Title: Boost pattern query
Post by: jpc on March 14, 2008, 08:51:22 AM
After I recent service for my unmodified 2000 RS, I put on a Gtech meter and the results were a repetable 276-278 bhp at the rear wheels (320fly?). That\'s odd I thought, its only supposed to be around 240 on a dyno and less due to wind/road resistance so should have been say 230.  (99+ R/RS use slightly better turbos for 280PS from the factory).

The other odd thing is that the boost gets up to 14psi (10kPa) as measured on the dash boost gauge (standard on this model). This was when flooring it in 2nd year, it does the same in higher gears on the motorway.

I know the Gtech meter is reasonably accurate, I have been using it on another car and the results line up with the various mods that have been done.

The RX7 is unmodified, still with the original exhaust/intake etc.

So, the questions are:

(1) What is the standard boost pattern for the stock twins? (99+ R/RS turbos). I know the pattern for the pre-99 twins was 10-8-10psi.

(2) If the boost is showing 14 psi, is this a fault? (gauge/solenoid?).

(3) Did Mazda just quote the 99+ R/RS at 280PS to match the showroom
limit and in reality its a bit more?

Thanks for any advice.

Jon.

Not all the post99 FDs were "280"hp, as you probably know, some were still 265. The ones with the higher output have the abraidable seals round the turbine blades - can\'t remember which models had these, yours probably did.

Boost was upped to give the 280hp figure on the abraidable seal turbo pack, and is around 0.9bar, which is ~13-14psi.

Boost pattern will still have a dip as all the solenoids etc do their business, but the later post 99 cars had a simpilfied rats nest so the dip should be less noticable.

Some people say the 280hp cars did have more hp. I personally have dynoed mine (a 2002 model) and I had around 230-240 at the hubs, so around 280-300hp depending on how you wish to do the flywheel conversion. All standard, no mods. You will certainly not be getting anywhere near 280 at the wheels with no mods.

Hope that helps!

It was on the R/RS/RZ/Spirit but not the RB/RB-S.  I have an RS.

That makes sense then. I had read in the Brian Long book that those ones had 11psi. That didnt line up with the 14psi I saw.

Still odd though that going from 10psi to 14psi for the modified turbo, only gives a power gain from 265 to 280.

I didnt know the 99+ had a differenet rats nest. Tx for the info.

Maybe the weight I tapped into the Gtech was wrong then. I put in 3100lb, 2900lb for the car and added another 150lb for me and 50lb for petrol and luggage. The Rx7 result was 85% higher than my boosted MX5 that should be putting out 150bhp at the wheels (supercharger, 6ps, intake mods).

It does, thanks. As long as the car isnt faulty, I\'m happy.  It\'s fantastically quick for me.
