Firstly A big hello to all you lucky 7 owners!

My names Andy and I live in derbyshire about 10 minutes drive away from derby if theres any 7 owners round here!

I\'m nearly 20 (April) and after 5 years of pining for a 7 I finally have enough cash saved to purchase my first 7, Insure it (with a little help frm you guys maybe) and also have some left over should a worst case scenario decide to pay a visit to the beast.

Now I don\'t know what people on this forum think about us \'young\'uns\' getting a Rex but i hope you dont bite too hard =)

After passing my test I bought a Renault Clio 1.2 16v mk III.  Now I realise that the 7 has just a little more power than that!  I have also driven a Renault Megane Sport which is a bit closer to the 7\'s power range.  I will soon be coming up on 3 years NCB (touch wood) and feel its time to jump in and get my 7.

I have been reading several 7 forums including this one and Rx7Club for a while now and feel I have some base of knowledge on the 7 ... FAR FAR from being an expert but enough to know what I should and shouldn\'t do!

I know that there is WGT about a hour and a half away from me and I hear that Pip is the fella to speak to on all things 7!  Just wondering if there\'s anyhere alittle closer to home such as in derby or Nottingham??  And if these places (if they exist) are any good?

I\'ve decided what I\'d like to do to the car when I get it but I\'ll list that later when i have a little more time.

I just wanted to say hello to all you guys and apologuise for the extremely long thread!

Thanks for reading

Andy  :guinness

Hi - Welcome

First things first, at uner 20 have you got any quotes on insurance?

I am told that a lot of insurers won\'t offer any cover to the under 25\'s

John

Wow thanks for a fast reply =p

At under 20 I have managed to secure several quotes with the cheapest one being 2.5k fully comp >.<

However!  My dad came up with a good idea in my opinion lets see what you guys think about it!

He said if I really wanted one (which I REALLY do)  I should get it and get 3 months insurence during the summer while the roads aren\'t too wet so I can enjoy the car and then over the colder weter months I can put the car in a heated garage and work on bits that will need doing to it.

You guys think this is a good idea??  After a few years (possibly at 23, 24)  I could insure the car for longer as the quotes should come down a fair bit due to more age, experience with a RWD car and also more NCB.

What you think??

Andy

Welcome bud! getting insurance can be a pain in the bum to be honest. i was 24 when i got my car and elephant were one of the few who would cover me, so try them, gave me a good price after a bit of haggeling too! :yes

if u go to a specialist insurance company having experience on a rwd 250bhp+ car will put your insurance down, so getting insured on it for a year may be a good thing. Though what your planning sounds like the best idea depending o  how much you have to spare for a heated garrage

A Plan Thatcham insurance branch might help

A Rex requires much love and money, so be prepared.  Also, they need careful driving, imperative to contain your hormones when driving !  Adrenaline must be conquered and not given into !  Unless on a track..

Thanks for all the advice which each in its own way is very useful!  Me and my dad have already converted the garage and sorted heating lighting and electricity out in it as we both love little projects hence why i think the rx7 could also be a little project for us both!

Still no news from anyone close to where im at?? =(

i bought my rx when i was 19 and i had many many cars prior and experience in rwd and mechanics etc which helped.

I now have the rx for weekends a celica 2001 for everyday and a merc drift car for drift use.

I am also replacing the celica with a supra mkiv TT 6speed and i find that if you insure them celeverly you can do it at a reasonable price.

all the best.

I\'m with a plan insurance and they are quite good but you need to ask for the jap import a plan in luton. I\'m insured for £960 a year with 4 ncb fully comp and I\'m 25 but I\'ve only been driving for 3 and half years but I\'ve driven other imports from the end of my first year of driving which was a dog to get insurance for as they don\'t insure people on imports in their first year of driving but they let me off as i only had a month left. o and i know it doesn\'t make sense that my ncb is 4 years as I\'ve only been driving for 3 years but when i got my insurance with Norwich the absolute siht union they gave me two years free at the opening of my policy.
but i love my car that much i would pay 5k a year to insure if it came to it but my girlfriend would probably cut my balls off.

Sorry to stray from the topic, M4drx how did you manage to get insured on a rex? what insurance company did you use and what was your premium?

Cheers, Jake

Hello and welcome. The biggest Issue you need to remember is that these cars are extremely quick. Anything that you may have experienced isn\'t really the same. Part of the reason why once you have the rotor buzz you never really want anything else. With some tweeked FD\'s as jurby we where surprising a local Ferrari Owner on the trackday.

I had an AXGT originally, then moved up to a FTO GPX auto and then onto the rex. But I had 1000miles of run in to do and got used to it before the power really came in. I was 25 when I got the FD and it went as a weekend car on a classic policy on just over £400 a year !

I would genuinely say if you really want a 7 buy oldskool. If you want an FD wait till your slightly older and prices are slightly less. Remember if you insure it over summer then you need to make sure you have insurance against theft and malicious damage the rest of the year.

I\'m in the best boat having a 1st gen as well that gets used every day and its a good start as the 1st rwd motor. Plus remember it will easily take a 13b (or 20b) and turbo for one seriously fast little motor. The modding scene is seriously strong in USA and there is just as many mods for the FB as the FD if you look on Rx7club.com

Thanks all for the warm welcome and the ever useful advice.  Just want to work out of work and buy a 7 now.  I would get another RWD car first but my dad say \'you aint buy and selling cars all the time\'  cuz he\'s abit like that :2Confused

Going to start looking more in depth at quotes and see whats the best I can get.  Going to be doing a lot of ringing on my dinner break.

Thanks again and still waiting for someone local to pop up >.<  I know theres 1 or 2 round chesterfield and I\'ve even seen one in the town I live in ( Ripley).  There was also a white one with decals on it down loscoe but the chap sold it so don\'t know where it went >.<

:cheers
Andy

Hello Andy the FD is a great car but if you want my honest opinion with the kinda insurance your gonna pay and the lack of rear wheel drive experience you have I really dont think you should jump in the deep end it would be much better for you to start on something rear wheel drive thats cheaper to fix cheaper to buy and cheaper to insure after you have spun something a few times on a wet road and browned your pants a bit then have another look at a FD a renault megane sport really dont compare buddy sorry dont mean to pee on your fireworks just trying to give some sensible advice about it :)

Hi Andy, welcome.

I\'m a \'young un\' too, 22.  Also not too far away from you, just down the A50 in Stoke.

I\'ve also got 3 yrs NCD so you should be able to sort some insurance out!

Enjoy the Rex! And be careful.  If you\'ve got any trouble then the guys on here really are a great help!  :yes

Cheers for the advice yet again!  I understand what your saying jim and I wasn\'t even trying to compare the Megane to the 7 that would be blasphemous!!  All I was trying to say is that I\'m not going straight from  1.2 into a 7 as I know the out come would probably not be pretty =p.

I\'ll have to talk to ma dad about getting a different car first for a year or so and see if he gives me the go ahead.  Don\'t want to get in trouble =p

Hope everyones having a good day! :WaveBye
