Title: Huge engine problems Please help!
Post by: adamk on March 08, 2008, 06:29:10 PM
Hi all, I think my motor has gone pop but im not quite sure!

Sorry for being boring but ill give you as much info as I can hopefully to help you help me!

Its done 16k from a rebulild at WGT and has been always serviced. 1993 FD TT

The history
I had an mot the other day that failed on emmisions, turns out he was doing the wrong test, however before I found this out I fitted a new Lambda sensor! Passed MOT all is good.

I went out for a good thrash yesterday came home and left the car running for a minute to cool down, On returning to the car the alarm was on saying add coolant, I turned the engine off and checked the level it was low but not quite off the stick, The car also sounded like bubbling (from the water system)
I filled the car, the alarm cleared I started it and all was ok (did not drive)
I have had the car use a small amount of water before I just came to accept it (every few months)

So my partner (whist I was out) went to go in the car to work, I get a TXT "car wont start got lift to work"! ****!!!!!

I have just returned home and had a go with the car, It would not start! I tried jumping the car with another batt, No go but a HUGE smell of Fuel.

Flooded I thought! So I removed the fuel pump relay and again started to turn the car over, It coughed and farted and had a go to start.
I then put the relay back in place.
With a few more turns the car fired up...... however it was running bloody horrible, huge white smoke and small amounts of black smoke. with a very strong smell of petrol.
I jumped in the car and went up the road.
The oil press and water temps are fine, and with no other warning lights
up.

The car drives fine so as long as very very steady, As soon as it comes under load or you try to accelarate, it jolts to a stall and gives off A HUGE HUGE backfire! So I came back home driving very steady.

The idle is ok and the cars sound to me like it always has!

The cars now on the drive in my bad books!!! Again!!!! LoL

Has anyone please please got any ideas or pointers?

The only thing I can think is that I have not put the Lambda sensor in tight enough (due to its its location) and  its workied loose when the car has been propper warmed through!
But would this small "exhaust leak" cause such a major problem?

Please help

Kind regards
Adam:( :(

what ecu are you running?

map sensor is on passeger side bulkhead. Behind the inlet elbow. Its a small black box with a vacum pipe coming off. Might not be this but my old FD did similar once and found the sensor was faulty.

Some with more experience might be able to shed more light

Its a standard car mate! standard ECU!
I thought the lambda would be a bit lucky!
Its all staring to sound like a trip on a trailer to PIP at WGT. More bloody money!!!

So does anyone think it sounds like could be more serious than a sensor?

doesnt sound to serious to be honest just the fuelling isnt right so sounds like a sensor down somewhere.

Without checking everything it might be easier and quicker for Pip to have a look.

Get the AA to tow it as it wont start :Giggle

by the way Adam, removing the fuel pump relay will NOT stop the fuel pumping on an FD.

(sorry to hear about your problems)

Glad it weren\'t anything serious, 99% of problems / odd faults on a standard TT Rex seem to be with the vacuum system which is why soo many people go single :D

Im selling her people!!!!!!!

I have come to the decision that I must move on from my Rex!

Ill be very sad to see her go, but Its time get the car I have always wanted! a Lovely totally standard R32 GTR. (spit spit I hear you say)

I know this may sound very silly (and you shall all spit at me again LOL) but the rotary engine concept scares the **** out of me!
I just need a car with pistons again!!! .
With Just this tiny fault I totally **** a brick!!!!!! and this just further confirmed by feelings towards my car.
I love them so very much the looks are second to none. When you sit in it its like being in a MIG 29!
Its just that black magic rotary engine I can\'t even start to understand,  and with major items have never heard of!
I get a daft a feeling that its going to cost me BIG money at any time! even tho I always pamper the car with money and maintenance.

But I suppose thats why we love them ey!

Don\'t get me wrong the FD rotary is unlike anything I have ever (and prob will ever) drive, so smooth and such an great power delivery and the sound is just unreal!

I just need to move on, shame cos i\'m bloody well attatched to the car!

Maybe ill get another in the future! a 99 spec! (yum) when the prices come down (if they ever do).

Thanks guys you are a truely great bunch of people, probably the best,  most helpfull and freindly owners club I have been in.

But Im not going quite yet tho!!!
Not untill I sell the car, Please check out my add if anyone is interested.

Again Thanks to everyone!

