Title: There are times...
Post by: Nik da Greek on March 27, 2008, 10:16:26 PM
...when I f*****g hate this car!

Looks like my usual luck has remained consistent over the past month. So far I\'ve been heinously ripped off on eBay, spent ages faffing about installing a water temp gauge that worked for a whole day before shorting out and going phut, bought a boost gauge that had been mullered by the postie so the light didn\'t work and then it filled up with condensation in the glass, and spent the best part of a grand getting various fluid leaks and dodgy bits put right.

I was particularly chuffed, then, to finally get a chance to drive her in the sun after seven days straight of ten hour shifts, five in the morning starts (which was nice!) to find my beautiful wheels that I had refurbished at astronomical cost and have only been on the car two months have gone from looking like this;

To looking like this:

There\'s all manner of road grime, water and corrosion between the lacquer and the alloy rims. In some places you can move the bubbles of water around with your finger under the lacquer, it\'s lifting away in an entire sheet in places. Looks like the people that refurbished them didn\'t hold the bolt heads steady enough when they were tightened, and they were allowed to twist slightly, thus torquing the lacquer and lifting it from the rim.

Needless to say, I no longer have alternative wheels to put on the car, so even if (when) they agree to re-finish them, I can\'t take the wheels off, they\'ll have to have the car for as long as it takes.

Oh, well, nothing I can do about it whilst I wait to hear back from them, I thought, I\'ll take her for a good blast cos it\'s the MOT Friday; blow out all the cobwebs and soot. Especially pleased to see it\'ll only boost to .5 bar (on my daylight only, condensated boost gauge!) and the second turbo doesn\'t seem to do much. And there\'s a horrible escaping air noise when you try to force it. And it goes "PHWOOOOOoooooooshhh, shhh, shh in a decidedly worrying fashion when you lift off. Yes, it\'s ate a solenoid for the turbo switch over gubbins! Fantastic. Now a single, but not in a good way.

Good. Look forward to seeing how catastrophically the evil bitch fails the MOT tomorrow, then

This f******g car would test the patience of Job! My mate mentioned at work today that he\'s flogging his Mustang GT, and I am sooooo f******g tempted. At the moment, even a f******g Micra seems tempting, though!

Anyone got a match for a petrol tank?

You get what you paid for, buying parts off ebay........

They are cheap for a reason//

Yeah, thanks for that, that was very helpful. As it happens, I got ripped off selling stuff rather than buying, but there you go. The boost gauge was admittedly an ebay purchase, but you can\'t really legislate for post monkeys crushing delicate parcels, that could have happened wherever it\'d come from. The water temp gauge came direct from Japan from an apparently legit trader. Both were GReddy, so hardly cheap sh!te, you would hope.

Strange philosophy, there, though; people deserve to be ripped off if they try to save themselves some money by buying premium parts at a cheaper price?

I paid over 800 quid including labour for the wheels to be refurbished. Does that entitle me to feel aggreived, or is that still too cheap for ya?

Thanks for the encouragement, \'loper, though I\'m gutted you sold that Apexi bumper I\'ve been coveting so long just before I get paid! Probably just as well, looks like I\'ll be needing all my cash for engine work (again!)

Yeah, but at least yours is a piece of art so it\'s nice to look at! whereas mine still looks like a bag of sh!t tied up in the middle and dragged out of a swamp! Only time the bloody thing\'s run right was when it put me sideways through some Armco! Ahh, sod it, I\'m gonna get the bike out and set a new Sussex land speed record. Should make me feel better!

Maybe the car\'ll start to behave a bit when she sees the Kwaka getting all the love for a change!

borrow a set of wheels off som1 on here and try to be patient as best you can. although that does sound cowboyesque.

your boost probs may just be a spark plug or check valve so dont fret too much. despite what you have said i have without doubt been through worse in mine but on the other side it is green.

best of luck mate.

Cheers, but definitely seems to be a solenoid thats burnt out. Managed to get Jason from Super 7 to offer an expert diagnosis on it! I\'m clueless when it comes to diagnosing problems, so though it best to ask someone who knows what they\'re doing. I though I\'d done it some serious damage, the noises it was making, but it turned out it was from the primary turbo wasting all its boost into the secondary when it tried to switch over but couldn\'t.

