a LOT stricter. There\'s a huge difference between 105Db(A) and 98Db(A), hence my opting for a "day(morning)" session to give the RX-7\'s a fair chance. No problem with my RX-8, I\'d have trouble getting to 85Db(A), even with my aftermarket exhaust.

Excellent, I\'l wait over the weekend to see who else is interested, then contact MSV about any "offers".

If they will give a similar offer i.e. less £30 for the group + £20 MRC membership discount - then that will be really good value. The £50 discount will then be used in petrol:3gears-rh

^^^ Shouldn\'t be a problem, but wait a day or so. The more people there that we "know" on the day, the better! I\'ll talk to MSV tomorrow and see how the "numbers" are going and see if they can offer any discounts/incentives for a group booking. Watch this space......

Anyone else with a rotary want to add their name, before we open the offer up to others?
Title: Update
Post by: Casey on May 08, 2008, 12:39:05 PM
UPDATE: I\'ve spoken to MSV this morning and they aren\'t able to offer any discounts on the trackday cost itself (they only discount for groups on FULL days :( ) BUT;

1. They will reserve a sufficient garages together for us to use as a group. For those of you who\'ve not been to BH before, the "grabbing of a garage" is just like the rush to bag seats together on Ryanair flights - not a pretty sight.  It will make socialising between driving stints a lot easier than walking the length of the pitlane.
2. They are willing to consider free/discounted; helmets, extra passengers drivers fees, depending on our requirements.
3. Possible discounted intruction sessions, depending on our requirements

OK, in order to see what can be negotiated, I need everyone\'s requirements asap. Can you please "follow my lead" and add to the list - thx

For those of you with "dual citizenship" :cool of both the MRC and the RX8OC, just stick your requirements on one forum.

The list;
Casey - yes instruction, no helmet, no xrta passengers, no xtra drivers
Harrizone
HypoThermia
injury_ian
TRex
Compressor
Lesmon
RedRummy
birdy (maybe)
countzero (maybe)
Crissy (maybe)

NON-ROTARY CARS - The numbers of spaces available on the day, and the number of rotary takers so far is such that, if you have friends who would like to join the group (and help us all with possible discounts) then PLEASE ADD THEM TO THE LIST NOW (plse add their car details), together with their requirements.

Any questions :)?

Some people have enquired about trackday insurance. I\'ve asked for a quote from Competition Car Insurance  (http://www.competition-car-insurance.co.uk/)(who offer a discount to those on MSV organised trackdays) and I shall probably get a quote from www.moris.co.uk  (http://www.moris.co.uk). I\'m not convinced I\'ll take insurance at this stage, but if it\'s cheap enough I might be tempted.

Once I get the quote(s) I\'ll post some details here, so you can make up your own minds as to whether to get insurance cover.

@RedRummy
Really, you should go!

Getting the intuition (for free!) is what you need :D I went last year, and it was my first track day, nothing to worry about -- go at your own pace. Have short sessions (10-15 laps/mins) at a time, and rest the same in between, think about the next session, and any improvements you can make. :yes :Thumbs-up

You\'re not racing anybody, and you\'ve nothing to proove to anybody other than yourself how well you can learn to take your car smoothly and progressively around the track. :D

You won\'t regret it! I did my first track day at brands indy last year, and quickly followed it up with another session! I would be attending this one too, but will be away on holiday!

Are they gonna let us know when the spaces are getting low ......... in my experience no track day is booked until you part with the spondoolies.

I may have misunderstood the thread but I thought the only discount was from MRC.

Re-reading it seems that there \'may\' be further discount from MSV for a group booking on top of the £20 from MRC.

I think I\'ll book this sooner rather than later though to avoid dissapointment.

UPDATE

This is looking GREAT, we\'ve got a good sized group of us going along which will make it more fun!

I\'ve been away for a while, but I\'ll be talking to MSV tomorrow (Thursday) to see what they can offer in the way of any extra incentives. I\'ll post back here when I\'ve got more info.

Places are not an issue at the moment.

James B, are you after any instruction, helmet hire, extra drivers/passengers? I think this is the area where we might get some "incentives/discounts". If you let me know the name you booked under, I\'ll see you get added to the group. MSV have offerred us a set of "reserved garages" together, so at least we can be close to chat between track stints. Those of you who\'ve been before will know it\'s a mad scramble to "bag" a garage at BH! It\'s also a long way down the pitlane, so if we get separated at both ends, we won\'t see much of each other during the session!!

I\'ll post up tomorrow, after I\'ve spoken to MSV :cheers

^^^^ James, thx for PM and details.

I\'ve spoken to Nick at MSV and he\'s reserved places for EVERYONE on the list at present (15 places of the available 40, including a Monaro which is tagging along), so don\'t worry about that aspect. He\'s included everyone in the "group booking", including James B and IainT.

