Title: Air filters (twin)
Post by: gsb876 on March 04, 2004, 08:40:19 PM
Do twin air filters (induction kits) produce more power than the single ones?

Currently have just a large single on the end of the turbo thinking of doing demon tweeks and fitting a double large cone unit any ideas?

Pics below of mine, sorry if its too large not sure how to compress?

Also will a twin fit? if anyone has any pics of a double unit please post so i can calculate possiblities?

Thanks in advance:

Forgot to add:

Can you get units to point in opposite directions as there wont be room to get two in the same way as the intercooler is quite close?

Seeing as you have the big single, getting twin filters would be poinltess really.  They would both go to the same place, so you wouldnt gain anything.

Would it be possible to get a bigger single filter? as the one i have looks quite dirty and old?

I think alot of people have said its better to get a new one rather than clean the older ones? is this true?

It looks like a HKS one, and if it is you can just buy replacement filter elements.

Lee\'s right, just get a HKS replacement. Most ther cone filters wont fit due to rad location.

Think the only way you could make the single better would be to get it a feed of cold air, i.e. relocating the filter  to a hole in the bonnet in the air flow, or a gap in the nose.  lot of work though for comparatively little gains.

Any HKS dealer should have them.  you just need to make sure you get the right size as they come in two different sizes.

Im not sure on price, probably around £20-25.  It was about £30 last time I got replacement filters, but you need two smaller ones for my set up and I think one bigger one is cheaper.

It is easy enough to cut the bigger one down to size with scissors. But I would imagine that it would be a bigger one you are after anyway. (matron :rollin )

At the mo the closest one to me is Scoobiworld in loughborough, who although cater for the obvious, will no doubt have something to fit a rx?

I may just get a new unit not sure yet, a nice crome one would be cool no?

But i\'ll see ya sunday Si, might go down to Scoobi world tomorrow as loughborough is like 10mins away.

Sadly they dont seem to have any HKS goodies thou (http://mysmilies.ipbfree.com/s/contrib/aahmed/sad.gif) & er i\'d be & am tempted to look around for best option/deal as P&P aint usually an issue but lettice no how you go.... Blitz chrome shiny bling bling types do look great & suck a load of air although it depends how badly you need clean air as well but it\'s better than no induction kit at all.....

If you arnt running the standard airbox, the Apexi is usually considered the way to go and is one of the cheaper options too.

I think the way its going might have to plan a trip to demon tweeks next wk-end Lee, as the ones i was looking at aren\'t fittable to the rx7???

So its a case of getting something that looks cool as well as being very efficent any ideas?
You mention Apexi any certain model?

I did see a Blitz sonic one for the rx7 on the web somewhere but cant remember the link:confused:  i think they\'ve only just arrived in the uk hence the price:eek:

If you have any numbers or contacts please advise, thanks:)

click here for a review of different induction kits (http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/filters_test/2/)  that link has been about for ages now so maybe out of date in terms of new models etc but still worth a  look & as Lee said apexi does come out rather well if yer buying new

Si,

Scoobyworld no good!!! muppets only cater for the obvious, thought they might do a few others but no!!:(

Wanted to get a filter/induction today but running outta time so not looking likely no real outlets around my city?

Had my filter off today and as Ross said earlier hardly any room at all to play with so god knows what we shall get???
I think the earlier remarks at getting a twin filter is a def NO!

I talk to you tomorrow Si/John, see what we come up with.

had this back from whifbitz which sounds promising
"The Apexi kit is great value for money, it is a twin kit yes, everything is
included to fit straight on. I can do a 10% discount on them if I can get an
order of 5 together....

HKS filters are about £14.50 for small or £17.95 for large plus VAT"

Hmmm looks like i\'ll do at the least the replacement filter thing maybe more if i can be seduced lol

Damn it i\'m already skint till June i will need some time to convince myself it\'s cheaper to buy a decent kit that lasts over a cheap replacement which doesn\'t. hmmmmm (Si gets his torture gear out to start his self convincing lol) Watch this space & i\'ll start a new thread at some point to guage interest....

well in the mean time i ordered the replacement spongy bits for my HKS from whifbitz & they turned up today, good service, & fitted in a flash ( & me a technical retard (http://mysmilies.ipbfree.com/s/contrib/geno/wink.gif) lol) & by heck it looks a hell of a lot better even if there are potentially better filters on the market. Will try & take some pikkies of the old vs new filter colours when i get my hands on the camera again but well quite a contrast (http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/contrib/corky/smilies25.gif) lol

In that little link about filters it says that the Apexi job is a bit good.  Almost coninved me away from the blitz I was thinking of.  Only thing is it says that it is lifetime use and no maintenance.  Does anyone know if this is true.  I had one on my MR2.  It was bloody good but I was of the opinion it would only last for about a year.  Couldn\'t tell for sure as instructions were all in Japanese.

Cheers

HI,
It is a known fact that our engines do not like heat and heat build up. Although more time consuming than just replacing the element, Have you considered relocating the filter away from the turbo and waterpump and sheilding it against the heat. This would be more effective, and your engine could run cooler and safer.
All the best,

John