As for the wheels, well you wouldn\'t believe it if I told you where they were done. I can\'t really say, cos they haven\'t had a fair chance to make them good yet, so it wouldn\'t be fair to bad-mouth them, but it\'s fair to say they\'re one of the most famous tuners in the country, though not of RX\'s. Hopefully they\'ll stand by the work and make good the repair, and then I\'ll be happy to sing their praises, after all, the wheels looked fantastic, for a whlle. I now know why most re-finishers won\'t touch split rims with a bargepole, though

Post by: m4drx on March 27, 2008, 11:08:15 PM
ok well there are a number of things you can check or you can get (i have some) solenoids if you need any. if it still works i very much doubt you\'ve done damage. its been running less boost so probably lessened stress on the motor if anything.

get your £££ from the postman too!

Well, I am sorry if that came aross the wrong way... just saying that you take the risk when you to buy cheaper parts from ebay, there are a lot of dishonest scammers about taking advantage.

I have learned my lessons from before.. and I am sure so will you ....

Good luck with the car anyway.... I am sure it will be all worth it in the end.

Damn, sorry to hear of your bad luck... I\'d be tempted to go single turbo (in the good way :D) if I was you. Screw all those flaky old solenoids. Everytime something goes wrong its just a chance to improve it, its going to be off the road and you\'re going to be paying money anyway :)

I\'ve got a pair of super advans you can borrow (yes a pair, as opposed to 4) & a spare wheel, + your spare wheel = 4 wheels :Giggle
Welcome to em dude before they go up egay...

Post by: SiH on March 28, 2008, 08:09:23 AM
Gutting :(
Unfortunately that almost alwyas seems to be the case with lacquering polished lips - they either peel and lift, or the lacquer yellows - the problem is there\'s nothing for the lacquer to stick to if the surface is well polished, and if it\'s rough enough for the lacquer to key to, then the finish isn\'t very bright :(

For that reason i tend to leave wheels bare and just get used to polishing them ever week.

Not much help I know though, sorry dude :(

God lord im glad i was not the only one the amount of times ive been cursing my car while trying to chase ghosts in the system! i\'ve spent so much time with my head under the bonnet trying to find intermitant problems and resolve them (usualy they fix themselfs when i come to repair them) i can finaly see a light at the end of the tunnel now and my enthusiasm for the car has hit a high again!

If you need some checkvalves / solenoids i have some spare but id recomend buying a set of the viton ones from the states (only a few dollah!):Thumbs-up and spending a weekend playing the rats nest game (its all good fun)

Stick with it, when it all comes together you get a great feeling of success and acomplishment.:Laugh

Thanks for all the words of encouragement there, guys! I know even in the darkest hours with these bloody things there\'s a little bit of you that says "remeber how good it is when it\'s all running right" and that\'s what keeps me going with it. The reason all this has p!ssed me off so much is that I thought the engine work I had done was the last bit that HAD to be done, and after three years I could at last start doing the stuff I WANTED to do, cos there\'s a big difference there! It appears not.

My own fault really for starting with a dreadful car in the first place, it was a real wreck but came with a £5600 engine from Rotechnics that was only 15000 miles old (I\'ve got the previous owners bills for that, he must\'ve been happy!), so I\'ve always kinda thought I\'d bought a sound engine with a free car thrown in. When I wrote it off and transsferred the motor into a blown car, I thought it might all be good, but the new one seems just as cursed as the old one! And now the engine\'s started going weird as well, that was the only good bit up till now.

Oh, well, I\'ll just plod on, I suppose. The cursed thing\'s probably cost me something like 20 grand by now, so it\'s not like I can afford to get rid of it, but it\'s depressing when I think what I coulda bought instead for the money it\'s cost.

Aceman, thanks for your very kind offer, I may need to take you up on it one day (if they ever get back to me). I\'ve got the original wheels, but they\'re not much use without tyres!

SiH, you\'re right about the polished rims, I\'d rather they\'d have just left them bare so at least I could take a bit of Autosol to the damn things. The tuning firm I took them to just took them aopart and put them back together, which was the part that worried me, they outsourced the refiniching to a "proffessional" wheel firm, which makes the finish even worse when you think that\'s all they have to do all day. If it was just the polishing, I\'d have done it myself, but I didn\'t want to risk getting ovel wheels from bolting them up wrong.

\'Loper, no, it\'s only a baby 636, bought it more for the handling than the engine. I had a 2002 \'Blade before, and I know what you mean, how can Honda make something so unholy fast feel soooo boring!

