Ok here goes, this one is prob for Stu & Prof, but open to everyone :Thumbsup! !
The cabrio we recently obtained is now a runner which is good, the drivers\' side light stays in the up position - which is not good!
The motor is happy to raise the light, but doesn\'t lower it, having looked to the setup, it appears that there is one relay as the motor only moves one way so why does the light only go up??????? The guy that sold the car has two spare lights with motors which he is planning on sending us, but the motor seems to work (for half a revolution!) so I don\'t know if that\'ll fix it.
Suggestions?????
The motor assembly has a limit switch built in and also a relay for the motor. The relay is fed with a pair of feeds, a bit like a 2 way light switch. When you switch over the flow by operating either the service switch or the headlights, the relay switches and the motor can operate. It will keep going until the limit switch is released, when the current is then interrupted and the relay drive is removed. When you switch off the lights or operate the service switch to lower the lights, you get the same thing, but this time the motor operates in the opposite direction.
It\'s possible the \'RD\' or Down signal is not getting to the motor assembly, or the limit switch on the motor is sticking and not allowing the motor to drop back down - I read somewhere that there is a mechanical limit that you can adjust, and if you set this too far, the headlight will stay up - no idea where that is - sorry.
If it\'s a UK cab, then there is also a retractor relay (an extra relay in front of the rad) that operates in tandem with the relay in the light switch and the service switch. It gets it\'s signal from the dip-dim relay control unit which is a small grey box behind the glovebox. It\'s one of the 2 center relays - not sure which, but if you disconnect it, the lights will not go up or down - so it\'s easy to work out which !
If you need the wiring diag for this, I have some scanned ones from Moonwrap that I can send you :)
1 - do both lights raise
2 - does only one go down
if so - mine did this to start with
what i did - got underneath the car and if you look where the manual winder is - i got a 22mm socket ( or one that fits ) and just kept winding it for about 5 mins in the same direction
this makes the light go up , down , up , down etc...
then sprayed the motor with WD40 and kept doing it - eventually the light would go up and down of its own accord
you might have a dodgy switch - if you take off the dash surround , unplug the light switch - you can see the block connector
one of the pins raises both lights , the other lowers them
so you can always put 12v to the up , then the down , then the up
if this works - the it proves that the wiring and relays are OK - if it stops working when you put the switch back - then you dont have a true 12v feed to the switch ( which both mine and daves had )
you just need to run 12v from the light fuse in the engine bay to the back of the switch
you might want to invest in a power probe off ebay - worths it weight in gold and you can track elec faults soooo quick with it :D

Moonwrap currently has the same prob on her cab - let us know if you have any joy :)