He\'s also reserving a group of garages together to accommodate us all, as near as possible to the briefing area.

Now Nick has got our list of requirements he is going to see what he can offer in terms of discounts/freebies on any extras.

More details to follow. Payment not normally required until 2-3 weeks before, unless there is a surge of interest.

As there are places still available, and I guess there\'s unlikely to be too many additional MRC/RX8OC people joining up at this time, please feel free to invite any friends along to join in - just add their names to the list, togther with any additional needs.

I\'ll post up some more details as soon as Nick gets back to me :)

Ian, great idea. I don\'t frequent the FDUK forum (too many forums to keep up with already :Giggle). But please feel free to point FDUK people to this thread, or copy details over there.

As the event has been advertised on the MRC and RX8OC for some time now, I\'m happy to open it up to FDUK or friends of people on the list. There are a total of 40 places available, and only 6 taken "outside" our group of around 15, leaving 19 places "up for grabs". The more we can fill the gap with rotaries, or friends of rotary owners, the better IMO.

LATEST.......LATEST........LATEST........DISCOUNTS

OK, if we can maintain a group of 10 or more (we\'re lookin\' good for that:Thumbs-up) MSV have agreed to offer 10% off the price of the trackday, so that would mean £129 discounted to £116.10, less the £20 contribution to full MRC members means the cost will be £96.10.

ADDITIONALLY, they\'ve offered a 10% discount off any extras (helmet hire, extra passengers, extra drivers).

HOWEVER, in order to qualify for these discounts it is VITAL YOU DO NOT BOOK DIRECT VIA THE WEBSITE!!.
Regretably, MSV cannot offer discounts to anyone who has already paid via the website.

Further details on how to pay will be provided later.

OK the list as it stands to date;

Casey - yes instruction, no helmet, no xrta passengers, no xtra drivers

Just had a thought... since my brother will be driving too, does that mean I need 2x helmet and 2x instruction?

Blimey, it\'s using difficult getting people to stump up the cash, and you\'re eager to pay:Giggle

Don\'t panic, the last couple of times I\'ve arranged these events with MSV they normally want payment form 10-20 days before, so we\'re getting closer!

I\'ll post details as soon as MSV request payment. If I haven\'t heard from them by the end of this week I\'ll chase them.

Helmet - only one needed if it fits you both.

Instruction - that\'s totally optional for both of you. It\'ll be difficult to "share" one instrcutor session. If you are both trackday novices, then I\'d say both invest in a session each, they\'re well worth it. Some instructors are better than others, so there is some variability in that aspect, but all will help you to get more out of the day.

Definately need two helmets and, as the instructor can only instruct one at a time, two lessons as well.

:PartyOK FOLKS, TIME TO PAY:Party

Before you proceed further, please ensure you have read the Motorsportvision “Terms and conditions” http://www.motorsportvision.co.uk/trackdays/trackdayterms.asp (http://www.motorsportvision.co.uk/trackdays/trackdayterms.asp) and check you are happy before proceeding.

You then need to phone MSV on 01474 875218 and ask to speak to “Nick”. If he’s not available, ask for Alex or Jason.

They will need;

Details of the event you are booing (BH 24 June, morning session)
State you are booking as one of the “Rotary and Friends” group to qualify for our 10% discount (as long as we get 10 or more)
Your full name
Postal address
Contact phone number
Email address
Make and model of car you intend to track (reg’n not needed)
Names of additional passengers and/or drivers
Your Credit or Debit card number for payment

If you want the 10% discount on the extras they MUST be booked at the same time as your trackday booking. You can opt to add them later, or on the day itself, but you will lose the 10% discount.

Cost of extras, before discount, are;

Additional Driver £25
Additional Passenger £10
Instruction session ~20 minutes £25
Helmet hire £10

YOUR CREDIT/DEBIT CARD WILL NOT BE CHARGED until 10 people have booked under the group booking arrangement. Once 10 people have booked, the discount will be applied and your card charged. IF WE FAIL TO GET 10 PEOPLE WE WILL NOT GET THE DISCOUNT APPLIED.

DO NOT BOOK VIA THE MSV WEBSITE

If I’ve missed anything, or still any queries, PM or post here.

To anyone interested in trackday insurance - I\'ve requested a quote from one company, and will seek a couple more. As soon as I get responses I\'ll post here. No sure whether I\'ll take it myself or not at this stage, depends on cost. No rush, most of these companies can provide cover next day if desperate.

OK, hit the phones……:)

:)Hi Maz13b, glad you can join us.

