Title: Anyone using a Garrett GT40R ?
Post by: Kruizer on March 04, 2008, 09:59:43 PM
I was onto rx7store.net and gave them my requirements. Target goal of 600rwhp and they suggested the GT40R and V-Mount Intercooler.

I\'m aware I will need to uprate the injectors, fuel pump, ecu and rebuild the engine with porting but is this kit being optimistic for my goal ?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated as i don\'t want to waste thousands of euro\'s... Spec\'s :

600RWBHP is a bit extreme for a road going RX mate, bearing in mind that a 400RWBHP RX will probably keep up with a 550 bhp skyline or supra.
Not sure about the GT40R but my old GT35R made just under 400RWBHP.
Americans power estimates or even dyno readings for cars/setups are usually a bit optamistic too!

Look at the GT42R from A-spec. Doesn\'t use a T style foot print. It also has to be made for a RHD car specific. LHD kits will not fit. A-spec make RHD kits too.

Thanks Lum. The more info the better. Why would a 400rwhp keep up with a 550bhp skyline / supra. Weight ? Or just that the rotary would rev quicker ? (Please excuse my ignorance/ lack of knowledge)

To be honest the car will only see the light of day a couple of times a year. Its not my only project car at the moment.

@ Shaun : So i\'d need to go bigger again ?:Hammer

Yeah the RX is a fair bit lighter than the others mate.
I think you need to be looking at a T51 or a T88 to make 600BHP, probably on a bridge ported engine i\'d think!

Post by: shaunwil on March 04, 2008, 10:34:37 PM
They only weigh 1250kg, the supra and skline are about 1600kg. Makes a big difference. Plus the way the power comes on with a rotor is very different.

The GT42R has done 730bhp on EarnieT\'s bridgeported Rx7 in america. You should get the 600 your after over here with some serious porting too.

The other big problem with power like that is most stuff isn\'t strong enough to properly cope too. The gear box, diff, axles, and countless other stuff will break under that kind of load.

Is it just pub talk, a good A-spec GT35R 500 is supposed to be a very good turbo that is guarenteed to 500bhp at the wheels on an america dyno, possibly more like 400-450 over here.

@ Lum : I was looking at a T04Z before on nengun and it works out at €3,723.08 or £2852.22. Myself and a few other lads are flying Carl from Hayward Rotary over to Ireland to map our 7\'s next month hence the rush to find the right kit.

@ Shaun : I\'d rather have real figures than pub figures from my car. 500rhwp in the real world would suit me alot better that 600 pub talk ;) Is bridge porting very severe on the engine ?

Are you going to map on the Dyno? if you are let us know your results and post the charts love to see a rotary dyno at 600rwhp on this side of the pond.

You will need a big ported engine and lots of boost eg 1.6 BAR
If you are serious to get hit 600rwhp then you will need to go GT42R or T51R turbo kit.

The most you will get out of a T04z is 500rwhp may be a little more if you use race fuel.

We were going to have the cars mapped on the road but i might seek permission from our local university to use their RR. I know a friend of mine is using it on a development program at the moment.

600rwhp sounds a bit much for me and i\'m not embarrassed to admit it so I\'ll aim to hit 600bhp at the flywheel instead. Should be an easier goal. I\'ve an easy supply of VP Racing Fuel as well so that might help too :D

yep plus on the Dyno you can see if there is problems with ignition,restrictions etc
Plus no chance of crashing the thing on a 4th gear pull lol
Have you ridden in a true 400rwhp rx7 yet? as quick as a 500rwhp Skyline or Supra probably quicker actually, Colin Chapman 101 weight is everything :D

I\'ve been in a few high hp cars but never a high hp rotary. I think i\'ll stick with my original choice and just try to get the most out of it ! Hopefully with porting and a few other bits i\'ll hit the 600bhp mark @ the fly.

I\'m just waiting on my Membership to be approved and i\'ll post up a project thread with all the pic\'s of the build, if ya fancy a look, here is the car from when it was bought in japan to how it sits now. Select 30 images per page or you\'ll be there all night LoL :D

You can make 500rwhp on a T51 or GT42 with a very big non-bridged side ported motor. However, I can probably count on the fingers of one hand the number of RX7s in the UK that genuinely make that power.

I\'d honestly seriously suggest that you drive a 400rwhp RX7 before thinking about trying to push for 600hp. The costs involved in getting to 600hp for more than a couple of minutes between rebuilds is vastly different to a 400hp setup. And I said, there are very few people (tuners) in the UK that have built anything close to making that power.

Oh, and if you are even remotely contemplating trying to power map high hp cars on the road you need your head read. Its irresponsible, sooner or later this will be proven very much for the worse I fear. Fine tuning on the road after dyno time is one thing, pulling 1.6bar on the road on and off for a couple of hours while doing a complete map is going to end in a custodial at best if you\'re caught!

Good luck with it, let us have some graphs from your weekend :)

Is it a Roller Dyno or Hub Dyno. Seen this kind of power off a Cossie on rollers and they had over 10 people in the car trying to get it to stay on the rollers. That was 620bhp at the wheels with NOS !

You would need some serious porting too !

Decent chassis dynos are designed such now that the harder the car pulls the more its pushed into the roller. People sitting in boots is not necessary! Look at the dyno comps they have in Aus, they manage to put down 1500hp without ppl hanging on to the rear end of it :yes

Looking at the boost map peak performance for that gt40r is at approx 2.2bar which is probably where they get there 600rwhp figure from.

The y axis on the compressor map indicates the pressure ratio, NOT the gauge pressure...

They get 600 rwhp from using a Dynojet.

witha gt40 88 with enough boost and race gas i would say yes....oh and a bridge port would be needed.

Witha t51 or gt42 you could do it on a BIG street port IMO

That seems pretty steep to me mate! Is that for a HKS T04Z? and is it the full turbo kit or just the turbo itself?
I\'ve got a T04Z myself, it\'s a garrett one however not the HKS one and cost less than half that!

Not yet you havent,but with the development going on at the likes of dragon,you will definately see alot more 600+rwhp cars soon.Chris impey,myself and gary gooding all have well in excess of 600rwhp,such power is relatively useless in our climate,try driving with over 2 bar boost on our roads-not for the faint hearted.
KRUISER-stick with the gt40r v mount set up with the right fuelling and ignition mods it will prove an awesome allround vehicle.:wave

if you wanna stay strretported with boost of say 1.2-1.3 bar i would say the 4088 will get you about 430-450ish rwhp.....go bridge youll be closer to 500rwhp.

One is journal bearing, one is ball bearing,the latter is a better turbo,should cost alot more,
Turbochargers > GT40 Family >GT4088 - 703457- 2
* Journal bearing turbocharger
* Oil-cooled bearing system
* High Load Capacity GT Journal Bearing System
* High performance BCI-18 compressor and UHP turbine
* 6-bolt turbine outlet flange
* T4 (International-style) turbine inlet flange

Turbochargers >GT40 Family > GT4088R - 751470-2
* High Performance C117 Compressor and UHP Turbine
* Brings GT Ball Bearing performance to the 700Hp class
* V-band turbine outlet flange

Need to make sure the manifold is designed to utalise the twin-scroll of the turbo, otherwise it wont be as efficient as capable of.

good choice if you want to get to your 600 target, plus the T51R V band exhaust manifold and rear compressor housing is a unique design which has good flow characteristics rather then the traditional T4 type square flange footprint.
Make sure the porting of your engine is big enough to spool that sucker properly
