Title: Wheel width???
Post by: darko32 on April 04, 2008, 09:40:22 PM
Hiya guys, was just wondering if anyone knew what the widest rear wheels you could fit on an rx7 and would this affect the going around corners handling at all?

Regards,

Taz

what size do you want to go to?

We are in the process of ordering some pretty large real wheels!!

Depends on the size of the arches at the back, if you want to run standard arches then you will need to find a company that will give you flexibility over the offsets, but from a rough calculation you can go up to probably an 11J with an ET30...

Wouldnt go to high on the front though as it ruins the feel, and unless you change the geometry of the suspension you wont be using the full width of the wheel anyway.

Actually 11j was pretty much what I wanted! What kind of modifications to the arches are you referring to? Like rolling them out? Would try and keep 9j at the front. What kind of sizes have you found work best for your track applications?

If you run an 11J you are going to have to modify the arches, and you are going to run pretty close to the trailing arm on the suspension.

We were working out wheels a couple of days ago, and our current wheel is a 9J on the rear, ET29.  This has 70mm worth of clearance inboard and 5mm clearance outboard.

So being that I was absolutely knackered last night.....I will give you a better calculation now!

If you are rolling the arches you can assume you might get another 10mm clearance.

By adding another 2" to the wheel, you are effectively adding 1" either side.  The inboard side isn\'t an issue, however you need to move the outboard side in as you only have 15mm not 25mm.  This would mean an offset of ET39.  If you wanted to guarantee that it will fit under then maybe go in a further 5mm so you would need an offset of ET44.

Maybe going with a 10.5J would be a better idea?

there are plenty of kits / arch extensions out there. as for mods at allow 11J,  - attach the arch, cut out the wing and re - weld it then make sure its well sealed etc. i am running 12J 19s on the rear of mine

you will do............. there are virtually none out there! and IF you find the width you want the chances are the offset wil be way out!!

they arent shocking. think it works out at £500 a wheel. compare that to iforge or asanti and thats very very cheap.
its all relative.......... yes they are more than most wheel brands but noone else makes 11" by 19s or 12" by 19s so these have to be custom made. thats why you pay a premium!

personally i would have had asanti but i couldnt justify paying £1000000 for a set lol

excellent, will be looking forward to seeing those atomic! by the way i just wanted to do abit of research on the term you used to describe the suspension mods needed to accomodate such a wheel, the line from the chassis to the hub? so shafster and jamie_supra did you make any suspension mods to get the most out of those 12j\'s?

We have made suspension mods yes....having a trial fit this weekend.  We have redone the entire suspension on the car!!  No more expensive wishbones anymore :D

the wheels are handmade with the correct offset etc. the actual wheel isnt any further away from the hub than a normal wheel. its just got a massive dish on the inside and the outside so spreads the load really evenly. also the wheels are a lot lighter than then stock alloys
i do have tien adjustables all round though. no other suspension work was needed!
