Hello All!
I\'m just curious what difference a single turbo conversion makes? im wondering wether it affects:-
-Fuel Consumption?
-Power?
-Insurance premium?
Is it possible to have a rex that has a single turbo as standard or are they all converted. Is it worthwhile to have it done?
Thanks
Jake :D
hi mate
All 3rd Gen rx7\'s are twin turbo, all single turbos have been converted and the reason for the conversion is usually to get more power as the twin turbos are limited to the boost you can run through them.
Fuel Consumption - In theory before the turbo your fuel consuption would be the same however on boost it would be worse depending on which turbo and other mods, usually if you go single turbo you would also get porting done and change fuelling, i.e. more fuel running through the car and worse fuel economy.
power - yes thats why you would get a single turbo, all depends on which one you go for, there are so many to choose from.
insurance - Would definetly go up if this is declared, insurance companies really dont like modified cars.
Going single turbo is a very broad question there are so many things to consider, there are alot of other mods you would really need to support a single turbo, also there are so many turbos and set ups you can have it really needs to be planned out well. My car is still on twin turbos and is pretty much maxed out as i cant really do much more to it without going single turbo, the most power you will really get on twin turbos is around 400-450bhp @ flywheel.
I was of the impression that single means more manageable boost control and therefore a slight increase in fuel consumption is possible.
OK thanks Sweetiewells... So because im looking to get my first rex soon i shud go for one that is twin turbo... Im only 18 aswell so i want to keep the insurance down to a minimum.
Have you actually gotten a legit insurance quote?
At 23 with 3 yrs NCB i struggled!
going single usually improved fuel economy because your off boost alot of the time. easier to work on. and less problems with the rats nest. more power
i honestly think you`l struggle to insure a single rex at 18 buddy. to be honest though. if you has a single with a small turbo so its no more power than twins. it would be a safer rex to drive as you wouldn`t have the boost swap over at 4500rpm

... I should be able to get insurance. My dad will be putting the rex on his company insurance policy and have me on there as a named driver. I think it will be roughly 750-850 quid :cool. Im more worried about if ive got the driving ability to keep in under control if it decides to kick out. Thats my only reason for holding back. I may get a smaller RWD like a 200sx and keep that for a year or 2 before buying a rex. To build up my NCB as well.
second time ive said this in a week - I was in the same position so i decided to buy a 2nd gen 7 to get used to the handling and to get some experience of fixing the thing. Also if i crash it its £800 down the drain, not £7000
A second gen may be easier to insure than a 200sx, and will handle more like the 3rd gen 7

Very wise words sir. My first RWD car at 18 was a 2.0 tub Starion, until I lost the back end and it became a lamp post hybrid. The Rex has tried to throw a fit a couple of times but I have held her (just). A single turbo rex is an immense piece of kit and deserves serious respect, it would be no bad thing at all for you to wait a little while.

ah i love the terminology on this website!!
too be honest i think you would be better of starting with something a little less powerful, maybe a second gen or something like a 200sxnto get use to it and get experience of rwd. I guess alot of it depends on how mature a driver you are, if you wanna race everything on the roads and have a heavy right foot then yes you will probably end up totaling the car in no time. But if you have respect for the car and are a sensile driver you would probably be ok.

I wanna race everything on the roads. :D Getting a bit frustrating in a 1.3 Ford Fiesta though! :p
haha my other car is a 1.3cdti corsa fast as f*ck!!! :driving
I\'ve got a 1.3 Polo and i nurse it like it\'s a super car and i don\'t know why!
Mk1 XR2 is the way to go proper little go kart if you can still find one
you all seem to have small little run arounds too :P I have a 1.3 Ka.... now thats what i call power! one wrong move in that and you\'ll be regretting it....thats if you can get it to move in the first place:Tongue1:Giggle
on an other note ill look into a 2nd Gen and see what i can find.
nah, i have the wife\'s car when she doesn\'t need it! My FD is the one and only car I own!

Hell of a jump in power and driving style there bud. As you say, maybe a couple of years getting used to RWD before buying the FD.
My bro went from a KA to an MX5. Its an 1.8, and isnt too bad to learn RWD in. There are also plenty of parts if youre wanting to modify.
Just a thought :)

I think i will take that advice ive heard it from a few people plus insurance will be silly so i shall look for a mx-5 not like there bad cars :P i here they handle like a dream:driving
hhhhmmmmmm 1.3 seems to be a reoccuring theme here :Tongue1
I think i must be different then?? I did my Single Turbo mod because my Turbo\'s let go and it would have cost £1200 to get them Recon\'d and it just worked out cheaper to buy a Single turbo kit with the mods i already had fitted.
Plus i like the power delivery, its more predictable when you are giving it some through the twistys.
cool sounds good, i will hopefully go single turbo one day
as soon as i got a 100hp car i wanted a 200hp car etc etc, im at 350bhp now and i want 420, the amount of power isnt a problem, its how mature you are, a young person is very likely to show off too much and take a corner too quick, if you have a good head theres no reason why a young lad cant have a 600hp car. lucky sod

MX-5\'s are wicked. Drove my mother in laws one a few times, and it handles just like an RX-7. Feels like a mini one. Very cool.

if you want to get used to all the maintenance needed, id go for an fc, maybe an egi or tII, think the egi is about the same as the mx-5, though i could be wrong
