Title: DVLA Type approval for KMH???
Post by: Rotaryguru on March 26, 2008, 03:41:03 PM
I really can\'t believe it... my registration was denied by the DVLA, on my 1992 - because the speedo is in KMH!!!

We all know that this is untrue. The are saying it has to do with Type Approval..... but its over 10 years old.

What can I do? I am sick of all this red tape!!!:2Mad :Grrr :reallymad

Just inform them you have got a kmh to mph clock conversion, only about £35 quid from ebay

Hmmmm maybe, they said they wanted a receipt from a garage that a MPH speedo had been fitted, or inspect the car if I put one in myself.

What a joke.   :2Mad

Just take it to another DVLA office, the DVLA is very inconsistent and your reason for refusal is complete rubbish.

Considering you dont need the car to be in mph for the MOT test then that is complete an utter ********.

Take your papers to the Preston DVLA office.  They arent arsed in the slightest as long as your money is good.

I can\'t go into an office, I\'m an IT contractor - if I\'m not at work, I don\'t get paid. They\'re open 9-5 M-F, I work 8-8, M-F.  :( :(

I said about the Speedo passing the MOT, you know the answer I got???

\'Computer says no......\'  :2Rolleyes

Yeah, I posted the last lot, and am still waiting for the docs to be returned....

I\'m trying to get it on the road before April 12th (the car arrived 27th Dec - i\'ve been dealing with red tape since then!!!), I want to go out to the Old School Mazda meet in Dummer.

Latest rule to be implemented, if you go elsewhere you\'ll get the same response. Easiest thing is to pay a few quid and get a speedo chip fitted and then send the invoice for the chip being fitted with the rest of your docs and that will be enough.

Really? You know this for sure? Otherwise I\'ll be sending my documents off for no reason, and I need to get this done.

You\'re right, my other option was simply to get an aftermarket one fitted. Not even on the dash, just stuck in front of speedo, cheap as! The said I\'ll have to have an invoice from a garage to prove it was done.

This is what I am really F**KED off about. If they had it on the F**KING list of requirements, then I would have done it, no probs. But they don\'t, I have provided every little scrap of paper they have asked for in the requirements to register a vehicle. Its written somewhere obscure in one of their little booklets, and now I have to wait even longer!!

when i had mine sva tested all they reqd was it to read mph so put a sticker over it and it failed due to kmh shining through sticker-how picky!!!!
was told to black out the k giving you mh and it passed the sva no probs then.

Not applicable to this situation though as his doesnt require sva test.  Only MOT test which doesnt require the speedo to read in mph.

One last question, should I have got my Japanese Deregistration doc back, or does the DVLA keep these?

Congratulations mate!

You should get back the English translation of the Japanese De-reg.  The DVLA are meant to keep the actual Japanese De-reg.
