Title: recommend me a boost controller
Post by: marco on February 27, 2008, 04:26:56 PM
ok, after reading a bit both here and on rx7club website, i have decided i want a boost controller. i currently am running a street ported fd on stock twins with a pfc,  and i know that the pfc can control boost ok, but for one reason or another i want to use a standalone controller to do it. the controller is also going to double as a boost gauge, so it has to be pretty easy on the eye, and would prefer it to recall peak boost hit and if at all possible to show the boost graphically rather than just as a number (so it is easier to read at a glance). what would you guys recommend?
at the moment i am erring toward the blitz sbc-id range as it seems to do everything i want, is there any real benefit to using the more expensive type R over the type S? i know the type R is dual solenoid, but i take it you cant run those independently (shame as it would be usefully for running sequential twins!)  so what is the purpose? is it to run higher boost (which isn\'t really an issue for rotaries is it?) or to give quicker response?:3Confused

feel free to chip in with your opinions and recommendations, also any tuners out there who want to give their opinion on what they like to work with then that would be great!:Thumbs-up

I used a HKS EVC5 on mine and worked well and could flip from low to high boost with one button

On the Skybus I have Apexi AVCR which is good as well, with large display if maybe a little blue lol

i was thinking of the apexi if i could find one of the limited edition black ones, but i thought they were over complicated and the tuners didnt like them?

Had an AVC-R on the last car.  Looked really nice but wound me up no end with its crappy self learning.  Really hard to work with.

My \'7 has a GReddy Profec B Spec II, which is nice and easy to use and doesnt miss a beat.  Recommended by that man Pip too :)

ok, i take it the avcr is out. am sort of glad as i didnt fancy cutting into too many wires, and the head unit would be a pig to install neatly and unobtrusively.
i thought there would be a few votes for the greddy, and seeing how it seems to be one of the cheapest i guess it would be a decent choice. the only thing is the display. i take it it has all the other features such as peak hold, scramble etc etc?

boost start? does that up the boost for a certain period before dropping it down to a steady state level?

i believe it sets the level at which it starts to build boost

I have the SBC type S in the FC, couldn\'t tell you how good it is as it\'s been in the shop since I got the SBC! I know that Tim uses a single solenoid SBC in his purple Gen 1 drag car and he seems happy with it

right then, looks like it will be around £280 for the latest hks, (which does look pretty i must say!) which is from the uk, and £240 ( plus the usual import gamble) on a spec R sbc id from japan. thats with rhd japan and i have always got customs duties going with them, so i guess once parcel force stick their \'oh so well deserved\' handling fee on, they are going to be similar. Soooo, which one of these two should i go for?