Not being a biker I\'m not sure what "twin circle" protection is. However, my experience of these days is that as long as your helmet is not damaged, and meets ANY of the EU/BS or other helmet standards, you shouldn\'t have a problem. Worst case scenario would be to have to pay £10 on the day to hire one, but I reckon you\'d be OK. I use a modern full face biker\'s helmet (even though I\'ve never ridden a bike in my life :o).

Post your friend\'s details on the list if he decides to tag along. Spaces at the moment are not a problem.

If the same process applies as in previous years, you\'ll need to PM Lisa to claim your £20 AFTER the event. Usually Lisa will send a cheque in the post.

I checked with Alex at MSV this morning. He says there are JUST enough places at the moment for everyone, but demand from outside our group is now at a level that our reserved spaces will be lost if not paid for.

Welcome to the "team" Maz, look forward to seeing you at BH.

The bad news is, as explained very carefully in this thread, if you book via the website you will not recieve a discount from MSV, you needed to phone MSV direct to make the booking. Not my rules I\'m afraid, it was made clear by MSV that bookings had to be made vai the phone to qualify.

You\'ll have to console yourself with the £20 that the MRC have generously offered towards the cost (see futher up this thread fro details).

EVENT NOW FULL - AND ONE WEEK TO GO!

OK, MSV have now confirmed this event is FULL, and we have taken 15 of the 40 available spaces - should be a really good day!

MSV have agreed to reserve a group of garages together for us. I\'m hoping to get details of the garage numbers before the day so we know where to go after the briefing.

Confirmation of the "final fifteen" as I know them. Not sure if two of you missed out on the 10% discount (web booking), but at least 13 people would have got 10% off.

ONE MORE?

OK, I\'ve just been trying to correlate the names I have with those that MSV have on file.

Having trouble as they have EIGHTEEN names and I only have SEVENTEEN:3Confused. Maybe one of those is an extra driver, not bringing a car?

Names I can\'t match are;

Duncan McBain
Artem Tserenia

One of those has to be Maz13B? Who\'s the other one?

No problem at all, but it\'d be nice to know I have a full list.............

Casey (Malcolm)

ALSO GARAGING..............

We have EIGHT garages (Numbers 4 thro 11) reserved for us. These are the closest ones available to the pit exit, briefing room and snack bar. Those of you who are familair with BH and want to get to a garage early can head for any of these. The garages can easily accomodate 2 cars, so we might have a couple with 3 cars.

So, any of you who want to "double-up" or "triple up" with friend(s) can sort yourselves out beforehand and head for any of the garages in our group. Other than that, we\'ll sort it out on the day. Maybe a chance to share with a rotary stranger :)

Don\'t recognise the names... you weren\'t expecting the names of passengers and extra drivers were you? The guy at MSV didn\'t ask.

As for on the day... what do we do... I\'m a trackday n00b. Presumably before we get near the pits we\'re gonna have to have safety briefings etc...?

Usually have a drivers briefing at the beginning of the day before they let you loose on the track :)

Don\'t worry, you won\'t be a "noob" anymore this time next week (and I\'ll wager you\'ll want to go again!).

These events are well organised - just don\'t be late for the start!

Timetable

 07:30  Signing on
 08:30  Safety briefing
 09:00  Open lane begins
 12:00  Track time ends

When you get to the main circuit entrance (off the main road by hotel), proceed through the circuit barriers. Someone might ask you why you are there, just say "trackday". Proceed on that road until you see the main grandstand to your left (you can\'t miss it, shops underneath). At the end of the Grandstand, to your left you will see the Octagon Restaurant, where the briefing normally takes place. Suggest we all gather in the car park near there - just look for other georgeous cars that look just like yours (unless you\'re first:))

The first hour involves signing to say you realise that driving a car at over 100mph can be dangerous and it\'s not the organiser\'s fault if you do something silly ;).

Seriously, you\'ll be told to get your car noise checked and a sticker will go on your windscreen to confirm you\'ve passed. The safety briefing is very thorough and will tell you about track "etiquette" for the event. Before the track opens there is normally a "follow me" session behind an instructor to show you the track and the "accepted" cornering lines. All the "recommended" braking points and corner apexes are marked with coloured cones and these will be explained during the briefing.

For the "noobs", with aplogies to the "vets"; some "pearls of wisdom" from previous trackdayers (not my own work!)

Make sure you have plenty of petrol when you arrive - there is a Texaco garage 0.5 mile from the circuit on the main road. You don\'t want to be going out to fill up halfway through the morning session! Expect 10-15mpg whilst ontrack. Remember RX-8 fuel pickup can get tricky on long right-handers like "Clearways/Clark Curve" on less than a quarter tank! A lap is 1.2miles.

Take it easy until tyres are warmed up and until you are familiar with the circuit.

Do not be tempted to do too many consecutive laps. It\'s about a minute a lap on the indy circuit, you\'ll find 10-15 laps is probably about right. By then your tyres, brakes and engine will need cooling down. Beware you may experience brake fade if you stay out too long, and your road tyres will literally start to melt.

