Title: My New FD3S
Post by: rx7boy on April 04, 2008, 10:50:32 PM
Hey Everybody

Got my first Fd a couple of months back now and just thought I would put up a couple of pictures,

Mods:

Jap style front bumper (needs repair)
HKS Super Dragger Exhaust
Big Bore De-cat pipe
Hard Pipe Induction Kit
HKS Induction Kit
Jap Aero Wing Mirrors
18" Alloys not sure what make
Blitz race boost gauge!

All was going well until today when giving it a bit too much throttle:3gears-lh, I blew an apex seal (:2Mad )

Have spoken to mechanics they think so to so off for engine rebulid yaay

Managed to find a place to do it for £1600 fitted plus any parts that need replacing, which i thought was a really good price. Also getting the rotor housings street ported, might get turbos to non-sequential not sure!1 if anybody has any opinions on that topic please let me know.

Welcome to fd ownership!
I would get a apexi power fc ecu that\'s mapped for uk fuel and your mods so it doesn\'t go pop again after the rebuild

I saw your car on pistonheads when I was looking at fd\'s I think

Thanks for the welcome and advice

What fuel should I map it too, do you know if you can have switchable maps with apexi unit, on my tvr have 95 and 99 maps and just have a switch inside car. Any idea ??

Hello, welcome to the deep end! 1600 quid for a rebuild would be bargain of the year, but the parts prices could well add loads to that, so be aware of that possible pitfall. Definitely worth getting a mappable ECU if possible in the budget. Non-sequential seems a bit of a marmite mod, some people seem to love it. Not sure I see the point, personally, but the best thing would be to try and find someone who\'s done it who can take you for a spin, see if you like the power delivery.

Car looks good, though, you must\'ve been chuffed when it went pop so soon. Not. That spoilers a bit mahoosive, any idea what make it is?

Jeez that rex has got around.
Be careful with what the rebuild entails, for 1.6k you could be paying for false economy.
RXmotors charge something like 2.5k for a nice rebuild, try talking to them :)

The £1600 is just for rebuilding the engine and with parts we reckon it will total around £2500, the guy who is gonna do it has a really good reputation and everybody I know who has had their engine rebuilt have said that he is really good. He also will street port the rotor housings for £200 while the engine is out so thought that was a bit of a bargain.

Im looking to get a turbo upgrade but want to keep the twin turbo aspect, dont like the big single turbo lag. does anybody have any suggestions??

thanks

Who is this person!!!!....some here might know him...or is he on the forum?

You could just get a smaller single turbo like a t04e.

wow... that rex has been about a bit since I had it! Sorry to hear the engine went pop though...you got any ideas why it failed? (overboosting perhaps?)
If shes anything like what i remember her to be, shes generally really nice...needs tidying up a bit and im not sure if the previous owner sorted out the radiator leak that I sold it with?
I dont remember that car having a decat pipe tough...did the prev owner fit it? Also iirc them wheels are 17" :D

Not really sure why the car went pop was driving it pretty hard then stopped for a break, got back in car started it and it sounded like a lawnmower and no power!! Radiator was replaced by previous owner, I put large bore decat pipe on and also the polished hard pipes.

Still a bit messy inside tho, back seats are a bit torn up and aslo damage to left wing and bumper, have found a replacment wing but have no idea what the bumper type? make? is. i could get it repaired but as u probably know fiberglass is never full strength again.

Plan at the moment is to get the car rebuilt including all body work, have the housings street ported and get an apexi commander, whilst engine is out also get the turbo\'s ported, may go non sequential, the guy who will do will also open up the waste gate 0.4" so almost doubling. If I find a uprated twin turbo system for it then will go with that?

You mentioned about the wheels, do you know what make and model they are  cause really want to find centre covers for them. when owningthe car did you ever notice oil leak at all? any other info on the car would be great!!

thanks

I would have thought that the de-cat pipe and no other additional fueling might have impacted upon the engine going pop?

Yeah i think the decat pipe may have caused a boost spike in the cold weather which could have caused you to lose an apex seal. Aside from that when I had her, she was running great...i dont think the 2 owners who had it after me were particularly sympathetic...especially not the romanian guy who bought it from me...he was a prime plum in fact and had no concept of how to care for a rotary or indeed any car...luckily i dont think he had long...i think he was the one who initially bodged up the radiator with silicone sealant or something...
THe guy who bought it fro the romanian wasa  guy called Lee who i imagine you bought it from...he wasnt too much more aware I dont think of the rotary but still moved it on pretty fast!
I do remember the car having an oil leak from the turbo oil feed line which was drippingoil onto the manifold...you could see smoke comeing up thru the air intake pipes.
