Post by: RobMatthews on March 15, 2008, 08:28:27 PM
Hey question to the people using cars on the track...

Which ones would you recomend? i dont really wanna be spending loads on slicks or anything like that so would a good set of toyos be good ?

I\'ll be racing on Toyo R888\'s, so I\'d say they are ok.

I will be changing to Toyo 888\'s as soon as I\'ve worn out the Dunlops I\'m running on my Track Rims.

Lots of Race/Track teams use them mate, they grip like baby poo to a blanket. ( But not in the wet :eek )  HTH.

I suppose it depends what type of track etc. - airfields will ruin tyres in one sitting, whereas on a proper track you\'ll get plenty out of decent road tyres (depending how much wheelspin you choose to administer! ;) )

I\'ve done three days at Donington (one wet) and a bit of handling instruction at Bruntingthorpe on mine, currently running Falken 452s on the rear and Pilot Sports on the front, there\'s still a good amount of tread left, at least another trackday if not two I\'d say. I do barely drive it on the roads though.

So, I would say any of the road tyres people recommend on here (e.g. Goodyear Eagle F1s) will be fine on track and obviously on the road, although they won\'t give you the kind of grip 888s do. In my eyes, that might make you a bit slower on track, but it\'s more useful when you\'re driving on the road, as you\'re operating in the same sort of limits, rather than putting less grippy tyres on to go home. Plus if it turns out wet, you\'re not on the back foot!

And as you say, you can\'t fit a spare set of wheels in the FD anyway...

T1r\'s are better than f1\'s in the dry and still hold well enough not to kill you in the wet. F1\'s make great road tyres as they very good wet or dry and last along time, i think t1rs are better for track days if you don\'t want to go r888\'s.

I\'m going to my first track day on the 5th at Bedford  errr. aerodrome... sounds like an airfield.

my brother is taking my RX-7 and I\'m going in my NSX.... would that be tires gone at the end of the day?
Upgrading brake pads and oil on the Honda... should I do same on RX?

Thanks.

Never been to Bedford, but it isn\'t it actually a proper tarmac track?

I wouldn\'t have thought you\'ll kill a set (pair?) of tyres in a day, unless they\'re down to say 3mm already.

Brakes depends on what you\'ve got in! Haven\'t had any experience of Mazda OEM brakes, so will have to leave it to someone else to comment. My guess is it would be useful to have something that can handle a decent temperature, so uprated pads and maybe fluid?

NSX eh? I contemplated ditching my DC5 and FD for one the other day during a time of much expenditure on the pair of them, but I couldn\'t afford a decent 3.2 or, even better, NSX-R! Maybe one day... but then the new GTR will probably be affordable on the secondhand market!

Bedford is a very well surfaced track - not an airfield surface at all. If you drive senssible the tyres will wear but should be ok. If you drive like I do at bedford then you\'ll need more tyres. I\'ve de-laminated two sets of rears at Bedford.
This is Bedford in my old MG ZT http://www.two-sixties.com/bedford1.htm

Are you saying F1 are better in the wet than T1Rs?

Need a set of road tyres for my second wheels which would also be used on a track day if it rained (I run R888s on the main set of wheels)

Choices are T1rs all round

or

F1 Asymmetric front (new version of F1)
F1 GSD3 rear (old version, cant get the new one in 255 yet)

Any opinions?

My 10p:
IME, F1\'s are brilliant on the road, really good alrounder tyre, that is nice and predicatable. However, on track, they very quickly melt and marble.
Toyo\'s are similar, a bit better on track but stilla bit melty.
Falken FK451\'s are a good compromise - goo don the road (although not as good as F1\'s) and good on track - still melted a bit, but not nearly as much as F1\'s. 452\'s are supposed to be a bit better for grip and last just as long :)

ive got toyo888\'s on mine there great in the dry but loose traction quite easy in the wet although not been on a track yet. having said that the thread is starting to get low but as there a semi slick they will always suffer a "tiny" bit in the wet lol but will definately be getting the same tires again

Or the Bridgestone RE01R, Brilliant on the road with excellent grip both in wet and dry, and alot of people are running them on Track cars when not wanting the S-tires like RE55S
