Title: The truth about imports
Post by: BioMech on February 27, 2008, 10:57:27 PM
Ok now as i\'m looking at the imports we get to Finland, I notice that they are all driven between 80 000-100 000 km\'s. Dooes this mean that a car like that needs a new engine then? The importing firms usually know what someone told em. "we bought it as in good condition" what does it mean then?

We have no rotary specialists here as the FD was never sold up here.
Is it just a stupid game if i go and buy one of those cars?

Are those japs doing rebuilds to those cars or just let them be? Atleast the skylines etc usally have stronger stuff in them but what\'s the deal with the FD? are they just selling all of those carts that are close to 100K?

I also see that many of the cars have some basic moda like induction kits and exhaust systems etc. is this because they are so cheap and easy to throw in or does it tell something more about the owner? Like has it been in good hands or so?

I\'m fustrated as my options are very limited. there is only few cars available now and my second option is to fly to the Uk and then throw the car in to a ship and fly home. No asking which one means more work. especially when i have no idea of the British registration things etc.

I just somehow don\'t want to belive  that 99% of the imported cars are more on the dead side than life side. Maybe i\'\'m trying to fool my self or something

Hey man, Welcome!

You\'ll fidn that most cars have aftermarket exhausts and intakes because they are cheaper to replace than OEM and also easier to get hold of, doesnt say much about the owner really, unless its a totally stock car and its stupid loud, then I guess you got a ricer on your hands lol

Buy and FD and enjoy it, they are great cars, if the engine goes why not have a go at rebuilding it yourself?

Read your mail with interest.  No idea why the cars the importers providing out there are 100,000 +.  However if they are on their original engine they will soon be needing a rebuild and that will need a specialist.

If you are buying an old car 92 - 95, the water seals are likely to be ready to go irrespective of the mileage and if you want to maximise your \'trouble free\' motoring you ideally want a much newer car.  There are lots available from importers in the UK.

HOWEVER!  If I were you, and I assume you live in Finland and want to drive the car in Finland, I probably would not buy an FD.  I love FDs and have had mine for over 10 years (and love it).  During the 10 years it has needed a \'specialist\' almost every year for one thing or another.  They are great cars but from time to time they need someone who knows about them to fix the issues you will have.  I imagine there are very few UK owners that have their car serviced by anyone other than an RX7 specialist (I see the flood of 3 responses saying I\'ve always had mine serviced by a Mazda main dealer).

I love them, but unless you are prepared to ship your car to the UK every couple of years, I wouldn\'t have one.

I say get one mate! If stuff needs doing then just treat it as a learning experiance & have a go yourself.  I\'ve had my FD for 3 years, bought it with basics mods knowing absolutely nothing about rotaries and not much about cars in general. now it\'s a 400bhp single turbo animal! Only ever been to a specialist once and that was when i first bought it! Done everything my self or with the help of mates, don\'t think there\'s anything i wouldn\'t have a go at on it now!
Get one & Get involved!

LoL I had all this before I got mine! Now I have the REX bug. I looked high and low for a rx7. I Found one,  full history,  WGT engine rebuilt, owner spend thousands and thousands on service (WGT) totally stardard bar wheels suspension and front de cat, I payed £4300 on a L 93. Just what I wanted!!! Its very very tidy.

Bugger me I found out a week later that the secondary turbo m-fold had cracked blowing like mad, it was also down on power. :(  The car had been patched with exhaust snot and one of the blowing studs glued in!
Private sale sold as seen!!!!!

So.... I got a second hand unit and did the job myself.

Had to get new turb studs= £117 (mazda very high tensile)
Metal gasket was broken= £25 (WGT)
second hand turbo unit= £250 (WGT)

All done now and the car is great the power delivery is unlike and other car and its on rails, 18mpg is a bugger tho LoL.

I have got myself a straight thru zaust (not fitted) and now im after a power commander ECU.

BUY ONE MATE!!!! but dont expect it to be cheap or reliable all the time! LoL

Why buy a fresh import? get one a uk owner has loved and cherished (import) then you can have more history! they are about.
