Title: which IC would be suitable for my mods ?
Post by: michaelb on March 21, 2008, 04:14:05 PM
Hi All

Some of you know that I have had a full engine re-build done ONLY 200miles ago by Powergains Motor Sport. Still running it….

I am in the market for an IC unit and would like some advice which IC would be suitable for my mods, it needs to be:

1) Reliable
2) Would not cost an arm and a leg second hand
3) Look the business with hard pipes, I have a number of seriously shiny bits under the bonnet and would like something what looks good.  I have polished plenium, thermostat housing, water pump housing, boost pipe,

I have a 96 RB Bathurst still twin turbo and my mods are

De cat silenced mid pipe form dragon
HKS Super Dragger Exhaust
No Air Pump, Greddy pulleys
Apexi pfc
HKS Racing Suction Kit with hard pipes
Blitz BOV

Any recommendations? Pictures of your engine bay with the IC would be very welcome

Is any one selling something suitable?

Regards,
Michaelb

My Greddy would love great under your bonnet michael. I posted a for sale thread on here so i suppose it\'s still in the members section till next week. It\'s in great condition. A little dirty could do with a polish with some autosol, but it would mate upto a polished Y pipe niceley.I also have the stainless air duct that fixes to the front although this is not in the pics. Your\'s for £220 delivered. I bought this off jeff at hayward rotary last year for £300

Good intercooler that, needs some ducting to get the most from it but thats just more shiney stuff to go with it, fair price for it too.

Hello Robbie

Thanks for the reply and the offer

Let me ‘shop around a little’ before I commit my self to a unit.  TBH I am not in a rush as I have just coffed up for a re-build having set that do you have better pictures of your IC or any other pictures of that model?

Regards,
Michaelb

for what you have a large core stock mount, Greddy, ARC or Knightsports. Better cooling over stock but without the lag of a massive front mount. If your feeling very rich V-mount.

Cheers

I\'ve got the same intercooler as Robbie there, but branded Trust rather than GReddy (but obviously the exact same thing). I\'d recommend it without reservations, excellent bit of kit, if that\'s any help in making your decision. Just like allstaruk said, you need to make sure you get the ducting to it right, but it\'s fantastic quality, totally bombproof and avoids major hassle fitting a front or V-mount, which are possibly a bit overkill on a mild tune anyway. Polishes up lovely, too

Yeah, they\'re almost a direct replacement for the standard one, just a bit larger each way. Mine presses very close to the water pump/hose union, but has been fine for a year and a bit, not rubbed through anything yet! :chat . Making the ducting was a bit of a faff, but if you buy Robbies\' ready made one you\'d be spared that hassle. Managed to fit and/or make it all myself so it can\'t be too hard, cos I\'m a mechanical cretin!

Wasn\'t trying to steal a sale, btw, just to clear that up. I need mine to run the car still, I was just vouching for the one offered to you earlier!

No worries mate.

What is really the difference between larger and smaller intercoolers?  Is is the intake temperature?  Is there such a thing like a lag? Jm-garage.co.uk mentioned the above…

Lag tends to be a side effect of the length of pipework and how long it takes the turbos to pressurise it all as far as the throttles. Yeah, it keeps intake temps down, not as much as a front mount, but then they occlude the air flow to the water radiator, which on a Rex is what you don\'t want. V-mount is the best compromise, excellent short I/C pipe run for no lag and equal cooling for I/C and water rad, but cost a lot or and/or take loads of fitting
Title: which IC would be suitable for my mods ?
Post by: RobbieRX-7 on March 21, 2008, 06:38:56 PM
Yeah it\'s just the intake temperature basically. They all have their ups and downs be it front mount or standard mount.

Front mounts block air to the rad, so you\'ll need to get creative in ducting some air to the rad. This application is best for drag racing. They also have quite a bit more lag because of the length of piping needed and the size of the intercooler.

Standard mount suffer from heat soak from the rad so this is why you need ducting to it from the nose of the car directly to the intercooler. With this intercooler, you use your stock mazda ducting, just need to trim some off for this greddy to fit in.

V mount is the ultimate setup but costs a fortune and imo is not really worth the money.

This greddy is designed to just about fit inside the engine bay. It will fit in between the stock airbox and stock battery case

I guess it will be stock set up.  I have no stock air box, it has been removed.  I have the HKS Racing Suction Kit instead.  I have quite a lot of room now for a decent IC.

Thanks for the advice ….

Now is the question of shopping around for one and getting a good deal.  Since I had a re-build then I will run the engine in then I will fit the new IC and have it mapped by JayDee here in London.

Michaelb

At least i know what day it is ;)

OK, what you see is what you get. I asked WGT for the whole lot back and didn\'t get the top hard pipes, sorry. Also, mine was a standard radiator (as far as i know) but when i went to pick it all up he gave me this other one and said that one of this workers had accidentally fitted mine to another car and it had gone out (!). So he was giving me this better, uprated one (and you can see its more impressive than the standard one and built by someone specialist). It fits on standard mounts though, so ought not to be a problem. I wasn\'t over the moon about the whole situation (and accompanying story) to be honest, but i had a bigger turbo and shiny new front mount set-up and a car i hadn\'t seen for months so I didn\'t waste a great deal of time worrying about it.

Make me an offer. You pay postage. I am not a great one for putting things on eBay as i generally can\'t be bothered with the muppetry you come across. I\'d rather sell this to someone on the forum in a friendly manner.

cheers

Andy

Hi Papercup

You are right, half the time I don’t know what day it is LOL

Many thanks for your pictures, the IC looks great, but it looks like it is a front mount and at this stage I will probably go for a stock set up but TBH I will speak to Kerim at Powergains and get his advice.

I am running twin turbo set up and an IC like this might be a tad ott

yes, as the man said. Strictly speaking it isn\'t in the engine bay, its in front of the front panel, in the nose cone. See the last picture i put; you can\'t even see it, just the pipes that go to it.

Mine is a single, so when you go that way you know it will be fine.

Let me know what you decide.

Sorry, mini-hijack alert! Peter, those pipes come from an American firm, I\'m really sorry, I can\'t remember their name, I got them secondhand ages ago. Something very similar pops up on eBay from time to time, but I couldn\'t vouch for their fit. The bottom/front pipe on mine (the U-shaped one!) fit fine on the separate filters I had originally on my first rex, but would never quite line up with the intake from my ARC induction box I had subsequently, oddly. They were fine on the stock airbox, so maybe it was ARCs fault rather than the pipes!

And as for all you layabouts, by seven in the morning, I\'d been at work half a shift already! It was snowing just outside Brighton then, needed a bit more than a dressing gown! :)

FWIW, Ron Davies are renowned for making extremely high quality radiators. You will find them in all kinds of applications, they are also imported into Japan and used by some of the top RX7 tuning companies.

Sorry guys, been in Amsterdam for the week, working, so not been able to keep in touch very well. Rob M asked first, so he has first dibs. He also wants both the rad and the IC which is better for me.

Ed - if this falls through with Rob then we\'ll talk further.

Michaelb - random question about seats! Do you mean the seats in my car? How do you know what they are?

cheers all
