Title: hello from possible new owner!
Post by: billy on March 04, 2004, 10:14:06 PM
hi all,

so hear\'s my story...

i\'m currently driving a slightly modified civic type-r (2002) - will have had this (from new) for two years come May 2004. top car, would highly recommend it to anyone considering this type of car.

two years is basically my "itchy feet" period of time with a car - even though the ctr is a great car and i promised myself i would manage at least three years with it i just don\'t think i\'ll be able to last... man has to have a little bit o\' variety...

anyway, for my next car i knew i definitely wanted rwd, more power, dedicated sports car, possibly a roadster, has to be realatively rare (unlike my ctr now - though it used to be until honda changed their mind over the definition of limited numbers!) probably buy from new...

thought about...

350Z - bit too too pricey and not convinced with the looks...

S2000 - basically got everything i want but a bit too small for me (6ft 3" tall and not excactly petit build)

RX8 - his was almost the winner - but reading the RX8 forum it has put me off of it with some of the issues folk are having with them (oil, fuel, flooding) - also not 100% sure about the looks...

thing is i do fancy a bit of rotary action + rwd - so that has led me here to the 3rd gen RX-7!

always loved these cars and reckon it could give me everything i\'m looking for for my next car...

so even though they aren\'t available new i fancy looking into getting one sometime later this year - as an introduction to rwd + rotary power and a possible stepping stone to the new RX-7 if it comes out around 2006 if rumours are to be believed...

so there you go - that\'s my story....

any advice on what to buy etc would be much appreciated as i\'m a bit of an RX novice....

though from a quick browse about here it seems that a good choice would be an RS model from 1999 onwards?

cheers,
billy

you may want to try sitting in a RX7 thou as the Jap ones with standard big steering wheels can be a little compact but this is easily overcome from my 6"1 experiance so dont be too put off by even that but as the saying goes suck it & see lol

If your tall you will need a smaller steering wheel and probably a mod to the seat runner to give you more room, but boy its worth it. I am 6\'4" tall and a big bast*rd and I can just about squeeze into one. Awesome cars, only one problem - fuel consumption coming from an econimal CTR will be a total shock, look forward to double to triple the fuel bills... ....but probably the greatest sports car to ever come out of Japan IMHO.

I made the jump from CTR to RX-7. As an out and out sports car rather than a hotted up hatch it feels completely different. Just wait til you\'ve been on a test drive - you\'ll be hooked!

Hi Billy
If you fancy trying an FD for size you are more than welcome. Dare say I will see you at a meet or something. And hopefully next time "I\'m going to pulverize you in such an unsafe manner, your screams will shatter lightbulbs world-wide!!" :D

I think I got about 280 miles from £40ish in the CTR. I now get 210 from £48 or so in my RX-7 - which is standard apart from the exhaust.

It\'s a price worth paying IMO, as i spent money modding the CTR which ended up being better spent on a faster car in the first place.

Im not sure an RX7 is faster than a CTR.  Ive been round Brands at the same time as a couple of them, and they were quick.  I was probably slightly quicker but not by much.

It is a tight track though, if we were somewhere with a longer straight they would of lost loads of ground.  It could also be I just wasnt driving as well as them.

I have seen a few Jap vids though with stock CTR\'s beating Stock S2000\'s on track.  They cant be that slow.

Dont want a Civic though myself.

hmmm.... i get around 210/220 just now from a full tank of optimax (£35 ish - I never drive it too far past the time when light comes on...)...

most of my midweek driving is short journeys, lot\'s of traffic lights - not good for fuel economy!

still, can\'t let that stop you from enjoying your car - you pays your money you takes your choice eh!

hi,

you\'re right, ctr\'s are not slow - but i would have expected an RX-7 to be a good bit faster in general...

a lot depends on how you drive i guess - and the RX-7 is just a totally different prospect though isn\'t it? completely different type of car - would expect an RX-7 to give a ctr a good thrashing though if driven with some welly - plus the RX-7 can be tweaked to a far higher degree than the ctr with some mods i guess...

ctr is great for what it is but RX-7 (like an S2000) is a true sports car i reckon...

Of course.  Just thought Id say that seeing your avatar is a picture from a track.  It will be a completely different experience and the RX7 will have more potential, but in terms of speed round a track you may find them pretty close.

My Mate has a 2002 CTR.
He lives in Wallington up the road from me so he is my beating stick but as you say that\'s on the straights. On a track is a different story but I have loads of vids of jap cars racing etc all lent out mind, and I don\'t think the average driver is good enough to get the best out of an rx7 on the track. It\'s the kind of car to fufill it\'s potential on a track would need a good experienced driver. Suspension being setup/aligned properly in the first place makes a tremendous difference in a rx7 compared to any other car I know, being fully adjustable in so many different points the alignment can get knocked out so easily.
the CTR are nice though but not enough poke for my liking.

It\'s more than just speed and times though - it\'s the experience.

The CTR has a classic case of the feeling sitting on and not in.

ah, i see what you\'re saying now - the pic was me at knockhill - top day out last june!

was 2 or 3 RX-7s there that day giving it large.

one guy who i\'ve known for a few years was there and i took him out in my ctr - can\'t remember his name - lives in glasgow (possibly bishopbriggs area) - has a red RX7 i think... probably comes on here...