JP825, my fault, no need to apologise, it does sound like I bit slightly there! It\'s been a bad month, sorry. You\'re right, and eBay is a den of thieves at times, but when you\'re buying brand names from reputable sellers it should be no more dodgy than any other internet source. Should be, but it don\'t always work!
Title: There are times...
Post by: SiH on March 28, 2008, 12:33:06 PM
Do the rims yourself  I\'ve done plenty of sets and never had any problem with ovbalising - it\'s nowehere near as bad as people seem to think it is :)
No point telling you that though, as they should be sorting it for you. If in doubt, get them to strip and reploish them with no lacquer - it is hard work keeping them clean, but it\'s worth it - the finish is brighter than when they are lacquered as well :) Belgom Alu will keep them in lovely condition and cut down on the polishing intervals :) If you need any more advice about that let me know :)

I\'ve got a spare Viton check valve sitting around if you need it :)

Post by: Nik da Greek on March 28, 2008, 03:18:09 PM
Well, that\'s that then! Surprisingly, or rather, not, it just failed the MOT anyway. The eBaytastic bug eye chav lights failed for no beam pattern, which I kinda suspected they might. No big deal there, I can easily go back to pop-ups, with the bonus of not having to take any more grief about my sh!t eBay purchases, lol! :Tongue1

CO of 6.34% and HC at 2109 parts per might be slightly more of a problem, though. That\'ll be, like double the limit on both, more or less, then. Deep ******G joy. What\'s gone wrong there, then? Is it the airpump that\'s given up? Oxygen sensor? Cat? All of the above?

Having found all that, the tester then obviously thought he may as well have a field day and put in another fail because the coilsprings are loose when you stick the car in the air and let the wheels hang. Yeah, cos I spend a lot of the time airborne, don\'t I? They\'re horrible jap-spec GET coilovers that are bone-breakingly hard, and I\'ve always wanted to replace them and never had the money, now I REALLY hate them! Any answers to that one? Wind them up so tight there\'s no way the springs can unseat themselves, and take all the travel out?

Also got an advisory on the engine being "smoky" and the exhaust "noisy". Yeah, like I *******g care about that, then. Rear brake pads worn, too, which is fair enough, but I guess I won\'t really need brakes for a while on a car that ain\'t going anywhere in the forseeable future.

Did I mention that I ******g hate this ******g car, it\'s only ever been an utter ******g ***t and no matter how much money and time I ******g throw at it, it\'s still only a ******g bag of ***t, the ************g ***t!
(Thought I\'d better censor this post myself to stop some poor Mod going old and grey bleeping out all the ****s!)

Right, we\'ll start the bidding at £50 then! If anyone wants to make me a SENSIBLE offer and turn up with a trailer, it\'s theirs! I\'m serious. I\'ve had enough of trying to turn a sows ear into a silk purse and only ending up with a baggy wizard\'s sleeve (to mix metaphors a bit!).

yeah but once you sorted the car out then you wont be feeling this way will you?!

thing i would do is list all the various points / problems and then identify which parts you need.

I got a mate up here who has broke like three rex\'s and might be able to help you out with lots of parts. so dont sweat it too much mate. at least the engine isnt blown!?

Yeah, tyres are useful...

I only kept them for if I have issues with the MOT (One of my wheels is a little, well, bent thanks to pot holes and although most MOT stations pass it, I have had one fail the car on it before) so they should have road legals on them..

I had the lights problem too, I stuck aluminium tape on them and made the right pattern. Maybe the MOT man took pity on me, but it made it!

So, we reckon the airpump\'s the culprit, do we? Gotta be honest, I\'ve never paid it any mind before, cos I\'ve never had to, so I\'m not really sure how it should work. When I turn the ignition on, the clutch fires in and out slightly, so it\'s obviously got power ok, but it doesn\'t seem to do owt when the engine\'s running. Presumably it shouldn\'t run permanently, otherwise it wouldn\'t need a clutch at all, but when and why should it engage? Is it rev-related or what?

Feelin\' your pain mate...I know what it\'s like to sink a lot of money into a rex only to be slapped in the face - at least you\'ve still got your sense of humour (couldn\'t help but laugh at your own posts). Keep your chin up, deep breaths, count to 10 and all that...is there anyone near you who knows their way round a rotary who can help diagnose your problems?
Title: There are times...
Post by: leon on March 29, 2008, 02:32:22 AM
The air pump has a magnetic clutch in it, during idle from my understanding it will be engaged and you can see the inside wheel spin, its job is to push\'s extra air into the cat to help it do its job correctly, Once you hit around 1.5k (dont quote me ive been drinking) it shuts off and will spin freely, there is a grey electric connector ontop of the airpump that controlls its power.

