Seems it had a V8 fitted that went pop, so all the hard work is done?
just drop in another engine?
A stock rover 3.5l is about 200 hp i think? so it\'s not gonna be super quick! but they do sound nice!!!:yes

I\'m sure this was at the pod during retro show. Me and stu got chatting to the bloke. Was a seriously stock car apart from the engine.

your looking at around 160 - 200hp depending on what car the 3.5 comes from. The engine in my Stag puts out around 150 but its down on a cylinder and hasn\'t been touched since the 60\'s so its to be expected i guess.

Wasnt this the car that had a problem with the autobox too?

i used to own this car a long time ago and fitted the wheels and exhaust...to make it quick would need a decent engine as the last engine was 150hp from a rover p6...pony...and was pretty rusty back then...4 yrs ago...

Stock 3.5 v8\'s are approx 150bhp.
Rover v8\'s are very expensive to tune to decent power levels above 270 bhp.
I have a 4.2 rover v8 in a Dax Cobra approx 280 bhp,engine would cost nowadays about £5k.
5.7 chevy lumps much cheaper to tune up,but they weigh too much.
Worst power sappers on rover v8 are the heads.
Su carbs wont take much more grunt.
Add dished pistons,fast street camshaft,stage 2 heads & quad dellorto\'s & youre talking serious bucks,well over £5k & probably about max 320 bhp.
They sound great, but if i did it again i\'d go for a chevy LS6 or 7 all ali v8,there 400>500 bhp & more reliable & about the same price or less than a high output rover v8.

SU\'s are cr*p! well atleast mine are. I wanted to go down the single webber 500 mounted to an Edelbrock Manifold. I still want to but the Triumph has to go so i can focus on the EGI.

Anyway back on topic, i\'d be tempted to bolt in an Audi V8 high redline plenty of grunt and with the right exhaust a sound to die for.

Hehe Su carbs are crap.
What about Holley 390cfm on your edelbrock inlet manifold?
I think you can get a new holley for under £200 now, their easy to tune & parts ie jets are peanuts.

Why would someond downgrade a rotary with a lesser engine lol I mean its a Rotary eXperimental number 7 and not a V8X 7 is it? lol

Oh no now you\'ve done it!! haha
Holley 390 was/is a consideration as the Webber is flamin expensive. I need to get the car through an MoT before it goes to my dads place on the Isle of Wight, and im expecting her to cost me a tidy sum as the engine is running like a dog!! I think the carbs are in need of a rebuild (its been about 36 years) but i dont know where to get the kits from.

Mind once thats done and it\'s back with my dad then the fun begins!! tuning the engine and sorting the suspension out and i\'ll be swapping my EGI in the summer time for the Stag.

m1tch if you read Practical Performance Magazine you\'d understand. :Giggle

This week im mostly thinking about putting a Viper V10 into a Jeep Cherokee :mmmm
No wait GM already beat me to it... Oh well you get the idea :D

Try Rover Parts International for Su carb kit.
If you need Holley rebuild kit,Real Steel do them.
I love v8\'s & rotaries.
Main grumble i have with my standard 12a lump is it dosent really kick in until about 4000rpm,whereas my v8 starts pulling pretty strongly from 1500rpm.
Mind you if i revved the rover to 7000rpm,disintegration would be inevitable!!:3gears-lh

Excellent thanks for that i\'ll give them ago.

Im the same as you. I absolutely love V8\'s and my mate got me into the Rotaries.  I would like to use the Stag as a Cruiser and the FC as the sports car. I expect it\'s the reverse for you :Laugh

I\'ve been mostly thinking about putting an old BMW 2.5 6cyl turbo diesel into a scimitar ;)

If your rover v8 is standard its even easier for you,as 390 holley carbs come pre jetted from the factory, simple, bolt on & go.
Get vacuum secondaries
on the carb, not the double pumper version.
It took me a year messing round with carb jets trying to get the car running smoothly throughout the rev range!!!
If youve got some spare cash, get the heads done, performance exhaust manifolds & camshaft etc will make you fly:Thumbs-up
Or if you win the lottery a 5litre rover lump would be a lot of fun.
Also use a composite intake gasket when fitting edelbrock inlet manifold as the tin ones are useless.
Also renew the 2 rubber sealing strips at either end of the block.
Have fun!!:Thumbs-up

i\'m putting a chrysler 5.2 in my fc at the moment,i cant belive how easy it is to get it to fit the rx,i\'ve had to cut the transmition tunnel at the passanger side and have lowered the anti roll bar by half an inch.230 bhp standard with loads of tuneing goodies around, before all the rotary fans go mad with me can i say that the rotary was well and truly past it.cant wait to get it on the road.

the FC 13B is at like 230 as standard lol does a V8 rev to 12k when its race ready?

are you a complete donkey...eveyone has there own opinion, and you preach like the 13b is the only engine to ever have,if people had the same thoughts it would be a rather boring, the v8 is actually a good engine, very reliable and can be tuned for for far less than a rotary, sure there are rotarys out there that will be faster and produce more power...but on the whole its a personal taste thing...i had an fc with a rover v8 in it,sounded great but was seriously slow...i also built an fd with a 350 sbc engine which was very quick, again personal prefrence,i now have just built a supra mkiv with a 355 ali head chevy engine, with a t56 6 speed box...:)

and you would have to spend some serious cash to make any rotor wind up to 12k rpm ona regular basis.

Also try MG owners club for SU parts, you don\'t have to be a member.
On the V8 front I went down the Offey mani. and a 420 Holly.:Thumbs-up

I wish i had 230BHP from my FC but then again i don\'t live in BERKhampstead.

Standard is 197.26 bhp [taken from T11 sales brochure]

i wish my fc had 230 bhp too,it was a non turbo and put out 145 bhp,to get it to rev to 12k will cost about 12k too. v8\'s are cheap power with losts of torque and are reliable,my othe fc has the rotary engine still in it and its a tempremental heap of junk, cant wait to pull it out and fit a v8.does a v8 rev to 12k when its ready to race, yes, formula 1 18000 +,top fulel dragster around 12k then there are the bike engine derived v8s like the one in the radical sr8.....i\'ll stop there.

what about handling, can you notice the difference with a v8? (ive always wondered)
Title: Mmmm V8 FC !!
Post by: vinnythespud on April 07, 2008, 03:27:32 PM
i will notice with the chrysler engine because its all cast iron but the ls chevy engines are all alloy so dont make too much difference and a rover v8 is probably lighter than the rotary.

I think the other one you are all thinking off is this Egi based one which was at Jap Show Finale last November? Or are there even more spookily white V8 FC\'s out there? :2eek

Brett and I spoke to the owner for ages! It was a fun project car that they\'d bought - engine was running fine but the car couldn\'t be driven as they were having problems getting the gearbox to work!

This one was also up for sale some months ago on Ebay - so it would be interesting to know what\'s happened to it. Anyone recognise this one?

:)

Im unsure what to do when eventually my rotary blows up, a v8 transplant sounds cheap but is it compared to fitting a direct 13b swop jobbie??? whats the cost, and benifits of rotary v v8????? :wiggle
