Hi all
I took my car to 180mph :Nono! the other day it ran fine and still had more to go, the boost was fine also and i have never had a boost problem in the past 1.5 years. the car ran fine on the way home too. The day after when i went for a drive and applying boost WOT it now doesnt hold at a constant .85 it goes .6 .7 .5 etc very erratically through the rev range. ive checked all my pipes and they seem ok. the vacuum holds a little less than it did at idle. it was at .5 now its a touch less.
What have i done? has anyone any ideas. im giving it a once over now hope i aint bust something expensive
unless you have a highly modded FD mate then its very unlikely you will hit 180mph, if you are getting those readings from the standard speedo then these are definetly wrong, the standard speedo is way out at high speeds. my FD is tuned still with standard turbos and i have had it go off the clock several times. A standard FD with do about 155-160 max and it takes quite a bit to increase that to 180+
I have just under 400hp at the fly. my standard one used to hit about 160 on the clock, and this felt well quicker, anyway i digress. I need to sort this boost problem out. My plan of action is
a) check to see if ive hurt my plugs
b) check my turbo hoses replace with blue silicone.
Just off topic again. what is the road speed with 17inch wheels with 50profile tyres in 5th gear at 7600rpm? thats prob more like my true speed.

Mate im runnnig a T51r 1/2 bridge and ill doubt ill see that lol
Sure it wasn\'t 180kph as this is the standard speedo reading on most imports?
ok enough taking the mick, i have seen alot of people who believe the standard speedo :p
Most likely thing mate is that one of the tubes in the "rats nest" has come loose/split or something like that, i think everyone who has had the twins has had issues with the "rats nest", ive had enough of mine now and am going single soon :chat
I question the accuracy too. the road lines all became one though lol. And yes im sure the reading wasnt in kph, lol 180kph would only be 90mph or similar. God what are you all like. Im trying to find a solution to my problem. Ill just rip my engine bay apart and find the leak and replace all the pipes using the simplified setup, im on poor mans non seq at the mo so i may as well do that too.
Best thing to do is take a satnav that measures speed and see what your top speed is. The tomtom satnav i have is only 2 mph out as ive tried it in 4 different cars
Yeah i was thinking that, when i went around europe the speed, was about 5 mph out at 125, and about 2 mph out at 70, clock to sat nav, i have one on order now. I think maybe 15mph out max, so 165mph maybe more realistic when reading 180. I need a cerbera, they do 185 out the box and they are pretty cheap these days.
yes but ther are ****E!!!....worse reliability than a rex!!!
i had my rex showing 175 mph on a set of converted mazda speed dials once. if you allow 10% for speedo inaccuracy it would still be 158
according to a friend of mine - he got the PFC to show 189 on the ring ??
Cerberas are a beast. If i was interested in reliability i wouldnt have owned 2 rx7s.

cerbs are probably the most unsafe car on the road in an accident
ive had the misfortune of loosing a friend in a cerbera in a rta put me right off the idea of selling my fd to buy one
colum
Any speed above 60mph into another object, be it stationary or travelling towards you will generally result in a fatal injury in (almost) all cars!
Cerbera, Ultima, Cateram, Radical, RX7 etc etc are made for driving fast, as with most things in life there are risks, this will never change no matter what car you drive!
Just my opinion chap
P.S. Cerbera\'s are gorgeous, NA RW No Traction control \'Proper drivers car\'
How do RX\'s handle VMAX?
Heading to Germany in the summer so am wondering what sort of safe speeds i can achieve on the autobahns?
I\'m sure this kind of speed was only done on a Prviate road. Right? ;)
Adam
are you sure it wasn\'t on the ps2/3 need for speed lol i had mine at 155 mph on twins at 0.9 it was making 374 at the fly wheel and i was on 18" wheels sorry i dont see it my read was from pfc

You should - with my T70, 1 bar and a crap intercooler and huge intake temps I saw 173 through timing beams at Bruntingthorp over about 1.2/1.4 miles.
You do need around 400+bhp to see 180 on anything other than an autobahn though.

only running .5 bar at mo until tuesday when hopefully it will be up to 1.5 bar. Was mapped to 1.15 and was hitting 460+ rwhp so we will see.
Do you honestly want to risk chancing it though. Already got a month ban for speeding last year :2Mad
at the Fighting Torque event last year (3/4 mile drag racing) at the end of the run i saw 165 on the standard speedo which tripped the beams at a true 157...so the speedo isn\'t that far out
as the man said...there was plenty more to come

what wheels were you running mate? standard wheels or similar size the speedo is probably not that far out but if you say had 18\'s or 19\'s its probably alot further out
my car hasnt run right since it was not boosting properly the day after and then yesterday it went pop my front rotor is not holding any pressure and i did a comp test this morning, the engine rattles but i still managed to drive it 40 miles on one rotor.
Who says these things like being revved??? mine sure didnt. this top speed run has ****ed my car.
anyone got and engine for sale or a kit to rebuild or an old engine with the rear rotor blown?
If it was on larger wheels we would be going faster than displayed right? smaller wheels whould mean the speed would over value the mph.
Im just quoting what my speedo said and i know they are innacurate, im pushing 350bhp at the fly.
also i was sold the car as only having 4000 miles on a new engine, i have done 6000 in it and pop ======= i was lied to, the reciept for teh build was a fake. im well annoyed
Was it rebuilt by a well known company? Who did you buy the car from?

