Title: bought rx7 today
Post by: cyman on February 24, 2008, 06:17:22 PM
hi all

i took the plunge and bought myself back into rx7 ownership today. :Thumbsup! the car is a 1992 that needs a small amount of work to bring it back to where i will be happy with it.

the car has a rotechnics motor with 2k miles on it, a recon gearbox, new turbo technics turbos setup non sequential, full stainless cat less system, apexi fc ecu, greddy boost controler,

things i need to do as follows

either lengthen the seat runners by an inch or so or get a smaller steering wheel (i am 6\'4" and its ok but want that extra bit of comfort)
new set of tyres all round (running very old hard dunlops on standard wheels at the moment)
car starts on the button hot and cold revs and pulls great but there is a slight misfire at 6k revs. things i think maybe related to this are the interior lights pulse slightly on idle making me think that either there are bad earths or the alternator is on its way out. on the way home i turned the lights on and the misfire appeared to start 500-1k revs sooner then turned lights off and it went back to 6 k again.
the boot needs a spoiler and tidying from where an old spoiler was removed.

i bought this car at a very good price taking into allowance that i am going to spend a bit of time and money to sort these things out.

if anyone has any items/recomendations on any of the above (tyre reccomendations, thoughts on the misfire or bits they want to sell) please feel free to pm me or post here

cheers

Hi, and welcome! I found a smaller steering wheel and a spacer made a big difference, but I\'m three inches shorter than you. My personal tyre recommendation would be Toyo T1R, transformed my car for the better (at a price), though Goodyear Eagles seem good. Nice one buying a car with an ECU already on it. I always mean to get one sorted, and never quite get enough cash together! Pics, please!

there is a link for details on how to lengthen your seat runners in technical stickies but unfortunatley it doesnt work anymore so i think i will prob go the steering wheel route aswell. which make did you go for.

heya im from shepton mallet very near yeovil and have mates who live in yeovil and they only knew of 1 rx7 in yeovil which was a highly modded one with single turbo.  Never seen any other about round this way.  Must of been a quiet one you didnt ever see about.

Anyways welcome to the club and good choice of car :)

Er, some kind of Sparco one, can\'t remember the model. Its slightly smaller diameter than standard, but the combination of the boss kit and spacer means it sits a lot nearer/higher up, too. You can get spacers from Sparco, OMP, anyone like that from the usual suspects, Demon Tweeks, Funky Styling etc

The boss is the tricky bit, I couldn\'t find a Momo one to fit cos you need a hole for the horn wire to go through it (difficult to explain, but it\'ll become obvious when you take off the horn cover on the standard wheel and have a look inside). You seem to either need a Jap boss of some sort (NewEra do em) or be willing to drill a hole through a Momo-stylee one (which I reckon would be bleeding tough!). Or fudge some other route for the horn wire. Worth it, I reckon, it made it so much more comfortable to drive, and I\'ve now got a slight bend in my arms when on the wheel, so I feel much more in control.

just been reading through the paperwork from this car and found out it has also had a streetport when the motor was done and an uprated clutch fitted

update:::::

ive had the car 1 day and today i have managed to source a hatch with spoiler which we fitted straight away.
confirmed the pulsing was the alternater. fitted exchange one no pulsing and the misfire at hig revs has gone.
still havent found decent place to get tyres although i think i am going to get toyo t1 r,s
sourced 2 uk leather seats so have got them home and refurb\'d them this evening (trained leather specialist u c :chat ) also cos they are uk they have the longer runners so i can actually drive the car now instead of steering with my legs :2eek

all i have to do now is get a final run for the apexi fc so the setup is complete (couldnt be done before b\'cos of the misfire at the top end)
i may also look into getting some new bushes for the rear end they arent to bad at the mo but would be good to upgrade them.

bring on the summer :driving :driving :driving
