depends what you want it for, the more mods, the less reliable it is.

how old are you too? getting insured on a single might be hard if you\'re young.

Twin Turbo\'s are stock. All RX7\'s came from the factory this way. Insurers like stock cars.

Singles make more power = more modified = higher premiums

so if im buying a single turbo, it was at sometime a twin but have been converted to a single. is there much difference between the two on fuel?

Yes. ALL RX-7\'s were twin turbo from the factory. Any single turbo rex is aftermarket.

I\'m led to believe singles are slightly better on mpg. I could be wrong. Hopefully someone with more rotary experience can correct me if i\'m wrong.

Not neccesarily... the 400bhp one might have more reliability mods, a better map and serviced more often which would make it last just as long if not longer :Thumbs-up

with a twin the boost usually starts lower, so uses more go go juice if your just pottering about.

a single will spool later most of the time, so you get better economy when your pottering about it.

If its a weekend car why care about fuel, you\'ll be driving it properly all the time hehe?????????
mine does 13.48mpg and its a twin. Lucky i get free toy cars every week when i fill up at shell. sort of makes it all worth it :-)

Can\'t talk about singles as mine is a twin turbo. I get about 240 miles out of a tank, it typically costs me a little over £60 to fill up. Mine is a weekend car and I don\'t usually hang about.

The bloke I bought it from has a single turbo and he made lots of comments about how smooth the twin is.

Prior to the Rex I had a 200SX running Stage 1 mods with the boost at 1bar. By comparison to that the Rex is very smooth. When you put your foot down it just goes, there\'s no huge shove in the back when the turbo hits full boost like there was in the 200 instead it just pulls and pulls until the buzzer goes.

Just thought I\'d give you a comparison.

They feel quite slow on a duel caridgway, as there so planted and smooth.
its only when you look in the mirror or the speedo, or get inanother car you realise how quick they are.

I get less than 4mpg out of ours.....so Id hate to think what it would have done on twins!

Most likely a car making 400bhp with equal servicing and driving to a stocker will see higher wear and tear, but that wasn\'t what you said.

You said more mods = less reliable, thats cr4p.

If you take a stock motor, add a bigger rad, a better intercooler and a decent map, it should be much more reliable.

Remove the complicated / problematic twins and replace with a properly set up small / medium single at stock-ish boost and you have the optimum setup for reliability, with extra power and lower temps to boot.

Get a single if you can find one with the right mods done. just make sure the turbo DOES NOT have XS power wirtten on it.

Agreed, I\'ve had both and I believe my single is more reliable - lower inlet temps, less likely parts will fail (as 16year old parts replaced with uprated newer ones), premix instead of relying on omp, etc etc. Drive both before deciding, the twin turbo kick is a novelty at first but I prefer single:Thumbsup!

My twin turbo is for sale if your interested.  Running just over 300bhp at the flywheel and fully tuned by WGT.
Plus I\'m only in Newport :-)

Twins are the best for a smooth drive and good low down torque and they have instant acceleration.

With some single turbos your waiting for them to spool up and if you wanted to accelerate at a half decent pace while your pootling about in a single turbo rex you would have to knock it down a gear. I would probably find that a bit annoying. Although you wouldnt have a big problem with this if it had a smaller size turbo.

However if you wanted a seriously fun RX7 id say that uprated twins are the best such as the knightsports or the BNR\'s. ive driven one on uprated twins and it was good stuff.

I never seen any boost issues with mine, and as i use mine as a weekend toy it never gets boring for me to warrant spending a grand or two on a single conversion. Even as stock the Rx7 is a really fast car.

You best off taking both types out for a drive, and reading up in the FAQ section on this here site.

test drive both and decide what feels better for you. ih had both and i personally think that the singles are more fun. also i have found it more fuel efficient ( if you drive carefully) - as the turbo doesnt kick in until 4500 .  im not sure how having a single effects reliability though........... i am on my 3rd engine in a year!!!!

Owned both now.

Even on a T51 i get better mpg and on mine its a lot smoother boost over 3k and a lot nicer to drive

Stocks are good for instant power but only power up to 7k ish as per a single on mine where i can take the boost till 8200.

In my experience of owning both the single turbo causes me less hassle than twins as if something does go wrong its easier to work out to get to the bottom of the problem.

I agree with the others though better supporting mods and a good map will see an engine of any spec last just as long as twins
