Title: How wild are my ports?
Post by: hairyhoover on February 29, 2008, 08:55:31 PM
Hi I am just about to start my newly rebuilt engine tomorrow, i was just wonder how big you think my ports actually are? Would you say a mild street port or am i pushing an extended port? Let me know your thoughts. :D

I think Extended port is some bullsh1t name, basically there all streetports to one degree or another, whenever I hear someone mention extended port, I think of poorly designed pear shaped ports by people who dont know what there on about, just love talking crap.

no different than a rebuilder calling there port work stage 1, stage 2 and stage 3 really is there.

or for non tech people calling the port sizing:flamed . bigger than normal, even bigger than that . or really big!!!!

well it confusing to the novices, just trying to make up names for the sake of it to look clever!
Basically they are Street ports, the size can vary from nearly stock to massive. Simple as that.

Well i always thought it was the other way round, shops made up the "Street port" name but in reality thats all it is (extending the closing edge of the port to alter the timing etc) its like calling a Bridge port a race port???

I do agree with the noob confusion, but if you think about it the extended port name suits what you are looking at rather than Street port.

Plus i\'m sure your aware there are "Street ports" out there that have closer characteristics to a Bridge so do they fall into a "Street" sort of port?

Personally, I think the term \'extended port\' was invented by God, as a warning. The warning being, that if your tuner choses to use that descriptive word, then  they are deluded, misguided and slightly deranged and should be avoided at all costs.
And yes the name may suit it, however surely with nearly every type of porting of any engine your are extending something, so its conpletely generic, might as well be called a \'enlarged\' or \'expanded\' port.

Simon, hows it going? I started it today for the first time! it was  very smoky indeed but it cleared up. must be all the vasaline used.. lots of love went into this. lol

then i ran out of petrol, then i flooded it .....doh. So ive left it until tomorrow for now.

unfortunatly the down pipe does mate properly with the rest of the exhaust. So i need to get it altered slighltly. have you got any ideas?

Ross, people have been calling they type of ports that Era has done an extend since before you were born.
What Era has done is a mild extend in that it extends the duration of the timing phase of the inlet by quite a few degrees. The term is quite correct and defintely not just some made up term.It is one that is recognised by all of the worlds respected long term rotary tuners.

Don\'t you do Bridge ports? ;) or are they called that because they are ment to be driven on Bridges:rollin

as carl says,  they were extended before they were called street port,   they were just nicknamed Street port for the noobs or novices, so they would know its ok to use on the street or a streetable car (american saying that we have taken on)

From my novis porting skills those look really nice and very well done,  a nice healthy streetport!

Are the plates new?,  they look it.   Those with a TO4Z that will be a lovelly street car!
