Those of you reading my wideband thread will have seen I was going to take it to a rolling road place to be looked at.
Well I didnt get there. I let it warm up, and thought id just watch what the boost gauge does whilst accelerating through thrid. It went up a bit higher than normal, and then just dropped back down to a little below its normal level. It kind of did this a couple of times.
Then letting off to slow down for a roundabout the engine just seemed to go all limp, so I bought it back to the office. It will start, and it runs but the idle is virtually non existant. It didnt cut out, but it is literally idiling at almost 0 rpm.
Its knackered isnt it? :(
Hey Lee
It doesen\'t sound too good, did you think it was running lean then ?
but however hopefully it is just a popped off hose or something
Dave
I dont know if it was lean.
It was slightly overboosting though and I didnt know if this is ok. At least I can console myself that if it was that thats done it then it would probably have happened on the rollers anyway.
If it has blown, then this is probably it for me as I dont have the money to rebuild it.
I seem to remember your engine being rebuilt by a company
Is it not under warranty at all?
Fingers crossed mate I know how you feel, its probably a hose or something so don\'t worry too much
Dave
Try this:
Hold the revs at about 1500 with the throttle.
Watch your boost gauge, if it\'s fluttering rapidly then sorry to say you\'ve thrown at least one tip. If not, then it\'s something else - hurrah! You can but hope......
Regards
Max
Hi Max
yep thats exactly what mine has done :(
Dave
You got a rebuild sorted yet Dave, or has the allure of a more unreliable vehicle become too much (TVR) ;)
It would be a shame to see you go!
End of thread Hijack.
Regards
Max

Sorry to hear that Dave, makes me glad i had mine rebuilt before it failed completely.
Lee - hope it\'s not a tip *finger crossed*
Iain
yes its all sorted I think now :)
will make a decision when I am up and running again as to whether I will keep it, I might yet ! :)
Dave
Just gone and tried.
At idle its fluttering about. At 1500 rpm its still fluttering about. This is all in the negative section of the boost gauge.
I put it to 3000 rpm, and it doesnt flutter there.
Verdict?
Sorry :(
Thrown a tip I\'d say :(
Or more likely just part of it, if it\'s ok\'ish at higher revs.
Regards
Max
Bugger.
Is it ok for me to drive it home?
Anyone got any sugesstions on how much it would be worth as is if I wanted to sell it?
Lee
yep the engine tips seal better at high revs cos there is less time to lose gas etc through the broken tip from the chamber
Sorry mate, mine does the same, boost gauge flutters at low revs but if you increase the revs then it doesen\'t. Diagnosis is a broken tip
First thing to do is get a compression test done, I would imagine one rotor will be crap
or maybe its something else, here hoping :)
Dave
Lee
assuming thats whats happened and I hope it hasn\'t
you can drive it but bear in mind (especially if you drive it hard)that you run the risk of chucking bits of the tip into the turbos and face an even bigger bill
Dave
Yeah, fine to drive home mate, just don\'t give it any boost and keep the revs as low as you can to prevent further damage.
I drove mine all the way back from York- South coast last year when mine went.
You can probably take about £2k off its usual value if the engine is blown, I reckon :(
Regards
Max
you can take the price of a rebuild off and a bit more for the hassle if its blown i reckon
Blown engines are a unknown quantity for a buyer cos they don\'t know how much damage has been done until its been stripped right down and inspected
Dave
I was thinking more of exact numbers.
Like would 5k or something be reasonable or not? If someone were to pay that then they would have a nice car with an engine specced how they wanted providing they didnt mind the hassle.
I don\'t have a clue about resale values, and I don\'t know anything about your car anyways :)
get it rebuilt ! :)
Dont think I can.
Dont have enough money just lying there that I can afford to rebuild it. I could stick it on the Credit Card, but seeing as im also un-employed (bar this crappy temp job) this may not be the best idea around.
To top it off, my insurance is due in <2 months and I didnt think I was going to be able to get it insured next year anyway.
mate thats a pain in the arse, your money is better spent at this precise moment on a specialist diagnosis and compression test
then you will be in a better position and can decide how to proceed
lifes a bitch sometimes my friend
I\'m really sorry to hear about your motor:(. I think your best bet is to get it re-built using your credit card to pay for it, then you\'d be able to sell the car with a full warranty etc etc for alot more than you\'d be able to sell a blown up FD for imo.