17x9 255/40 rear
thats also what is printed on the sticker inside the door, so i know its standard for an import 94 Type R

Totally agree with the 10%.known a standard FD see 174mph on the clock,so about 157mph.Why do people want more power in a road car?
Oh, and i beat all the Cerberas bar one. There were at least 10 there. So they might be beasts....but my car is beastier :Tongue1
When the pistonheads site search stops crashing i\'ll find the results for you.

my experience would suggest they are not 10% out when running standard wheel sizes...
where did this 10% theory come from? Thats a
lot. Why would a Rex have a speedo thats worse than others?
It doesn\'t, as i have found.
Its a slippery shape as well...

surely if they didnt you would probably go out of business :p surely you make most of your money from hop ups for road cars
I love doing the conversions for more power too,but a standard FD,0-60 in 5 secs,175mph top speed,on the clock, and handling allowing them to be driven stupidly fast,do you really need more in a road car? For the track, yes!

94 Type R\'s had 17" rims?

i can tell you they are more than 10% out then i would imagine over 100mph they are even further out. At 60mph my clock show about 70mph. I know this is factual as i have an apexi rsm which is far more acurate than the standard clocks. I believe the inauracy is done on purpose by the manufactures.
larger wheels dont always mean speedo is wrong if you have the right tire size on the wheel the rolling radius should be the same size

i\'ll take a piccy of the sticker inside the drivers door if you like...

if they are 10% as you say then over 100mph would be more wouldn\'t it? 10% of a higher number...
i still say they arent and have the experience to prove it. Indicated 165 was real 157.
at indicated 90 my mates Road Angel said 83...so its not a percentage, mine over-reads by a similar amount whatever the speed
cerbera\'s are wicked cars, old man\'s on his third one, first one he did 90+ thousand in and the second one did about 70+ thousand in, all trouble free used everyday for work....at the end of the day, its all about how you treat them, just like the rex\'s :)
as for un-safe bit of a strong statement......got a picture of one of these in a tvr sprint magazine where a guy carshed at over 140mph and came out with out a scratch on him (bit of a sore back though ;) ).all depends on what you hit but id be supprised if the rex did that. i would say the rx is more un-safe than the cerb.......
unlucky about your car mate, sorry to hear its gone pop......hope you get it sorted...

What kind of wheels are they? I mean, what do they look like? same as the stock 16s but bigger? or are they a BBS rim? got a piccy? (rims not sticker ;-))

Each car will be slightly different maybe but i wouldn\'t believe sat nav, thats inacurate aswell it constantly has to calculate your speed by distance traveled ie. is doesn\'t allow for corners and still has delays as it has to think. For accuracy something that splices into the speed sensor wire is far more acurate.
I think the best way to look at it is rpm i recon assumeing your on the standard rev limiter the you\'d hit that at approximately 170mph so 180mph is well out the question assumeing you make it to 7k thats about 150mph. These figure are really rough neither do i have any idea where it will top out not been on a track day yet.

if you don\'t believe the road angel thats fine, but the 157 at indicated 165 was throught timing beams at a drag event - see my earlier posts.
Just a couple of things. I was overboosting and only mapped for point .8 and the boost controller was showing .9 to 1 bar. i think it was too late by then oops. thing is the car ran ok that night. just the day after it was lumpy then a week later it totally went.
As far as my speed goes. i was on 17/40s width doesnt matter. and the rpm was over 7500 rpm. there is a conversion table somehwere but i couldnt get it to work it out for me.
im not bothered if it was 165 or 185 it was damn quick and ive blown my motor up as a consequence of overboosting.
this is probably a sticky wastegate? i could have been making major power just before the blow and i was not looking at all my guages (can you blame me)
Im very impressed to see the rx7 with tuning being better than a cerbera over a 1/4 mile. what about the mile though, those cerberas do 185 ya know.
As for crash speeds, in a road car id be very suprised if anyone would survive a major colliosion with a lamp post at over 60mph. im taking my rx apart now for a new engine and the crumple zones dont exactly look 2008 5 star ratings. id put money on there being a negligible difference if an rx hit a cerbera head on at closing speed of 80 mph ie 40 each.
A head on smash with each car doing 40mph is the equivalent of two 40mph impacts, not one 80mph impact :yes
Yeah mucker. If a cerbera was stationary and a rx hit it head on doing 80....what would the difference in damage be if they both where doing 40 and hit head on? post pics if you can please
i take it they wouldnt look the same because of the cerbera having more inertia or kinetic energy doing 40 than a rx doing 40?
The closing speed is still 80mph though which was what i was trying to say
This thread is flying everywhere isnt it
Although the closing speed maybe 80mph, the actual amount of energy would be different. (Exponential increase in energy required to move an object at 80mph compared to 40mph)
Classic thread hijack :wiggle

I\'d go along with your figures - I was involved in a magazine article a few years ago at Bruntingthorpe, and with GPS timing gear, my clock saw 160 which turned out to be 152. So 5% overread at the top end, the same as yours.
5% it is then. My car now has a top speed of 0mph so reduce that by 5% = 0mph.
I was overboosting thats why i went pop, but i dont know why