Adam

dont do it, i had a 33 GTR and a 34 GTR and believe me the FD beats them hands down. I went the same way as you and sold my FD and went Skybus route and missed my FD everyday.

Up to you what you do mate but i bet your miss the FD the day you sell it. Plus parts for the liners are more experience and are not as bomb proof as everyone thinks

A " lovely totally standard R32 GTR" ? Is there such a thing left in the country? Strange. It\'ll be older than any FD you could buy, and no more likely to be reliable. Shamefully neglected and abused by at least two out the  five or six owners with varying degrees of talent, knowledge and budget, including one scruffy teenage M"x P*w*r reader who bought it cos they\'re only four grand now and he wanted to practise his drifting skills like wot they does in Fast an Furious, innit, feel me? Until he "drifted" into the railings outside the McD\'s one night showing off to his mate(s) and then covered up the damage with a genuine "On a Mission" sticker from Halfrauds. Yeah, good luck with that, dude! I\'m sure it\'ll be lovely and reliable!

As far as i was aware the R32\'s in particular have about the same rep for engine rebuilds as the RX7 but cost twice as much to rebuild. The same can be said for Impreza P1\'s.

Its all to do with the heads on them, they can crack very easily and that was the leak link in the RB26 engine. If you are going to get one please make sure you get new rad, thermostat, oil cooler etc. Cracked head is mega £££££££

I read that they spun bearings quite easily as well?

Yeah they can do, but Nissan put a fix in on the R33 to stop it happening as much. Even the R34\'s suffer from overheating as they are the same lumps as R33.
My engine rebuild on my 33 cost close to £9k and that was only changing to uprated pistons and a few other internal things. 9k on something that only produced 600 bhp is the same as a 400 - 450 bhp FD

Don\'t forget the perrenial Skyline feature of the rear pot overheating and eating its piston. Or gumming up the ring land with carbonised oil so it sticks the ring out, chews it up and mangles the bore in the process. What I said above was slightly tongue in cheek, but its a truism nonetheless there just aint no such animal as a cheap, reliable performance car. The newest R32 you could get would be , what, \'94? That\'s a fourteen year old car. it\'s gonna have issues!

Bloody hell I think Ill get a Ford focus D!! LoL

There are bad and good points on all cars! I suppose its just down to personal taste. I like the skyline more than the Rex however I do love rex\'s!

But why would a skyline be thrashed and not a RX7 ????? thats like saying a 205 gti is less thrashed than a 5 turbo?
Can\'t any car be abused and not looked after?
Thats a stupid comment!

Thanks for your pointers tho everyone,

Ill go see what the guys on the GTR owners club think! LoL LoL

May be keeping it yet, I have had no interest!

Any Thanks Ill have a look at my water cap (cheers)

the oil pumps also play up and destroy the big end bearings also if it has vvt the cam that operates it is on a solenoid that is also prone to give up at low revs and make it sound like a tractor until revved

Part of the fun of the rotary is that it just asks to be rev\'d to death when warm :D

I\'ve got 2 of the buggers and wouldn\'t change it for anything.

You will be completely bored of the skybus. Just not a drivers car like the FD, just too much computer control. Supposed to be very quick but more a sledge hammer of a car.

Stick with the FD for a couple of months. At least till the weather improves !

I don\'t hate SkyLards, I did say I was speaking tongue in cheek! They can be made into truly amazing cars; one of my mates has an R33 GTR thats on around 500-ish horse and it is truly awesome, it can rearrange time and space BUT its cost him near 90 grand to get it to that point and keep it useable as a road car that doesnt sh!t itself every other week. He absolutely loves it to bits, and so he should, but even he admits if he knew the time and money and aggravation it\'d cost, he would never have started on it.

A Skyline is a massive, heavy, complicated thing with loads of complex diffs/rear steering gubbins/transfer cases and so on hanging off its gusset that are put there just so they can break expensively when you put some extra power through them. A Rex is none of these things!

Lesson number 3:

Rx7 > Skyline > Evo > Supra > Any honda

Had to tell it like it is ..
If anyone says differently they are deluded.

True, got to love the purity of the Rex. Good weight distribution, good power, lack of weight, rear wheel drive, limited slip diff and no traction control. Its a drivers car.

You need to respect it. I still get butterflies in my stomach when i go out in mine and i\'ve had it a year. It scares me, and i have a healthy respect for it.

If i\'d owned this thing at 18 i wouldn\'t be here now.
