Title: What should the airpump do and when?
Post by: Nik da Greek on March 28, 2008, 06:52:46 PM
For those of you who\'ve managed to avoid reading my rant on another thread
http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=47968 (http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=47968)
(and I can\'t say I blame you for avoiding it!) I thought I\'d better post over here in the right section.

The problem is I just failed the MOT on my FD with emissions of 6.34 CO and 2109 HC, about twice the level allowed. The most obvious culprit would be the airpump, I thinks, but I\'ve no idea when the pump should actually run. It\'s one of those things I\'ve never paid any attention to, just cos I\'ve never had to. I\'m pretty sure it was working cos I had to do some mods to stop it mooing when I went to Apexi intakes.

Clearly, the belt runs all the time, and it has an electromagnetic clutch to engage the actual pump, yeah? The clutch pings in and out a bit when I turn the ignition on, so it clearly has power and the relay, I guess, must be working, but when should it engage when the engine\'s running, cos it doesn\'t seem to? Is it a rev-related thing, or what? How can I test it any further?

Help? Or am I barking up the wrong tree, should I be looking at Oxygen sensors or something instead?

The air pump should run permenantly untill the engine crosses 3000rpm then the clutch disengages & the pump shuts down from 3000 round to red line!!

Aha! an answer at last! Thanks, dude. I think someone said that over on the other thread mentioned above, but it\'s nice to have it confirmed. It definitely looks like the airpump ain\'t working then. Any ideas as to whether that\'d be the clutch thats gone and if so, if it can be fixed, gratefully recieved! Or do I just need to replace the whole pump?
