Title: do rx8\'s suffer flooding ?
Post by: rx jamie on April 24, 2008, 01:49:07 AM
my missus (emma) has told me a ladie who lives round the corner from us has an rx8. she takes her kid by car to the same nursery as our kid which is litteral a five minute walk or 30 second drive away from our houses :Hammer
emma  has told me that every other day this rx8 owners car after it is switched off outside the nursery, wont fire and cranks over really slow like it has a flat battery then stops turning.
The woman was overheard today saying that she is sick of having her car towed to the mazda garage to have the car fixed. think shes getting sick. i dont want to see her sell it!
because the car isnt getting warmed up emma said should she tell her its flooding because she\'s not letting it warm up ? i said i\'ll ask on here as id imagine mazda may have sorted the flooding problem on the rx8. even if they havent im sure the garage would have advised to let her warm it up before switching off :Thumbs-up
any thought guys?

This is a problem with RX8, but I thought that a software flash of the ECU had fixed this problem. I hope Mazda have ensured the latest version is on that car.

Without having to wait for the car to warm up, show could try these 2 tricks.

1) when switching off - gently hold the revs at 2 or 3 k, now as you turn the key off, floor the pedal.

2) When starting - start it with the pedal fully depressed for about 2 seconds, then let the pedal go.

I dont know much about RX-8 plugs, do they come in some special form? Perhaps we can recommend hotter plugs?

Just ordered 7s all round for my FD, as I am only tootling around town, and mine has flooded a few times.

RX-8s will flood if you turn them off when they are not warned up. You either need to have the needle up to the second tempertature marker or rev to 4k and then turn off immediately.

I never turn mine off unill it\'s been running for 10mins or so. I know it\'s a bit of a pain but that\'s the pay off for owning a rotary. TBH it\'s not really designed for doing nursery / school runs and if it\'s only a 5 min walk then what the hell is she doing driving?

I\'d also make sure she\'s checking her oil if she\'s not aware of the \'special\' needs of a rotary.

No car is meant to run for only 30 seconds each and every day. It\'s gonna cause hell to the internals. The oil won\'t heat up probably, and won\'t be able to lubricate the engine sufficiently. Not to mention the costs involved!!

Talk about lazy. 5 minute walk!! Blinkin\' eck!!

They do flood, luckily mine has only done it once. I knew I had done it as I literally turned the car on, moved 20 feet, and turned off again. At the time I knew I shouldn\'t do it (I have a FD and the RX8), but for some reason, I just automatically switched off.

Interestingly, because I was out and about with no tools, I called in the AA, and the guy said he\'d done a few. He proceeded to lift the Fuel relay, crank it over, replace it, crank it over, remove it again, etc. Did this about 5 times, and it started up fine.

There is a procedure you can follow if you have flooded it but all RX-8\'s under warrenty are covered by Mazda Assist who are really good.

I also have done it one - moved the Rex off the road into my boyfriends car port before going on holiday for a week. :Hammer

I knew straight away when I tried to start it. Mazda Assist had it going in about 10 mins and then I got the dealer to check it over - all OK.

Yep they flood alright had my wifes flooded twice in one year once at a body shop when it was in for some work and the other on the drive switching the cars around and I did the shut down method as stated by the local dealer rev to 4k and hold for 10 sec switch off and then WOT!!. So we let it warm up now or take it for a spin.
