Any tips please for removing the original underseal on my T2 convertible?

Any luck with solvents? Heat?

Pair of wrap around goggles and a stainless Wire brush. Not a clean job and you will get bits everywhere you don\'t want it. Just get rid of much of the loose gunk and then top up the layer. On the 1st gen I got it back to the the painted surface. Gave it a fresh coat of Zinc Oxide Primer and then a good thick coat of undercoat.

I used a painted on goop that went very far and wasn\'t too expensive. Seems to have done the trick quite well. Although I will need to do some welding in the summer to the inner wings and bodywork. Its a 23yr old car thats used in all weathers so it is expected.

Unless its peeling off or lots of rust I would leave as much on as possible as its already doing its job well.  I take its the original ? as the stuff you get from Halfords will almost brush off with some white sprits!!..  This is a dirty job and defo the need for goggles. If you use the Shultz stuff this will be very thick stuff and gives it a very good rubberized coating, comes in black and is very good for sealing joints and welds etc.  I actually use the spray stone chip stuff underneath as it seems to do the trick but more so under the arches and hard used areas.  I was told that sometimes the underseal can do more harm than good as it can trap in the moisture and corrode from the inside.

we have been known to do this sort of thing on occasion, what we do is put the car on stands outside and have an apprentice crawl under it with a steam cleaner, after this is done (properly) leave it standing in the corner of the workshop for a day to dry out then put it on the ramp and attack it with a 4" wire wheel on a Angle grinder to clean up any loose paint/sealer under the car, once all thats done the edges of the sills/exhaust etc are masked, now any bear metal is primed and the floor is spray schultz\'d  and left a couple of hours to dry.... Then any box sections are wax oiled and we\'re done..

The main problem i had with my Vert was i left it outside over night, this was proberly not the best idea as my window to Roof seals leaked and soaked all the carpets etc, so over a few years it cleanly rotted the floor pan away from the inner sill section and the front edges of the back inner arches :( hence the reason it ended up in the Mazda show room in the sky :( so the moral of the story is if you are doing the work on the floor ether keep it in a garage or make sure its water tight.

could not agree with you more Grizzly, most of the FC\'s rot from the inside out, trapped water and moisture is the killer.
