As you may have seen I am rebuilding an RX7 from the ground up. I am new to the rotary engine so picking it up as I go along!
I gather any mods to the engine require ECU mapping to be sure not to damage the rotor tips. I am working on a bit of a budget tunning wise at the moment and want to know if the HKS F-Con V is a good option to get the best out of the car. I only intend to run a few mods to start with. I have an induction kit, a decat pipe, large SMIC and a boost controller. I was intending to remove the airpump when I fit the decat.
I presume I need some sort of aftermarket ECU setup to allow these mods? can I get away with any of them while running a standard ECU? liKe the SMIC?
Where will the F-Con system be limited compared to a power FC?
I gather there is a graphic control system that goes with the F-con unit to enable mapping.. Is this a DIY bit of kit with a bit of knowlegde or strictly for Professional set-up.
all info greatfully received.
Thank you
Lee
go PFC, more tuners can map it. Apexi will be good for a decent amount of power.
The power FC seems to be a more popular choice, but the Apexi might go bust soon so i dunno about aftersales service:

I live near Portsmouth.. and I gather from here Re-worx are in that area and they are RX7 gods and HKS agents?! Might give them a call!
I had a Power FC on my Skyline.. cost a lot more and expensive to set-up not sure how that comepares with the HKS set-up? Especially if I am not going to extensively modify it in the near future.. i.e single turbo.
i think Reworx will say the fcon pro over the standard fcon, i was quoted 1200 for it including mapping.
Go all out MOTEC
yep Apexi for ease of tuning with a datalogit and wideband connected to it, more tuners out there
or Motec MR2 which is actually cheaper then the FCON plus with the MR2 you can download the software yourself and connect with a laptop just with a serial cable, but complex to use the software then Apexi and datalogit, but the Motec has more features,
I can tune the Apexi and looking to learn the Motec at the mo
If you can afford it, go F-Con Pro, far better piece of kit. Was fortunate to get hold of mine second hand, had if fitted last week by, you guessed it, REWORX and very happy with the results.
These guy\'s are awesome at what they do and I can\'t recomend them enough.
Heard too many horror stories of poor components in the apexi\'s giving up the ghost and taking the engine with it!
Guess you get what you pay for, cheap ecu controllers=cheap components.
Currently putting out 337.9 fwhp with standard downpipe, hks intake, de cat Racing Beat back box and GReddy boost controller. Only limiting factor was fueling and cooling at ther moment.
Its only the latest batch of Apexis that have had problems with quality control, before that Apexi was very reliable.
But I would go Motec in terms of money no object for the best ECU on the market for the FD you just cant beat its logging capabilties far better then even FCON
Cheers for the replies!! I am just tyring to get hold of reworx as we speak!
I am limited on budget at the mo othe wise I would porbably go with the power fc as I am familiar with it.. I only asked about the standard F-Con V as that is what I have been offered! How much can you pick up the gold versions for secondhand?
Cheers
Lee
All depends if you can get the Power FCs brand new at the moment with all Apexi company problems in Japan.
So keep a look out for second hand ones for around £400 on here,
FCon Pro used I have only seen one or two over here they went for around £600-700.
Motec MR2 will cost just under £900 brand new
Might be selling my V Pro Gold soon if your still looking in about a month month
ohhh and what ECU you going for?

:Laugh :Laugh :Laugh :Laugh :Laugh :Laugh
ahh going the Motec route same as me eh lol
possibly, not before the supra box and wastegate is on though and I have enough dollar left
ahh you are defo going Supra box, did you find a six speeder then?
Which brand gearbox\\bellhousing adapter you going for?
sorry to thread hijack, but at what point does changing from an apexi to an Fcon/motec become worthwhile? i take it they are overkill for twins and smallish singles, and really are for those looking to wring every last Hp out? or does the map resolution on them (i know the hks has more points, i guess the motec does as well) give better driving/response?
If your running a big single on big ports you will need to go HKS as the apexi cant seem to contol the idle on a half bridge brilliantly and plus you can fine tune the HKS a lot more and get extra ponies over the Apexi. For twins and up to T04z i would stay with Apexi as it does job well.
Mark, off the Supra OC, friend of a friend, ill have a word if your really interested in going that route.
Adaption plate will be custom made by a transmission place in Kent, ill get you details if you want. Need the box first though
Cheers for that ash, i guess that saves me a few quid, well unless i find an F-Con at a bargain price.....

Defo interested see if he will give us a discount if we got two adapter plates made at the same time, be interested if they came in cheaper then the Oz place
will keep you posted dude, getting hold of the boxes wont be a problem trust me.
Marco no probs dude, ecu do come up cheap sometimes, need someone that is breaking a car. Sometimes the Vendors get second hand ones in
I am keeping my eyes out then for the apexi and the F-con Pro! I spoke to re-worx and it has to be the pro version otherwise they can\'t do it?
What\'s this about a six speed supra box?!
If you have a design/3D model of the adaptor you require. (I presume it\'s to be machined in ally?) I maybe able to get a good price for you?
Lee
You will need to speak to Blitz about that.
The supra manual box can take a big wack through it so seems the best way to go at the mo. People have started using the 8 box but there is a lot of modification to do in the car as the gear lever comes forward hell of a lot and sits where your stereo is, so the dash will need work.
The supra box sits fine and with the adaption plates will make a nice upgrade for the FD\'s
I have a F-con pro I dont want.
Been looking at gearboxes over the last year, Greddy and HKS boxes to noisy (dog gears) and expensive for my taste, the RX8 box is an option but dont like the gear lever position and you have to mod where the clutch slave cylinder sits.
The Supra boxes are designed to take 500bhp from the factory, so with an adapter plate you can keep the stock FD bell housing, starter motor, slave cylinder. Got a mate with a Supra, he runs 580 at the wheels still with his stock 6 speeder with no groans from it for the last couple of years
Seen the Gilken boxes Mark?
£1450 delivered from Japan
But arnt they dog boxes?
Dragon...Let me know price... you can e-mail ma on Leeroy_25@hotmail.com
Don\'t suppose you are the dragon from thew GTR OC who pm\'d me about the midnight purple number?
Cheers.
Is this six speed box simple swap then other than the adaptor plate? It sounds so!
Are we saying Blitz has the machining data for said adaptor plate?
Tar!
Quote from: BlitzBoyBut arnt they dog boxes?
not sure mate, thought you could tell me
no I dont have the machining data, I have contacted a company in Oz who sell the product already .
I think they are dog boxes the Greddy just hate the noise of them, rather hear my noisey engine exhaust
Just let me know when your ready Mark
