Title: offered a good deal on a RX7 - opinions please
Post by: markj113 on April 08, 2008, 01:34:20 PM
Im a total Rotary/RX7 newbie but have set my heart on an RX7.

After being messed around on ebay trying to sell my modded FTO (winners messaging me a few days after winning saying they cant get the cash to pay for it :2Mad ) I thought i\'d try asking a few RX7 sellers on ebay if they would be interested in doing a swap.

Had one guy interested, the car looks nice to my newbie eyes but what do you RX7 gurus think -

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=200214383043&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=010 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=200214383043&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=010)

The drivers seat has a tear but i\'d probably swap it back to an original RX7 seat.

The other issue for me is the rear storage bins, will have my first little one in about 2 months so I would need to convert it to a 2+2 , which if I read correct on here shouldnt be problem doing a deal with someone swapping the rear for a set of seats.

£70 in the tank and lasts ages if you poddle at 30 or 100....yeah ok mate

No mention of a rebuild and with 54,000 i guess that time maybe coming soon

Particularly like this quote:-

"YOU CAN FIT 70POUNDS IN THE TANK AND IT LASTS FOR AGES WEATHER YOU DRIVE ROUND AT 30 OR AT 100"

Just plain no... You will get around 250 miles out a tank ish...

The mileage is high and although in km/h converts to around 51K miles which is near engine rebuild time usually.

There are no pics of the engine bay.

There isn\'t enough information to be honest in the advert to assess the "value for money" in all honesty.

54k no sign of a rebuild, the guy has owned the car for less than 6 months and is getting shot of it, has been resprayed, the seller seems to know nothing about rotaries and honestly thinks it is an economical car (£70 lasts for ages!?!? right)

If it was me I\'d steer well clear of that one as you can find better with more history if you look around. How much did you want to spend?

Agree Ash.....

Only had the car a couple of months and already selling it? Hot Potato springs to mind.....

You can get a better example with a rebuilt engine fro not much more than that to be honest.... Have you got a price range ??

The body looks nice enough, so offer the guy £3000 and factor in a cost of a rebuild at £3K
or like people say on here look for one with the rebuild already done

thanks for the advice guys, had a few emails off him now and he hints at the engine is on its last legs - think ill give it a miss.

So much for taking the easy option and swapping, ill have to stick with it and sell my car first and have another look with a wad of cash in the bank ready.

here\'s the last email I just got -

"i got the car last october, and have had no problems with the engine, i don\'t know loads myself about the rotary engine, but did look into it, the £3000 is for a full rebuild but i go told as long as the engine is good, the only main thing to do at this mileage is to get new rotary tips, which i\'ve been quoted between £700 and £1500 depending on where you want to go,i took that into consideration with the price because once the engine has had a rebuild its worth more towards £7000 its does\'nt smoke or misfire, there is ever slight drag but this is probably down to the tips getting ready for changing."

The tires compression seem right! *nod*

The body work looks nice but also what suprises me about this is the guy has not shown a picture of the enginebay! i dont want to jynx my own engine but im at 103k km without a rebuild. and starts both hot and cold then again i know mine had work done in japan but i cant figure out what not speaking the language.

Also i wish i got loads of miles for £70 that lasts me around 350km

Ha ha ha Fuel lasts for ages in a RX7? :rollin

Tell him he needs to stop smoking crack.

Hopefully if he sells the REX he will have enough money for re-hab

The guy obviously doesn\'t know that much about the RX7s as such just walk away from this one.

won\'t help ya, the motors that pop at around 60k are usually water seals, not tip wear, i believe

Quote from: markj113"...but i go told as long as the engine is good, the only main thing to do at this mileage is to get new rotary tips..."

Yes, you could just get new tips, but that\'s assuming that every other component in the engine is in perfect condition.  My new rx is currently being rebuilt, despite the engine in it only being 2-3 years old (~25k miles, dunno details exactly, as it was in the car when i brought it) and it\'s needed a full rebuild including housings (£4k) immediately.  (according to rotechniks, previous rebuild was a bit of a cowboy job)

so, whatever you do, always budget at least 3.5-4k for a rebuild :/

although i cant see the ebay listing now, i think i rode past this car this morning.  tbh from the outside it looked nice enough, but would want a GOOD nose round the engine bay before i commited. looks to have bbs alloys, knightsports bonnet and either knightsports or apexi bmper; interior seemed clean enough, and had bins and black surrounds on the dials so i guess it is an R2.