I guess if your airpump isnt working that might also explain why you get a smokey car too.

these cars will make u skint and put u in an early grave as well i honestly can say i wish i had never purchased one..i have spent a huge amount on mine and really wish i had purchased a tvr or supra..prob the tvr as body and styling wise they need nothing ..ok the engine can be tempramental but the rx7 is hardly a paragon of effiecency and reliability is it

Okay, so why isn\'t my airpump working? Like I said, the clutch seems to pop in and out slightly when the ignition goes on, but doesn\'t seem to engage once the engines running. What\'s going wrong? Can it be fixed? Or do I just need an entire replacement pump?

rx7veilside, I know exactly what you mean. After three years of just throwing money into this and the previous RX, it\'s really getting to the point where the good times when it\'s all running as it should just don\'t make up for all the times like this, when it JUST SIMPLY DOESNT BLOODY WORK for no good reason. It\'s a beautiful car with a great engine. When it works. It used to give me a thrill of anticipation every time I went into the garage and saw it, but now I just wonder if it\'ll get me to work without breaking down. If I could get just a fraction of what I\'ve paid into it back out, I\'d walk away right now and never look back once. I\'ve never had such an unreliable piece of sh!t in my entire life, and that includes £200 Fiat 127s!

As much as youd walk away you would soon get bored. These cars are somthing special and as a friend said they are definatly an enthusiasts one. I\'m already dreading the sale i will have to potentialy go through when i buy a house :(

Rotaryguru: Your right :o

I dont think there is much you can check with the airpump other than it has the power connected, usualy you can hear and see it click in and out when your under the bonnet and rev the engine.

The good thing is airpumps should be EVERYWHERE! and cheap to  get too as people often take them off their cars.

Yeah, it\'s weird! I spent about two hours wading through thread after thread via the search function last night (most of which just randomly contained the words "air" and "pump" in totally separate contexts three pages apart, grrr!). Many, many threads about what to do when you delete the airpump. None at all about how to fix/test one, though. Am I the only muppet who still has one of the damn things? Particularly ironic that it doesn\'t work, then!

You\'re all right, of course, I don\'t really want rid of it, I just want it to work! I know I\'d always regret it if I did have to let it go. And I know it\'s a performance car, and an old one at that, and things go wrong, but honestly this particular one has a curse from Satan himself on it!

Don\'t envy you trying to get on the property ladder just now, dude, especially if you have to flog your pride and joy to do it. House prices are just stupid atm.

have you thought about deleting the air pump Nik? and maybe taking it to an MOT test who...knows how to set thecar up so that itll pass emmissions?.... :D
Maybe your mot tested equipment is "faulty"? :D
Title: There are times...
Post by: Nik da Greek on March 29, 2008, 12:23:56 PM
Dunno that even the tamest of MOT testers would be willing to ignore double the limit on emissions, dude. Hard to set it up when it\'s on the standard ecu. I don\'t know where I\'d be able to get much adjustability to the mixture without a programmable ecu to furkle with. Unless anyone knows better?

Just come in from the garage after getting halfway through putting the pop-ups back in (one done). Damn, if it ain\'t a lot harder than takin\' them out! They obviously adjust through three planes, so getting them to sit back in the right place is certainly a lot less fun than ******g a monkey! I\'m actually quite liking the look again, though. Never did like the bugeye ebaytastic lights so much on the red FD, they blended in a lot better on the Montego blue one. So it\'s not all bad news! See, optimism!

Get your airpump running right and id say push some injector cleaner through as well, oh and give it a good run there are some threads from people on tips on how to get the car through the test emmisions wise. i run a knight sports ecu and it ran pig ritch at idle so if i can get through with that yous hould with standard. :wiggle

Thanks again, guys, for all the words of wisdom. I still don\'t understand why the airpump won\'t run. The fuse is intact (I understand it\'s on the same one as the aircon) the relay clearly works cos the clutch fires on the ignition, it just won\'t run when the engines running. No comprende, how can this be?

Leon, the car\'s a \'92. Can\'t give it a run. No MOT. Had a wek left to run, in the old days that\'d have been ok cos I could\'ve blagged it witht the old certificate if I was pulled, but it\'s all centralised on computer now. All a rozzer\'s got to do is put my reg number into his black box and I\'m bang to rights, and a lot poorer! I can only drive it to a pre-arranged MOT retest. The way my luck\'s been I don\'t dare risk anything else!

SiH, thanks for the offer, chap. I\'m going to try to get my tame mechanic to have a look at it on Monday, cos it\'s obvious I\'ve no clue what to do next. If it turns out the pump\'s knackered, I\'ll take you up on that kind offer.

Plus point, at least I\'ve refitted the pop-ups and re-wired them ok. The wiring hasn\'t caught fire yet, so hopefully job\'s a good one. Not so chuffed about the chip of paint one took out of the bonnet when I tried the motor before aligning the headlight cage properly. Doh! Never thought the motor\'d have that much clout!

