Title: Newbie - Buying a Rex
Post by: StevoSLW on March 10, 2008, 11:26:28 AM
:WaveBye Hey guys

Just sold my BMW Z3 M Coupe to free up some cash.

I am now after a turbo\'d jap car to replace it with. Must be stylish, rare, quick as fcuk, easy to tune, and an occasion to drive,

Im thinking a RX7 is the way forward.

Can anyone give me advice on what to look for.

I have seen a few on ebay and autotrader. Prices seem to vary massively. Eg I looked at a really nice one for £4k that drove superb (it sold) and more expensive ones that were complete sheds.

The main concern is the cost of an engine rebuild. What are the symtons of a engine requiring such a job?

Any help would be much appreciated, and hopefully i will see you at a future meet.

Cheers

Steve

Hi Steve,

Welcome aboard! :)

The search is your friend as these questions are asked all the time.  Im sure you will find answers to all your buying questions, just have a good read.

While im on read as much as you can and dont go buying the first one you see.  Buying a car from this very club would be a good move :)

Chris

Nice one fellas, every little helps.

Im watching this Type R on Ebay - also on Autotrader for £4250 ono, see below

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Immaculate-Original-1993-Mazda-RX-7-No-Reserve_W0QQitemZ140214347485QQihZ004QQcategoryZ18211QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Immaculate-Original-1993-Mazda-RX-7-No-Reserve_W0QQitemZ140214347485QQihZ004QQcategoryZ18211QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

I emailed the guy and he says there has been no rebuild. He says the engine pulls strong with no smoke and rev\'s freely to the red line, stops and starts hot or cold.

What do you think?

A lot of people are claiming rebuilds in Japan and have no proof! Is this normal?

If it hasnt had a re-build fella then budget toward one if you buy.  Also if it says its re-built in Japan, pinch of salt and price it accordingly.

You can have a rotary compression test done on the car by a specialist which will give you a bit of an idea on condition, but these are by no means fool-proof.

If you can afford it buy one thats been recently re-built and still under a proper warrenty from the builder.

With no proof of rebuild, take it as no rebuild! Sounds harsh, but you don\'t want to pay a premium to find that the seller was telling you porkys!

First question: What is your budget?

If you can stretch to a car with a recent rebuild from a reputable engine builder (search on here and you\'ll find a few names which come up again and again) go for it! (say circa £7k - £8k should net you a decent car)

I\'d suggest a good recently rebuilt car with some minor mods would be the way to go - unless you are prepared to spend upwards of £11k in which case you should be able to find a good single turbo with all the supporting mods and a recent rebuild