It\'s suggested you do a "cooling down lap" before coming back into the pits (light braking, easy cornering, get some air across the brakes).

Come in and let everything cool down  - do NOT apply hand brake (use reverse gear if parking on the downward sloping pit lane, or park on the level in  agarage), open bonnet. RX-8\'ers may wish to remove the plastic engine cover for the event (leave it in the garage).

Check oil before, during and after the event.

Make sure tyre pressures are correct. Most people recommend  2-4 psi extra for the track, to stiffen up the sidewalls.

(RX-8\'s) Do not switch off DSC unless you are supremely confident.

Do not have anything loose laying around in the passenger compartment or boot. Use the garage to store any stuff.

Above all enjoy yourself and lets all have a good natter whilst the cars are cooling down.

After the event finishes we may wish to grab a bite at the "Octagon" reaturant (usaually the signing on anf briefing takes place here).[/COLOR]

Pretty confident my FD will pass the noise test, do you only need to worry if you have a known \'loud\' exhaust (Nur Spec etc) or is it quite strict?

How loud is 105db (or whatever it is?)

used to live about 5 miles from brands Hatch, and you could hear the BTCC cars roaring round, and some of the older historic cars they used to do...

Just one small point on the tyre pressures.

If you\'re doing short sessions then this is good advice but if you are doing longer sessions (5 laps and over), I would take 3-5 psi out of the tyres as the added heat that is generated increases the psi.  I\'ll be running Toyo 888\'s on 18\'s with 25 psi. (if you do this however just make sure you have a warm up lap to get the heat into them).

I tend to agree with Sicknote - I am using F1s (yes...Goodyear, Dave!!!)  on 18s with 26-27 psi cold pressure.

I\'ve noticed quite a big increase in understeer after a few laps of Silverstone on F1s.

It\'s actually a good idea to do a few laps, pop back into the pits and re-check pressures, let a little out if needed.  Rears tend to be fine but the fronts will push on after a while.

Whats the likelyhood of blowing a whole tank of V-Power?

Looking online the nearest Shell garage is 5km away...
Title: **TRACKDAY** Brands Hatch Indy, 24 June

Easily ........... and you will especially need to fill up if you have fuel starvation issues under half a tank like me.

The run to the shell station is not too bad ............ will they have any fuel though ?

There is a Texaco station nearby and I found their higher octane fuel pretty good.

I shall be down there the tonight and will check out the Shell station.

Not very likely in a half-day event.  Last time we were there I managed ~70 miles on track and had no major issues BUT I would reccomend starting with ~3/4 of a tank in there.

great advice just a couple of silly ones from me,
do you have to have acsess to a towing eye (one or both?)
do you need a skid lid for all track days? (not a problem i have one but its good to know the rules)

There is no mention of towing eyes on the webiste T&Cs... however, if you go off and need to be \'recovered\' they\'ll prolly just wrap something round the chassis and yank it out...  wrecking the bumper(s)!!!

not sure if there are any gravel traps?

Towing eyes - good question!!

For RX-8 owners - you WILL be required to fit your FRONT towing eye in position before you go out on track (the marshalls will look the first time you try to exit the pit lane). For those of you who\'ve never fitted it, dead simple; there should (!) be two eyes in the boot. Snap out the "captive" plastic cover, top right of your "smile" grille at the front. Screw in eye and tighten usising standard wheelnut spanner. Job done in a few minutes. They\'ve never bothered to "request" fitting the one at the rear.

Not sure what the towing eye situation is with the 7\'s?

Helmets - compulsory at all trackdays I know. Not required for events such as the "North Weald" activity days with Andy Walsh of Car Limits.

Fuel. Good advice above. You\'ll be lucky if you get to 90 miles distance in a 3 hour session (70 more likely). At say 9mpg, that\'s potentially 8-10 gallons, so the fuller the tank at the start the batter, especially as the 8\'s (and 7\'s?)suffer from fuel starvation on less than a quarter tank on long right-hand bends! We\'ve experienced that problem MANY times at various circuits with long right handers!!

OK, less than 24 hours to go :mmmm:mmmm
Title: **TRACKDAY** Brands Hatch Indy, 24 June

Towing eye or a safe decent point for towing/pulling you is needed, but not mandatory!

A couple years back with one of my FD\'s at Brands while cueing to get onto the track, the guys at the holding point to the track normally gives your car a quick once over and he noticed my car had absoutly no safe means of attachment for me to get pulled out of traps without wrecking my bumpers etc.
He give me a stern warning and said it will be at my own risk if I need recovering, to which I agreed and made certain to stay on the track for my own good... :bandit

So you should be fine, just stay on the track.... :chat
