Title: The next step
Post by: Domwhite on April 30, 2008, 03:51:28 PM
Im wondering where to go next. I have a 93 RZ running stock twins. I have HKS air filyers, Hyper Muffler exhaust, Apexi Power FC.

Im thinking it will probably be an uprated intercooler, but just wondering if I am missing anything

do the intercooler and the decat at the same time, then you will need to remap

If you add the intercooler you may be at the limit of the stock fuel system and will need uprated injectors etc.

Not quite there yet mate.

I may have just scored an intercooler. I haven`t put the ecu on yet so will need to get it mapped anyway.

What do you think next fuel pump or decat? Im going to try her out at rotorstock:burnout

I\'d get that ECU in before you do anything (the stock map is fine for your basic bolt-ons) else. I\'d also look into addressing your basic reliability mods (Radiator, AST, Silicone Vacuum hoses, coolant hoses, etc). Make sure everything that could break (and has shown weakness in the past) is replaced before you go adding more power to the equation..

I wouldn\'t go decat until you know you can control your boost levels, and provide adequate fuel. It\'s the last thing I would, personally, do..

(by decat I assume you are talking about your midpipe, not downpipe)

Don\'t forget if you are going for more power to make sure that the cooling system is uprated!

Ok so next step is radiator, ast, fuel pump and silicone hoses?

That\'s the route I would go.. Make sure she\'s not going to break or overheat before you try to add power. Also you might want to think about replacing the Coolant hose which runs from the block (right next to the firewall) up to your Throttle Body while you have the UIM off for the silicone vacuum hose install. That bugger is IMPOSSIBLE to reach when everything is in there, and a fairly common one to go...

I had mine blow out on me while I was coming on to a dual carriage way this winter. Luckily there was a layby about a mile up the road and I had a friend with a flatbed tow truck.. Would have pulled the tranny to get at the hose for replacement if my girlfriend at the time hadn\'t of been in the shop with me and willing to get her (much skinnier) arm in there to help with the replacement (Birds that will work on your car with you RULE!)

If im buying the 3 kits (turbo, coolant & radiator) will that be included?

Fairplay with your missus helping you out, I accelerated a little rapidly with mine in the car and she cried bless her:rolleyes:

Umm... probably not going to be included. The Radiator should just be the upper and lower hoses (ensure your clamps are good! I kept leaking coolant cause one was bollocked) You should be able to find the correct hosing (get the Upper and Lower Silicone Radiator hoses from a Rotary Specialist) for the block --> TB line at any garage that has hose (I got mine from one for free just by stopping in and asking them, you can pay extra for the pre-shaped type from a Mazda Dealership, but any will do). You can ref the size you will need very easily: if you are looking at the top of your engine it is the hose that is on the same side as the firewall and actually attached to the Throttle Body (Between the Intake Elbow and Upper Intake Manifold), it will look like it runs parallel to the TB/UIM for about 3 inches before making a 90 degree turn straight down. It *can* be completely bypassed if you really want to: Essentially it is there as a means to assist in warming up the TB sooner in cold climates (As I type this I\'m on Codeine and Old Speckled Hen, due to an operation earlier today and the upcoming bank Holiday). I could be wrong as to the exact function of the Block --> TB coolant line, but I\'m pretty sure that\'s close.

I\'d see if you can\'t get a couple feet of that diameter hose though, since alot of the misc coolant lines are that size (I had another one go on me that is all of 5 inches long and located directly below the piping from the Y-pipe to the IC, where the mount for the pressure chamber is) and it could always come in handy to have a little bit extra laying around. Just in case..

What Turbo kit are you referring to? Do you mean the Silicone Vacuum hoses?

One thing I would also keep in mind... If you do modifications one at a time (with a couple weeks between each) it will make it MUCH easier to locate and isolate any possible problems which, may, arise. If you are doing all the work yourself I would advise against throwing several different upgrades on at one time, since this will make it MUCH harder to determine exactly which change caused a problem. Basically take it slowly until you have a very good understanding of what your FD is saying to you.

Yeah... the Missus at that time was well nice (and quite fit!) I was pretty disappointed when one day she, randomly, told me she wasn\'t interested in a relationship anymore... Oh well... I guess these things happen (just means I have more money to spend on the FD now!! lol)
