I have done a little research (yes I know a little knowledge is a dangerous thing) and from what I can see the standard FD wheels are very good compared to most other wheels out there. http://www.wheelweights.net/
They are 8†wind and only weigh 7kg each. :eek
So what do the FD experts think? How much would I have to spend to improve the looks while keeping the drive as good as it is now?
that is a awesome website, great find
stock FD Type RS 17s. The best handling upgrade for an FD IMHO. If you want looks, then go for the stock RZ BBS 17s
Well on my second FD, I had 16s, and put decent 17s (split rim, sterns) and didnt really notice any worse handling.
My Latest FD had 18s, very hard ride, just put 17s (mazdaspeed so forged and very light) and the ride is TEN times better, as in even a bumpy road isnt too bad....I\'ll update on the handling when its not wet lol
I bought the rx7 mainly because of the way it drives (if i just wanted a pretty car i could have saved myself a few thousand).
I guess what I really want to know if my 9" 10.7kg super advan racing v2s will make the car worse to drive before i go to the rouble of reconditioning them?
No point putting on my new wheels if its like having the weight of a fat person in my car all the time...

:Hammer The RX7 is THE prettiest car ever! ! Plus it drives well :3gears-lh
I\'ve got 9" on the back of mine, dont notice a difference really, I\'d have thought 9s on the front may be a bit big, but then the FEED Racing RX7 has 9s all round.....
For every 1kg you add that is unsprung....it is equivalent to adding 8kg to the car.
These wheels of yours are 4.2kgs over the mag wheels we ran on our car last year. (up for sale too!!! ;) ) To save that equivalent weight you would have to strip almost 135kgs out of the car....thats the weight of 2 cute little girls!!
Jon what wheels do you run on your race car? and what size?? how do they compare to standard weight etc
i went from the standard wheels, the very light brittle ones to 18\'s, 8.5j front 9.5j rear and i have to say it made the car feel very different to drive, made the car feel heavier to drive and maybe lost a fraction on acceleration. I would say thou that the handling was improved.
The Mag wheels are made by Speedline Corsa.
They are a 17" rim and 8.5J front and rear. These will happily fit 235\'s on the front and 245\'s on the rear. Seemed to suit our car very nicely and good for a 8:17 round the ring!!
The thing about the lighter wheels is it will make the turn in a lot more positive, as well as giving you better acceleration and reduced braking distance.
They are worth their weight in gold....shame we are running a different wheel this year :(
Anyone know what the stock 17s (RS and BBS) weigh compared to the 16 stockers?
Thanks :)
Jon

I\'ve had a look in my FD and I can\'t find the 2 cute little girls, have mine been stripped out already?
ok so looks aside what are the best wheels to get for your FD to improve handling and performance, probably lightest you can find would be a good start, which size and width??
i take it really you would be looking at 16\'s or 17\'s.
what aftermarket wheels are there out there that will be the same or less weight then the standard rims??
i might contact rota and see if they can give me some weights of their rims
For the front why go any bigger than 8.5J on a 17"?
The rears are another matter....you can certainly go bigger there....but just increasing the width at the front is potentially going to lead to mid corner understeer...its all a balancing game. Too much on the front over the rear will lead to oversteer and the vv will lead to understeer
ive contacted rota to ask them how heavy my wheels are as its not listed on there website and isant on the wheelweights.net site either. Will be interested to see how heavy they are, they are bound to be heavier then the standard wheels but all depends how much
Most stuff that costs less than 400 a corner is likely to be significantly heavier than stock I think.
IIRC Rota\'s are around 9kg a wheel. Pretty good for a non-forged wheel, but not \'exactly\' light.

I think that hits the nail on the head. It will cost more than most are willing to spend to get a better dive and look better.
Although a bit of googleing would suggest that it the downsides are not as bad as suggested? And that the biggest issue is the ride quality..

So... For me i have the following to sets of wheels to choose from:
SUPER ADVAN 3 spoke 17" 10.7kg
new goodyear eagle f1 tires on them
9" wide
Standard wheels 16" 7kg
well used ventus tyres
8" wide
I think unless anyone wants to pay me oodles for the advans i will be using them.:driving
I\'ve got Volk Racing (Rays) three spokes 17\'s. I don\'t know the weight.
But the last time i took one off i remember thinking it was light.
Maybe someone could tell how much they weight. The closest i could find was some multi spokes 18\'s. At 7.5kg.
iv got racing beat split rims on the front 235 40 17 and one piece jobbys on the back 255 40 17 and its a million times better than the silly 16\'s in came one, and the bigger rears help it stop thinking its a drift car on track days, the whole car just feels safer and its more reasuring to push harder, my mates fd has got some 225 35 18\'s on and it drives like a sack of pants, serves him right for going to halfrauds for his wheels
