Title: A couple of FC questions.
Post by: allywrx on April 17, 2008, 08:33:06 PM
Hi guys  :)

I have a couple of questions regarding my 1989 FC.
Firstly:
My manifold seems to be cracked. I have been having a look on e-bay at these stainless jobbies which all seem to have an external wastegate takeoff. Are the FC\'s externally gated as standard?
How do you guys rate these cheapo manifolds? Any issues with cracking like you get with some other versions?

Secondly:
3rd and 4th gear synchros seem to be on their way out in my gearbox. A friend of mine has a spare FD box sitting, do you know if this will fit without too much hassle?
If it doesn\'t fit how easy is it to get spare parts for these gearboxes nowadays?

Any help appreciated.
Thanks. :Thumbs-up

Ally

Hi Ally,

Generally standard turbo cars have internal wastegates... So that mani wont work im afraid... And some of the ebay mani\'s are actually quite good... But most need to be polished around the welds to get a better flow from it...

Dont know about the FD gearbox... If you have enough money im sure some1 could make it fit :)

Cheers
Andy

Just to clarify,
TII turbos are interally wastegated, getting one of those SS manifolds will mean getting a T4 turbo to go on it, then its some custom oil and water lines and a new downpipe (as the manifold spaces the turbo out and forward about a foot), not to mention an external wastegate.
Best to try find another standard TII manifold.

FD gearbox bolts to the engine but thats it, clutch is different, mount is different.   FC Gearboxes are dirt cheap, but you may struggle to find a low mileage one.

Turbo:  as above

Thanks for the replies people, very helpful. :Thumbs-up Shame about the gearbox issues. I suspected as much  regarding the manifolds.

vixpy1: If you find your old manifold drop me a PM and I will buy it off of you. :)
Thanks.

I have a manifold and a TII gearbox if you are interested. I have gone stainless with T4 turbo and external wastegate.
I\'ll check the manifold for cracks but to be honest they all do it and it will be hard to find one without any of some sort. Minor cracks are OK as i bet they have been like that for years.
TII box will not fit the EGI unless you change the propshaft (have one of those as well) think it should all fit but someone will know for sure.

hmmmmmmmmm.........XSpower one !!   well well be, its on but waiting on gaskets before i plumb it in permanently.  made for the rotary this one, large exhaust but other than that we\'ll see how it goes. Its a T4 with external wastegate so a bit of work to do there. Should be posting some pics of it once i have my gaskets and then i can show not only the setup but the removal of the emissions as well etc etc.

Cool cool, sounds very similiar to what I\'m going through right now.. got a stainless T4 manifold, a massive 60mm wastegate, and a hybrid T04E that doesnt want to fit on the stainless or standard manifold!.. pain in the ass lol. I got rid of all the emissions crap and solenoids before the engine was in the car tho luckily. Followed a guide for rats nest simplification off of a yank forum.

Ooh interesting news Pete. I take it the box changes gear ok? No sign of excessive synchro wear? Mine crunches badly into 2nd and 3rd so if it\'s better than that then I\'ll take it. :Thumbs-up

vixpy1: Cheers for having a look. I am going to try and find a stainless one now I think.

I will put the box to one side and we\'ll sort out the politics later.  I must admit that i have forgotten to check the manifold for cracks but the stainless ones are so cheap that even if you have to re-work them internally a bit its still a very good upgrade.

I should also have the adapter that enable you to fit the to4e to the manifold, i have two actually but best to measure the bolt holes and then i can be certain.

Well I think the guide came from www.teamfc3s.org/forums (http://www.teamfc3s.org/forums) , Try searching for rats nest removal or emissions removal... I\'ll try find it if I have time tomorrow.

How much do you want for the box? :)

how much do you want to pay? whatever the price we have to arrange delivery as well. Bit of a journey for me. Will get a price on a courior, more likey ANC.
Box has to be worth £100. They are going for more than that in the USA and over here but depends on how bad people want it.
let me know.

£100 sounds like a fair price to me. :yes
Just let me know how much a courier would cost. I would come and collect if I wasn\'t so far away (approximately a 774 mile round trip :eek).
