Hi everyone, I\'ve spent the last couple of days slowly but carefully installing my recently acquired Greddy SMIC.
The SMIC is now in including my own design ducting at the bottom which I will complete once the indction box is in.
The problem I\'m having is that due to the extra width of the SMIC I won\'t be able to get the induction box in without cutting off the pipe that comes out of the right side of the box.
Can anyone advise me what this is for and if there\'s anyway it can be bypassed without any major issues arising.
First pic show the pipe coming out onthe right
Second pic shows where it goes inside, looks like a smaller box, not sure whats inside.
Third pic shows the pipe coming from the engine which connects to the other end of the induction box.
TIA
this might be a good oportunity to remove the stock air box set up and replace it with an aftermarket filter. the stock box will prob be restrictive.
I second Jamie\'s notion, good opportunity to get some Apexi\'s in there. That pipe is what gives you the "wosh" noise :Giggle, best put a nice silencer on it if you go down that route.
I\'d prefer to keep the stock box, already got a HKS panel to go in there.
I\'ve just been reading up on RX7Club.com and will probably do the stock box mod where you create an opening in the bottom of the box and then use some ducting to direct air from next to the radiator. It seems to be a well proven mod.
I just need to know what I can do about that pipe cos there\'s no other way to get the box in with the SMIC.
Does it go to the stock dump valve?
Cheers.
Think that pipe is part of the airpump anti-mooing silencing affair, which is why it comes out of a little separate compartment. You could put a small breather filter on the pipe in your third photo, plug the hole in the box and then do without the one that one causing the problems.
A-ha, cheers Nik, anti-mooing, is that a technical term.
Does that mean it\'s not critical for it to have a supply of cold air as long as it has a breather filter on?
By the way, unusual to see that pic in your avatar, I have the album!
Anti-mooing is very technical, yeah! Believe it or not, mooing is exactly what happens with the airpump when you put filters on having taken out the airbox. You need a restrictor to narrow the internal diameter in the pipe in the third pic to stop it happening. I guess it\'s some sort of harmonic resonance effect, but I\'dve sounded like a right poncy knob if I\'d said that, mooing is far more descriptive! The whole separate chamber in the box and weird dangling intake pipe bit are simply Mazda\'s proprietary anti-moo system, so if you put a small breather filter on the airpump intake pipe and then a restrictor in the one you indicated, it should be fine to get rid of the dangling one out the side, though I guess you might want to put some gauze or foam over the hole it left to stop crud getting in. You may be able to leave the airpump line connected to the stock airbox as standard, rather than put a filter on it. I couldn\'t with my induction kit, it still mooed even with a restrictor in it, which is why I suggested the breather filter.
Arrgh! I\'m confusing myself now! Hope that made sense!
Cool, cheers for that, might have the car running by the weekend after all.
I think I\'ll connect the airpump pipe to the air box as standard and eliminate the pipe on the side, seems like the tidiest solution and easily reversible later on down the line.
Really appreciate the info.
I also had a look on the US club site which helped a little, heres the thread if anyone else is interested;