But as said previously get it checked out and find out exactly what is wrong with her, before you make your decision.
Good luck getting her sorted,
Paul:)
Hii Lee,
so sorry to hear about your troubles mate, one thing that does bother me about rx7\'s is the reliability and normally i run mine at low boost with the boost right down as low as it goes!
Hope you can find a solution if not post some pics and hopefully someone will take her:(
Hope it hasn\'t put you off the rotary\'s?
Goodluck
Sorry to hear lee,
thinking about how much bhp you said the car had with just the few mods you had makes me think that they were running very agressive timing advance especially at around the peak torque area. Which ok at a set boost level but anything above that level whatever it would be set at 0.8 or 0.9 bar then your timing advance becomes too much for the given boost level and detonation is the result. How much did you overboost by ? and didn\'t you have a boost controller ?
rgds
No I dont have a boost controller - it runs 1 bar but it just runs like that from the ECU. I dont know what it was going to either as the guage gets a bit hard to read over 1bar. It didnt seem to go that much over this, maybe 1.1 just a sort of fluction around that area.
Lee
I don\'t know for definite but I doubt very much it was running lean with your setup it\'s more than likely the advance on your chipped ecu at the that boost. I am sure those knightsports chips are tuned/designed for .9 bar Stil you never know with a bit of luck it might be something a lot simpler and the engine is fine. If so the first thiong I would buy is a boost controller.

Booger (http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0903/mittelgrosse/medium-smiley-100.gif) sorry to hear of yer seeming woe (http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0903/traurig/sad-smiley-021.gif) Fingers crossed you manage to land on yer feet in then end....How long have you been with the agency can\'t you get a loan if you have 3 previous slips or such like? Anyway dont wana get you in debt as i fekin hate the stuff but as i say hope it aint as gloomy as it may appear.......(http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0903/traurig/sad-smiley-066.gif)
Si
Yeah well as said the thing for me to do is get it looked at and just go from there, so thats what im going to arrange.
Man what a shitty thing to happen, a bet u feel ilike RX7s have somthing against u!
No chance of getting sponsored for your drifting?
Yeah was thinking that might be worth persuing considering at the very least 2 magazines are covering it. Thing is I couldnt do that without commiting to a year, and cant do that if I cant get it insured lol - its all fun :rollin
Im just going to get it looked at and hopefully sorted ASAP.
Sorry to hear of what sounds like your engines demise Lee :(
I would have driven my car home if I could have, but after my tip went it wouldn\'t hold a solid rpm at any point, and even with my foot on the floor would only do 55mph tops. Not a nice experience.
I agree that getting it rebuilt on the credit card and then selling it is the best way for you to go, I doubt you\'ll find many people willing to give any real money for an FD with a dead engine.
whats the specs of the car Lee? Driving a RX without some backup cash is always risky I\'d say... Hope you get it sorted tho:)
If you need a rebuild, then I agree with the lads - put the bill on the CC then sell it... OR maybe ask a family member to lend it to you?
sorry to hear that:( bet you can\'t bear to look at her now. I know i was gutted when it happened to me.
i think it\'s best to get her fixed and then sell. with the spare cash maybe a T2 tuned:D
rik
Ahh ok let me just clear a little up.
I do have money that can sort it, its not that it just wont be done - I just cant really afford to spend it! Its not an intentional thing. Back when I got the RX7 I had a job. Now I dont really, but I still have the car. As the insurance and everything was paid for it was cheaper to keep the car till at least insurance renewal considering the silly quotes I was getting on any other car.
I just need to find a way of getting around now. Going to get the RX7 looked at ASAP but even so I dont have access to any other cars. My brother took me to work this morning but his car is knackered too. Going to be a fun couple of weeks in my house. This weekend, I will probably be found hunting for a shed!
Was offered a cheap MR2 Turbo last night to get me around. Really wanted to take it but insuring it will cost more than Id be paying for it
Gutted to hear aboyt your motor mate.
You have PM.
Cheers Jay...:wave
Jay,
I dont seem to have the PM?
Cheers
Lee
Any news on the car yet mate? I might be interested in the car, if you were asking the right amount of money for it...
Let me know
Ronan
Rear rotor blown, but im going to get it fixed as I have a feeling that if I were to try and sell it how it is peoples offers would just be taking the piss. Makes more sense to fix it.
