Title: Oooooh buggrit...
Post by: SiH on February 24, 2008, 02:34:35 PM
Over-exuberance with a ratchet and incorrect knowledge of how to loosen the belts has lead to this:

Anyone got any suggestions of a good fix?
cheers

omg! that musta have been some force to break that!

this might sound like a bit of a bodge but to get you going again id drill some holes on the top of the bracket. tap them holes, then get some hefty steel plate and then attach it to the top of the bracket. and then this will allow you to tension the belts again.

But tbh its best that you replace the mounting bracket for the powersteering and aircon. you will prolly get these parts from someone who has had a second hand engine or perhaps a tuner (tim at RXmotors has a big big cave full of parts so i hear!)

failing that get rid of the power steering and aircon and go to the gym - get Gurj sized arms, this might take a while tho.

haha I have dont this too!!!!!!! let me guess you did not undo the nut on the pully!

ok what you need to do is give Tm at RXmotors a ring they had one for me £25 or try and find one else where! only problem is you have to take off the power steering pump and aircon pump.
if you need anymore advice on it pm me

That\'s exactly what i did :(
The easiest sounding job always turns out the hardest - in this case - fitting an underdrive pulley kit :(

So far I\'ve got this, and an alternator bolt that won\'t budge :(

So Is it just a mounting bracket then? Are there 3 bolts that fix it? I can see two behind that pulley, and one at right angles to it - are there more? Looks like the PS pulley has to come off too, right? which is going to be a total mare as i can\'t get the nut off that either, and with no tensioner there\'s nothing to stop it spinning :(

What with that, my inability to shift the downpipe heat shields, and the fun i\'ve just had with the rat\'s nest, I hate this car already. :D

If you do that would be awesome :driving
Let me know how much you would want :cheers

I like the satisfaction of working on my own car, but I always manage to cost myself money :D However, I shudder to think how much it would xcost for me to get all of the stuff i\'m currently fitting fitted at a good garage.

only thing i pay a pro to do is map it lol.. i love to tinker too,.. most the time it turns out like 4 times longer to do the job but i know for the next time :D

Few years back i wouldnt even attempt an oil change myself.. now iv done almost everything bar rebuild an engine (coming soon tho lol)

im the same interloper i did work in a garage though and my dad bought and sold and tinkered with cars so i had some good knowledge to start but not about these wank-els :rollin except i have no garage so clutches diffs etc are off limits.

must admit every job on it does end up being 4 to...200 times longer! :p

You *NEED* an impact gun to get the alternator bolt off.

No other way mate.

The one and only time my brother ever did his own oil change on his bike, he didn\'t know the torque setting for the drain bolt on the sump, so he looked it up in the generic torque settings in his Haynes manual. Only trouble is, it was like a 17mm head on the bolt, so the manual said about 80 lb/ft or something outrageous. Not a good amount to put into an aluminium sump when the actual torque rating was about 12! Not only did the thread strip, the sump pan cracked, too. Ooops.

I only mention this cos it was extremely funny, and cos we\'ve all been there, dude!

Tim at rxmotors told me and it worked
double up the belt around that pulley and lash it to sommink it will tighten and you can then undo it. worked for me

my impact gun didnt move mine at all.. dunno why cus it s removed everything else lol..

hey nik the geek.. did u just win a earthing kit on ebay??

soak it in wd40 the night before or keep soaking it until u get the tools to remove it bud ..

theres a way a guy i know removed these nuts but its not for the faint hearted :S
lock the spanner or wrachet on the nut n crank the engine :S scary crap when i saw it happen lol

Might have ! :Laugh

I needed a few extra bits of wire to fill in the gaps on the one I\'ve got and yours seemed to fit the bill. I\'m still upset I couldn\'t afford your KnightSports cat, but it would\'ve been a long drive to collect it anyway (and I\'d be risking my wife going back native on me lol, she\'s from your side of the border!)

Sorry for the hijack

Well, I\'ve decided to do it properly and try to replace the bracket - I\'ve got the PS pump off, and got the two top bolts off the AC pump, but i\'m struggling to see how to get the pump off? From looking at the FSM there\'s two or three more bolts behind it that i need to get to get the bracket off, but i can\'t for the life of me see how to get the pump off?

Any ideas anyone? I\'ve bothered Draco more than enough by PM already, so thought i\'d open it up to the masses :D

the ac pump has 4 bolts, 2 at the bottom bud.. the front ones not too bad but the back rears a pig.. helps if you cn get someone to push the engine to the side that extra 1/2 inch.. i did it this way with a ratchet.

A knackers, i knew i\'d have to get under the damn thing :D
I\'m trying to do one job a day to get it ready for mapping before the track day - guess i\'ll do an oil change whileI\'m under there :D

Ring spanner or deep socket job do you reckon? There are 2 down the back for that bracket that look like spanner only jobs, so I\'m going to have to go buy a 14mm ring spanner, as sods law says i\'ve lost the 14mm and 10mm ones!

i did mine from the top bud.. got a socket in there tho :)

Socket it is :D So 2 bolts for the pump at the bottom, pump comes off, then i cen get to the rest of the bracket bolts i guess?

I\'m off to study the FSM again :D
Cheers dude :wiggle

Only got crappy phone pics at the mo, my drive is hardly an exciting location :D

Will get them up soon when it\'s back running again - I\'ve got to get it ready for mapping on the 13th, so unfortunately making her uber pretty may have to wait a while :(

Hurrah! All sorted!
Now, to find the PS pump bolt :D
Anyone know what thread it is? In my immense arsenal of bolts i haven\'t got one that fits :(
