Title: T04E Single turbo conversion
Post by: imebgo on April 07, 2008, 12:30:55 PM
Im getting hold of an 1992 RX7 from a friend who has not been able to resolve some issues with the emissions system, and turbos.  It looks like most of the electrics are pretty much shagged! after it came back from an engine rebuild a few years back.  Since then it never really worked properly!

I\'ve had it running, and I can get it to idle correctly but each time we come back to it theres something else wrong! Solenoids not working, etc..

I was thinking about stripping it all the rats nest etc.. and convert to a small single like a T04E.  I have converted mine to a T04S and this included pretty much every other mod you can imagine, fuel, IC, etc...

So, my question is, what would be the minimum required to acheive this, im thinking

1. Clutch
2. Apexi
3. Additional Injectors + controller - OR Uprated secondaries
4. Uprated SMIC
5. Turbo kit

Im thinking I can get away without changing:

1. Fuel Pump ??
2. SMIC -> FMIC ??
3. FPR ??
4. Radiator ??

Im hoping I can get everything in the first section for 2k (second hand/new whatever) which makes the car a deal for me, he wants 2k for it.  But if I need to upgrade everything else, then it might be wiser to think about non sequential conversion?

id say you cud get away without the 2nd list, mines running 350atfw power on standard pump n injectors which is about the same as a to4e would push.. but id recomend getting a fmic :)

Is an FMIC a good iodea without uprating the radiator, considering its position behind the IC?

Maybe a VMount is an option - but thats not going to be cheap

T04E will push MORE power then twins, Kash is running about 390 Flywheel power which is around 330 at the wheels. Gary Marks run just under 400 Flywheel three years ago with a T04E

So this is what you need as a minimum
1.Uprated Fuel Pump
2.850cc Injectors in the Primary postions so you will have 4*850cc
3.Apexi ECU
4.Clutch
5.Go for an uprated intercooler in the stock Position (SMIC)

PS if you do want an FMIC I will have one cheap as I found one in my Garage I bought used, but needed a bigger FMIC in the end.
Also Run 4 years on a standard Rad before upgrading

You can get twins to run over 400bhp @ flywheel, mine is somewhere arounf there.  Warthogs was dynod 389.2 @ Wheels

Not disputing that, but a T04E general rule of Thumb on a stock ported Engine will push out more power then Twins 9 times out of 10, plus standard Twins on High boost past 1 BAR do not last too long, Warthog had to replace his twin turbo pack a couple of times when he was chasing the record.
So for reliable power a T04E will produce less heat on high boost then twins

i thought a to4e on .8 bar of boost was about the 330-350 mark? was kinda the reason i never went for a kit i seen

Its all in the tuning and porting my scottish friend, please do not be mislead by the pub talk of Boost pressures. Its all about Volume of air and flow
a T04E at 10 psi will push more volume of air then Twins at 10psi , therefore more molecules of air in the combustion process = more power.
With WI you can make the air denser at the same boost pressure which again makes more power.

i guess the problem is everyone is looking for a "bolt on" power figure which is hard to give as all engines are different, different porting, different injectors, different interooler etc and one of the main factors different tuners and of course different rolling road setups will give out different readings

Yep quite right. The only place you can see actual real power is on the drag strip with terminal speeds in the 1/8 and 1/4 mile, anything past 120mph in 1/4 is pushing well past 400bhp

Cheers guys,

Im going to arrange to have the car shipped over to mine, so I can have a good stab at getting it working with the twins.. and if its a complete nightmare im going to look into a T04E with a FMIC...

a good cheap option for a FMIC is GReddy ones that you can get of ebay for around 4-500 quid.
Ive got one on my car and does the job, getting a t04r fitted soon so i will post up how the intercooler copes with it

pah, I\'m regularly running mid 8\'s atm in my BF1, with terminals in the region of 170 +

I have one of those installed on mine with a T04S, I expect it to cope fine ;)

lol no worrys bud, n yeah i knows its never a simple roll of the shelf figure you get :) i mean im well chuff mines running 350 on twins :S

But if fitting a single then me personaly would get all the fueling uprated too cus if it goes lean it goes pop :(

The T04E is a great little street turbo... full boost by 3k on a street ported engine but I noticed it runs out of puff over 6.5k... I got 330 atw @ 0.9bar but this was with a slipping clutch and crappy plugs.. I noticed power jump to 355 atw when Max was mapping for 1 bar, but I was getting ignition breakup so he called it a day at 0.9 bar... this was with uprated SMIC, stock clutch, stock injectors, FPR and BNR33 fuel pump :D

So when you getting a HKS Twin Power Kash :D and wack it to 1 Bar again?

Already got a Twin Spark, bought it straight after the mapping as I didn\'t like the sound of ignition break-up lol.... have to say the car felt MUCH better after I put it in :Thumbs-up.... To be honest most of the time I\'ve run the car at 0.85 bar and it\'s quick! Have had it upto a bar on few occasions and it\'s a BIG difference, hence the craving for more power... got my new tubby and secondary injector kit, waiting to get them put on and let JayDee work his magic... 1.2 bar... hell yeah !! :Laugh :Laugh

I\'d say more like full boost by just under 4...thats what mine does. If i am being honest. Certainly not under 3500.

I had mine rebuilt by WGT this winter with a bigger compressor wheel, not sure how much bigger, but the biggest they can get in. Running 1 bar i am at just over 360 ATW, but it holds boost much higher than it used to; on paper and you can feel it.

Damn site cheaper than a different turbo kit...good turbo the T04E :)
