Title: Need some advice for a friend
Post by: rwdvectra on April 09, 2008, 09:46:19 PM
Hope i\'ve put this in the right section if not feel free to move. I\'ve joined up for a friend who doesn\'t have intenet access.

He imported a gen 3 rx-7 last year and finally got hold of it a couple months ago. When he first tried to start it up it wouldn\'t fire up. I cleaned up the plugs and turned oveer the engine to get the fuel out and then it just started.it ran rough for a bit but settled down and idled quite nicely.

After parking it up for a bit we had the same trouble starting it again. Also i took it up the road and there\'s no boost or very litttle boost.

I have no knowledge of rotary engine\'s and don\'t want to give him advice as i can\'t be sure. Does the car need setting up to run on uk fuel as well? it runs very rich and coming of the throttle creates blues flames without trying.

any other advice/links people might have would be appriciated

thanks lee

hmmmm , try a few things , does it at least rev cleanly through to 6k even though there is no boost?
It could be a faulty map sensor therefore causing overfueling or the vacuum pipe to it has split for come off.
Or there is a leak in the intercooler pipes or the plugs are fduked.
Defo sounds like an overfuelling problem.
If its completely standard then makes sure you run only Optimax, if it has non standard exhaust , air filter etc then he will need a uprated ECU and have it mapped

thanks for the reply. The car revs freely with no problems. The car has some bit\'s done to it, non std exhaust system and air filter being some mods done. I\'ve told him to only run onoptiax which he\'s done but the car has hardly been driven other than gently to a place he\'s parking it at. I usually seen rx-7\'s on apexi power fc management. is this the most popular set up on them?

I\'ll check any vacums tomorrow. We changed the plugs for new one\'s and there was no spark from them and the car wouldn\'t strat so we put the old plugs back in and it started first time. They were the same plugs as the one\'s the car came with so not sure what was wrong with them. Is there a way to get any fault codes out of the ecu. Speaking from a vauxhall point of view you can bridge ports on the diagnostics plug to flash out codes on the dash. is there anything like that on the mazda\'s.

thanks

Hi rwdvectra, indeed you can do :) have a look over here for the list of codes and how to get them (you will need a non flashing 12v LED light)
http://www.k-rad.com/errcodes.html

also if you need a manual for the car: http://foxed.ca/foxed/index.php?page=rx7manual#thirdgen

Its for an american car so some things are not aplicable or on the wrong side, but its real handy for fault finding and how things should operate. Good luck with the car and tell us what you find :D
