Title: Looking to Buy Rex next year
Post by: ferox on February 29, 2008, 03:14:12 PM
Hi all,

This is my first topic and i want your opinion on the following:

Im 18 and i am looking to purchase a Rex at the end of the year. Ive given myself a budget of about £6000 - £7000, Im confused on why some of the Rex\'s are 1.3 and others either 2.4 or 2.6.

I will have 2 years NCB. Is it worth be getting a Rex now or waiting until im older?

Many thanks
Jake:cool

It all depends on your driving experience and maturity, if you have no high pwer RWD experience then I\'d recommend you buy a cheaper RWD to run around in for a year, that will give you a good grounding on how a RWD  should handle before stepping into a rotary.

Or get a rex and don\'t take it over 4krpm for a few months, like mine because the 2nd turbo didn\'t work... :rollin
In hindsight I\'m glad it didn\'t work, I went from an FF golf 1.6 to a FR, the poodling around on the first turbo only is a good introduction to the 2nd, if only one could resist the temptation if it was there and worked!

like brett says, get a 200sx for £500. then after a year, get a rex matey. different kind of beast to what you probably used to. and you will have 3 years ncb

the reason i say this is, ive had th rex for 2.5 years and it still catches me out   lol

OK cheers guys thats sounds like a good idea. the only exprience i really had is my little Ka:Tongue1 and ive had 2 track days in a Ferrari f430 and Murchialago but nothing of great power on the road.

In terms of insurance is there anyone on here whos a young driver who has managed to get insured on a Rex. I know it will be pricy but can anyone give me a ball park figure?

Thanks, Jake!:Laugh

I reckon you either wont get insurance or you will be paying at least 3K plus.
Probably cheaper if you get your parents to insure it in your name then put put you as a second driver.
When you get your rex book an airfield day to help get used to what a powerful rwd is capable of.
Personally wait till you are 21 when the insurance will drop a lot

when i was 22 cheapest i could get with 3 years ncb was £1700, after 4 years at 23 i got it for £1200, but then after 2 years of owning it, it caught me out and i couldnt save it this time = spinning 360 in to a lampost and writing off my pride and joy that i finally got in a perfect state :(
told myself that i would never get an rx7 again after me and the girl who was in my car coming out completely unhurt (quite amazing considering).

caught me out on odd ocassions but this time it snapped out the (tyres were cold) and it went in to a spin.. so even after 2 years you have to be careful with these things.. so 18 = stupidy expensive insurace and no where near enough driving experience unless you do some kind of motorsport.. :((

i was in the same position, i ended up deciding the insurance would be a waste of money, so Ive spent 800 on an FC egi untill the insurance on the fd is about 1500-2000. Also its a great way of learning about a rotary vehicle so when it comes to the day i can own an fd ill be able to carry out most of the work myself. Though the plans slightly backfired because ill be wanting a turbo II next

I\'ve owned my fd for almost 2 years, bought it when I was 19... It might be an idea to own another rwd first. I didn\'t, but I had a 200hp 323 GTX that I played with for a year before the fd. If you buy a fd then just be mature enough to be a bit afraid when you floor it...

I don\'t want to pi$$ on your fireworks dude, but technically, that\'s fraud ;)
Insurance companies can and do investigate things like this, and you can just end up with an expensive bit of paper.

Ferox - I feel your pain - I\'d wanted one since i was about 14, then, when i was 21, a friend of mine got one - I was the most jealous person ever!
When i was 23, I got an S14a 200sx, and it was worth the wait (I\'d previously driven a succession of cheap low powered FWD cars to buold NCB) and then 2 and a half years later i sold it. 5 months later, and my FD finally arrived on my drive last week :D

It\'s a long wait, but omg was it worth it. I\'ve driven it once since it got here, but to just know it\'s there is enough, and to turn into my road on the way back from work and see it parked on my drive is just the most awesome feeling.:wiggle  Can\'t wait until i\'ve go the tweaks done and i\'m happy driving it :D

I really would go with the advice above about gettin gexperience - If you have to have (and can afford something rwd and fastish, get an S13 or an S14. Or, in retrospect (and what i should have done) get a Eunos :Thumbs-up  Drive that for a few years, get used to it, and work your way up, it\'ll make the FD taste even sweeter :D

Thanks SiH ill take your word... i been waiting 5 years whats a few more, it shall only sweeten it when i get one :P ill look into a smaller RWD car so that i dont kill myself or my rex when i get one.
