Title: Radio Arial and head unit wiring. HELP PLEASE
Post by: adamk on February 26, 2008, 03:13:40 PM
Hi, Since I have had my FD the radio when switched on in any source brings the arial up??

It should only come up when selected to radio should it not?

Anyway its doing my nut so I have ripped out the unit in an attempt to sort it out!

The unit is a 1 year old Pioneer, the units wiring diagram shows that the auto relay arial supply is blue I follow this through the loom all ok! ( turns out is hads propper nice looms fitted no nasty chops!)
When the radio is turned on and arial is up (again any source) when this blue wire is disconnected the arial goes down? then back up when re-connected?

Its almost that the radio "arial" supply can also be used as a remote on/off for other equipment ie amp, this is also supported with the units "fitting a remote amp" section.

This has got me scratching my head!!! can anyone tell me what the standard wiring is and please point me in the right direction, also what colours go the the mast/arial?

There are no other spare cores that can be used from the unit, I can only guess the loom is incorect for the car regarding the mast/arial control.

Please help

Much thanks
Adam

ive had the same thing it\'s much easier to send a 12v+ or ground when the unit is on rather than when the tunner is, i think a lot of them are that way unless you want to open the thing up and get rather techie you have no choice

I think 99% of radio\'s now have the aerial up as long as it\'s on, mostly for Traffic Announcements and RDS updates and stuff, so if you\'re listening to a CD and then the Traffic will come on instead.

Easy way is to just wire in a 2 way switch (about 90p from Craplin), then you can choose when to have the aerial up or down. I\'ve done this and it\'s handy for when local aerial down, CD\'s / MP3\'s on, when on a longer journey still listen to CD\'s and stuff but have the T.A. on.

Hum, ok thanks for your points.:wave
I have e-mailed pioneer tech support I cant believe an expensive unit like this does one not have this function output!:3Confused

If not then pioneer must be ****e!:Hammer

Ill let you know how I go on. I cant be doing with driving around with a huge whopping great CB Mast on the back of my motor with the Head unit on! it looks horrible!:2eek

Yes, It shall have to be a switch if not!, but its a sure bet some prat will rip if off if I park with it left up, unless I do some fancy relay type wiring to make it come down with 12v supply off even with swith on type of thing??? oh er!

For now I shall hang a huge pair of pants to hang from my huge mast!!! LoL:driving

Cheers
Adam

Hi

My Sony head unit only sends the 12V signal out to raise the mast if the tuner is selected.  It does however put the ariel up all the time if Traffic Announcements is selected.

Sorry it\'s not very helpful to you, but it maybe worth trying to turn the TA setting off as a last chance.

i have fitted quite a few pioneer head units over the years (just put mine in the rex yesterday) and they all definatley make the aerial come up as soon as they are turned on no matter what source they are on. pretty much all makes do this.

pioneer dont have the option that sonys have if the radio or cd is on ie the unit then the out put for the antenna is on aerial up .
a decent way round this why any one listens to radio beyond me all the interference . buy a digital unit have the areial inside the car no cb masts and have crystal clear sounds

My Sony only puts the aerial up when switched to radio (see a trend emerging here?), but doesn\'t even put it up for Traffic announcements. Maybe that\'s cos it\'s so old skool it still has a cassette slot (ask your dad!) :D .

I\'m so ashamed....

A switch to the aerial wire does this anyway, with the switch in the "on" position and the headunit on the aerial goes up, as soon as the headunit goes off or the ignition is off the usual signal is still sent from the headunit and the aerial goes down.

With the switch in the "off" position the aerial will never go up and if it\'s up when you switch it off it will go down.

Peice of pi$$, stick in a swtich, job\'s a carrot! :D

Just to finish off the subject, I got this from Pioneer this morning:

Hi,

The antenna will always be extended when the unit is on, no mater if your listening to radio, CD or any of the other units functions.

The antenna is needed for the RDS traffic announcements and also to allow the radio to retune in the background if you move from one transmitter to another.

We are aware that some users place a switch in the antenna activation line, allowing them to drop the antenna for car washes ect but this is not advisable when driving for the reasons above.
The antenna output is the blue line on the ISO adaptor, you should be able to obtain a latching switch from the manufacturer of the car to maintain its look.

Best regards,

To sum it all up with new pioneer head unit, You need a switch to drop the mast, however the mast will drop itself once the car is turned off as this power supply is lost once ignition is turned off.

Great Thanks everyone:WaveBye :WaveBye

You should have a aerial in the rear screen, so just disconnect the up/down aerial and use the rear screen one

this is the reason for it item 1 bellow a sony loom the pail blue is the antenna out put and the blue and white is the amp remote.seperate power feeds so the aerial goes up with radio on .
pioneers only have 1 out put doing both amp and aerial when the units on not switching :Thumbs-up