Next job is to wind up the coilovers so \'kin tight there\'s no way the springs\'ll move when the tester bas!ard waggles them. Should be a nice comfy ride quality like that!

Bit of an update to my tale of woe! I managed to convince my mechanic to have a go at getting the car through the MOT whatever it took (ie bodge it!) cos at least then I could use it and it\'d give me the luxury of time to get it sorted properly.

He is an exceptional mechanic, utterly concientious and does fantastic work, but unfortunately, not an RX7 expert, which is a shame. It means he doesn\'t have the right data to work from, which makes everything more tricky. However, he got the airpump working. It turns out that the driver for it in the ECU has burnt out (apparently this is fairly common, weird, I thought I was the only one who still had a $%*!ing airpump). You can basically frig the pump to run permanently by grounding it out (which is all the ECU driver does anyway) which obviously would be a very bad idea for regular use, but sufficient to get two miles up the road and through an MOT retest.

Well, it still put out well over 4% CO, which made the whole exercise rather bloody redundant. On further investigation, the Lambda sensor says the car\'s running well rich, which it clearly is (rather than the O2 sensor being duff, that is). Arse!

I\'ve had enough of titting about trying to wallpaper over the cracks, so it\'s gone back to Super 7. I\'m going to do what I should have done long ago, which is get an Apexi ECU put in it and map the bloody thing properly so it should never be an issue again. Ha! We\'ll see about that!

The other good news is that the firm that "refurbished" my wheels have grudgingly agreed to get them sorted, so hopefully that\'s one less thing to worry about. And it\'s not like I need wheels when I can\'t drive the car anyway! Now all I need is to find an insurance company who don\'t feel justified in raising my premium by over £200 above what it was last year for no reason whatsoever, and I might just start feeling positive about Satan\'s RX-7 again!

Hurrah! Progress is made! We now have an MOT. I thought long and hard about driving a car without an MOT on it, and then thought "well, it\'s never going to get fixed sat on my driveway, and it\'ll never pass an MOT unless it gets fixed, so **** it" and drove it up to Super 7 for a bit of tough love. Maybe I should have hired a trailer or something, but maybe the Government can **** off with their bloody totalitarian laws. What\'s a guy to do?

So, one Apexi Power Fc later and a bit of tweaking with the fueling, and the emissions are magically reduced a hundred-fold. It helped that the airpump burst into life as soon as the new ECU went in, which at least confirmed Jasons\' diagnosis that the driver for it was fubar in the original ECU.

I\'d already changed back to the original pop-ups, so the lights were no longer a problem. The suspension: well, the testers opinion was basically that if you have fully adjustable suspension, then there has to be a bit of movement in the spring in order to be able to adjust it. He didn\'t seem to think the springs were about to leap out of their mounts at the first dip in the road like the arse who failed it originally, so gave her a pass! Hurrah!

Only problem is, despite changing all the likely solenoids, the second turbo still doesn\'t seem to want to work, which is really annoying. And a little baffling! I\'m sure Jason\'ll get it sorted, he tends to be pretty good with diagnosing erratic faults like that, or at least he always has done in the past. Fingers crossed, then.

I also managed to get a second set of wheels with useable tyres to keep my brake discs off the floor while I get the Volks re-re-furbished! (Thanks to Atomic Rex, cheers, guys) Took them up to the company who did them the first time for a second go, but at least they\'ve agreed to do them out of goodwill (so they should, mind!). After much discussion, it was decided that the problem was the edge of the rim part is too sharp a line for the laqcuer to adhere to, especiallly when the laqcuer is as thick as it is. Thus, the problem will just re-occur if they\'re re-finished as they are.

So, I\'m going to have the rim done in the anthracite colour, too, so they\'re all the one colour. Should look mean and moody, I think dark wheels really suit red cars, anyway, so I\'m not too despondant about losing the shiny rims. I think I\'ll add a red pinstripe round the very edge, just to key them into the car. The other plus point is that I now have a spare set of wheels, so that I can use them in the depths of winter, cos they\'re pretty scabby anyway, and keep the Volks for the nice weather, so the problem should never happen again.

Really, REALLY want the car back now. Didn\'t think I\'d miss her, especially considering how p!ssed off I was when I started this thread, but I really have, weird. Doesn\'t help that it\'s like a monsoon outside, and I\'ve got to ride the bike to work in it and then work a ten hour shift with wet feet! I want transport with a roof and a heater!

I noticed that since the server move, none of my photos seem to come out, oddly. I\'ve tried adding one of the state of the wheels now so people know what I\'m wittering on about without going right back to the start of the thread, but that doesn\'t seem to have worked either. Mods! Help?
