Post by: NixRX7 on April 12, 2008, 11:50:01 AM
Just a quick question from anybody who knows about spraying.

Would this gun

work ok with this compressor

I have another question as well, this time regarding paint, i have used the search function and read just about every post about re sprays, but i\'m still a bit confused about the variuos paints available these days.

Only spraying i have done has always invloved Cellulose.

So now when i am looking for paint i have found the following

Cellulose (use celly thinners) no laquer needed
Base coat (use 2k thinners) 1k/2k Laquer coat required
1K (use celly thinners) 1K laquer maybe needed
2K (use 2k thinners / hardner) 2K laquer required

So now i have to try and decide which to use, i realise 2k has a dodgy cumalitive effect, and the only mask i have is a basic 3M one that cost a tenner.

I have no experience of any of them bar Celly, which would be the best for a novice.

I doubt i will use 2k as it goes off with the hardener and i will probably be going slow and dont want it going hard in the gun etc

which leaves a choice of the other 3, any recommendations would be welcome, along with any advice.

ta

Nick

forgot to add i have an astra estate i\'m spraying first to get some practise before i start on the rex

2k paint all the way, easyer to use and you get a far better finish :) just get a really ggod mask and use only in a well ventilated area. :yes

I keep toying with the idea of 2k, but i have absolutely no experience with it, plus the fact if i go to slow it might go off inside the gun.

Whats polyester basecoat ?

Saw this on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CAR-PAINT-BASECOAT-5lt-BLACK-METALLIC-FREE-LACQUER_W0QQitemZ280110940187QQihZ018QQcategoryZ30923QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem

Any thoughts on that spary gun and my compressor ?

2k paint wont go hard in the gun bud unless you take 3 hours to paint something lol

i use a upol gun, cost me £80 and its great!
Compressures fine bud, same size n power as mine and i paint full cars ok with it, sometimes struggles if you have a air sander on for a while tho, just need to stop every now n then to let it charge bck up :D

What are you gunna paint?  full car?

Yep, got two cars to paint, first is the Pub astra (my practise piece) if that turns out ok i\'m gonna do my Rex.

I\'m still not overly keen on 2k paints, too much mixing and things to go wrong, whats that poleyester paint like i put a link to.

I\'m guessing i would need to use summit like UPOL P88 primer, then flat it all out and spray the poleyester base followed by 1k laquer

Another one of the reasons i dont really want to use 2K is that i\'m right next to a farm yard and if i\'m correct 2K fumes/spray is attracted to water, i\'m a bit worried in case it gets in the water feed in the various sheds.

Might be over reacting but i dont want to take any chances (farmers usually have guns)

i realise its not anywhere near as easy as it looks, which was one of the reasons i was thinking about using Cellulose, if i fook it up, then its just a lot of sanding to flat it all.

Think im gonna try spraying the astra in the paint i linked to tho, polyester base and 1k clear, less to measure and mix so less to go wrong.

If it all goes horribly wrong i\'m only £100 out of pocket.

Celly does dry a lot quicker, and generally without as much encouragement (no baking etc), means you can lay a coat down and within 15 min you can be ready to lay another down. 2k tends to be a bit more slippery and if you are doing a lot of curved and rippled surfaces it can cause it to slip down in layers creating some monster runs and sags. It takes a long time to go off as it is a chemical reaction with the hardener, the plus side being that once the paint is hard, its HARD. Celly always seems to stay quite soft.

Also availability is becoming an issue with celly, apparently black celly was the first colour to go, but many others are following suit, due to the enviromental effect. -And I wouldnt recommend spraying 2pak without an air fed mask hooked up to an external compressor (i.e. placed in clean air), even with an extractor fan, air fed mask and brand new filters I ended up getting the \'2-pak flu\', where you get a stiff neck, headache, really sore throat and general sh*ttiness for a day or two after exposure. nasty stuff.

yep, gonna deffo stay clear of the 2k stuff, gonna use the polyester base which you mix with thinners, no hardner and no nasty isocyanates (least i dont think so)

Plus i want to add some blue pearl to the clears to add a nice shimmer effect, and you dont usually use clear on top of celly, tho i suppose you could.

The compressor you stated will be fine for a spray gun up to 1.8mm 2.0mm needle. The thing to look for is the F.A.D. Free Air Delivery CFM: 7.8 (221 L/Min) (data from the compressor you are considering)

The spray gun best suited is the

AZ3 HTE
AZ3 HTE AV
1.8
2.0
205
260
300
*5118
680

From your chosen spray gun.

Go for 2k use a suitable 2k mask from 3m. But do your spraying a little at a time... Taking breaks outside in the fresh air. As the isocyanate\'s in 2k paint will  enter your body through your eyes and any exposed skin!

Also consider a conventional spray gun over HVLP or HTE spray guns as they are easier to get a good finish from.
