Title: MOT time
Post by: adamk on March 03, 2008, 12:38:40 PM
Yes its that time of the year and my FD rex is having its 1st MOT under my ownership! Im sure as hell it will fail on emmisions!

The car has a de-cat front pipe otherwise the exhaust is standard, It passed last year as the car is now (with WGT) but I just cant see how?? as it burns your eyes out with super-unleaded if you stand round the back of the car when its running (engine hot or cold)!!!:xconfused :xconfused and always has done! Is this normal?

Im also getting about 18mpg is this also normal? (Not a worry As I understand they are a heavy fuel using motor so as long as this is normal)

Just incase it does fail,(oh ek) has anyone any ideas how to get emmisions down?
The air pump is working and the car is fully serviced and runs a standard ECU with no Mods bar de-cat and induction filters!

Also How can I test the Lambda sensor?

Only advantage is that the local MOT place has a "no pass, no pay" policy. LoL (As they only do MOT\'s! Called MOT Max at Newark Notts, great idea!)

Many Kind thanks

Adam

mmm correct me if im wrong but arent you meant to run after market fuel computer if you have decatted the car on stock ecu. Only saying this as mine through a tip on first rebuild after i had a de-cat fitted but the ecu was standard.

oh, and put your cat back on
Title: MOT time
Post by: adamk on March 03, 2008, 07:23:20 PM
I Dont have the original front cat????:2eek :2eek

Before I owned the car, WGT put the de-cat on!, I can only hope that Pip knows what he is doing (as I know he does) WGT also gave the MOT after this de-cat pipe was fitted later on in the year?:3Confused It passed (but I suppose it would!!!!)

As for the ECU and exhaust system, I think im just about safe with my rest of the system being standard!, however I have no visual aids to tell me if this is true (No AFR or commander etc), I will do nothing more in the way of bolt on mods until I have a Good ECU. The car is as It was when I got it.

I\'m running blind!!! I love it?:bandit

I hope to uprade the ECU later this year and finally fit my SS exhaust.
So as long as I don\'t die from shock tmr (£££££) or the fumes kill me!
Probably knock everyone out in the garage Tmr, choke cough splutter!:burnout :burnout :burnout :burnout :burnout :burnout :burnout :burnout :burnout :burnout :burnout

Oh the joys of rotarys!!:wiggle

na your in good hands with Pip.

Just strange as i thought you werent meant to de-cat until you had an uprated ecu on the car

you might be ok visually with the cat because the rex isnt on record, so it will be tested with the bet test, this is a non cat test, so hopefully the tester wont look for one  lol

Can someone please define for me the standard test and the other test?

Is it a harder test with or without a cat? What years are exempt from a test? I need to work this out too. :xconfused

Title: MOT time

this has been covered to death
if uk car after 92 full test cat required
uk car pre 92 no cat test max 3.5 c/o

import cars up to 95
no cat test max 3.5 co/o
if u just do a search this is one of the most widely covered topics

I got this from the web.

The sensor can be tested for output by connecting to it a digital voltmeter, set to a 2v scale. Connect the +ve test lead to the sensor signal wire [See wire colours] (http://www.lambdasensor.com/main/mcolours.htm) and the -ve test lead to earth/battery -ve. The voltage produced should swing from app 0.2v to 0.8v and back around once per second. If the voltage is stuck high then the engine is probably running rich for some other reason. If stuck low then usually either a faulty Lambda Sensor, air leak or an engine running very weak for some reason.

My sensor gives out 0.8 v+ constantly, therefore saying that the engine is rich for another reason!

Funking hell!!!!!

a standard emmisions test is  a max of 4.0%, take your car down the road and get him to do the emmisions first, you should be ok if you got 4.4% previous. check your oil aswell, the thinner the better

as rx7veilside says, he shouldnt find an import, thats why he should have done the set test that we have been on about, you should talk to his manager mate. he has tested your car against figures of another car, thats where th 2.00% has come from

I just rang VOSA, they tried a search for my Vin number, however like you say the vin number does not tie up therefore the car should be tested as a non cat.

The CO is must be <3.5% not <4.0% and the HC is <1200 ppm.

Either way I still fail :( :(

UK Cars have one extra in the downpipe and then the standard mid section CAT...

You can have a Sports CAT made for you if you like by Exhaust UK in Sheffield, got my complete system from there and still passes MOT\'s :D

Right now im totally ****ed off. :2Mad :2Mad :2Mad :2Mad :2Mad

Went for retest today told the blocke he was testing the car under the wrong regs, Showed him my last test, told him i comfired it with the VOSA.

So out comes his book it shows the car must have Co 0.200 and HC 200ppm

He said "we can try it and see what we get"
knowing fully well its a waste of time I told him No its 3.5% Co and 1200 ppm, and that there is not  RX7 in the world that will pass that turned on!!!!

He said "I can only go with whats in the VOSA book" as he showed me!! behold he is right??? I asked that thats prob for a UK car! he shrugs his sholders! PRAT PRAT PRAT ****ING LISTEN TO MEEEEEEYYYAAA.

So I ****ed off mad as **** and told him to stick his re-test up his arse!!!

Tosser!!:reallymad :reallymad :reallymad :reallymad :reallymad

So what the **** is going on?????? I ring VOSA they say its a non cat at 3.5% and 1200ppm and then there book he has shows otherwise!!!

So im very ****ed off right now!

Right, Been on the phone to VOSA........ Again!!!!:Typing

My car is deffo 3.5% co and 1200ppm HC NON CAT TEST!!!
Due to the fact its an import! and the something to do with the Vin number?

I have the MOT station by the balls now because the lad on the phone (vosa) who may I add was great, Says when you go back, tell him to call me and ill put him right!!! and gave me a direct line!:Viking

Problem is im not sure I want to go back and face the guy he may give me a :spank .

Hopefully someone else will be testing it! Prob fail again anyway, Now that would be a pickle!:o

Yer, im in a mess with that idea thinking about it, I have a standard ecu so I dont want a free flowing sports cat yet untill I have fitted a Apexi ecu, also I have a complete exhaust ready to fit! however..... its a 3" mumma. I could prob take the centre section in and get them to fit a sports cat in it when the time comes!

thanks for that mate. I have saved there web page.

just to confirm, the bet test is carried out at idle. he should NOT be checking the car by the book. it is all computerised now. the check MUST be by vin, not model.

Print this out and show it to him and point out it says exact match which is impossible as it is an import.
