Hi everyone, who has the aftermarket lights like mine?
http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg24/rotaryguru/ATT00001.jpg
I got failed on my MOT yesterday, because the beam has no \'kick off\'. I was showed what they meant, basically its so you don\'t dazzle oncoming traffic. My lights beam a full circle, but what should happen is there should be no beam from one segment, like missing from 12 till 3 on a clock.
Any help on how to correct this? He said i\'d need new \'UK\' spec lights, but heaps of people in MRC have them, how do you get through? I suggested tape, but he said the lights were too hot. Still going to try!
Other ideas? How do yours get through?
dont know on this one mate i had a friend with those fleabay tastic lights and it went thru the mot ????? so sorry cant help
same lights passed 2 mot\'s now no problem
just try a different garage, one that may be a bit more lenient
like the others said...try another garage.
You could try swapping your light units for hella ones, I have hella lamps in mine and they project a proper beam.
all lights have to have a cut of point ie about the height of the lights the beam is supposed to stop cut off so u dont dazzle oncoming traffic or the car in front
the cheap ebay light are like a light bulb
where do you find hella units??
I thought that if they had an E-mark (the E in a circle moulded into the front light glass) they were certified suitable for road use in Europe? Mine are ebaytastic lights like these, but have the E-mark and haven\'t had problems yet, touch wood.
Sadly I have heard of people with RX-7\'s having to put back on the standard lights to get a legal Mot,
To get the angled "cut off" you need the lines in the glass to make this happen and the projector lights don\'t have these lines and personally I have never seen any with lines
Unless somebody can come forward with a different solution I am sure you will find that of the 5 different types of Hella projector lights we can supply all have clear lens with no lines in the glass to produce the "cut off"
Sympathetic Mot man is the only aggro free way I personally know of unfortunately
I have not seen what a pattern from a typical projecter lamp looks like, but my lights throw what looks like a 150 degree "_/" shaped beam and definitely not a circle of light. I have got through 2 mot\'s with them on now. I have upgraded the bulbs in them and have never been flashed by other motorists for dazzling, I don\'t even get flashed when on high beam and I forget to go dipped!

so what sleek light kit do you have??
also where can i get some projector lamps as the "normal" lamps i have are very poor and one has cracked and ive been looking to replace them
i have the c-west kit btw
I have Nemesis Performance lights. They aren\'t anything particularly special, although they did supply them with some decent Hella lamps. It seems that Clive can sort you out some going by his earlier post.
Thanks lads,
They\'re not ebaytastic ones, they came with the car from Japan (so Japebaytastic probably)
Will look into the Hella lights, as an option.
I\'m not too familiar with the MOT system over here, won\'t they just look up in the system and see the other MOT didn\'t pass?
It only failed on the lights, and the hydrocarbons. Have to do more research on how to get those readings lower. Where can i get a litre of ethanol for the tank?
the hella ones have a shroud inside that creates a elongated z or s shape and cuts the light out above that line..hence the cut off
Plus e marks mean nothing as european cars normaly drive on the wrong (right) side of the road. Lighteing patterns i have heard are problematic for many aftermarket kits for fd\'s.
What lamp is used in your projector fitting.
I had problems with my first HID\'s as the bulb didn\'t have a cover at the end, so cast light straight forward. It was only a small percentage, but the MOT places are getting really strict now. If you drive your car up to a wall (not into :Laugh ), and check the beam pattern, on the dip pattern, most of the light should be cast downwards, and if you draw an imaginery line from the centre of the lamp to the wall, and then a horizontal line on the wall, the light should fall below it on dip and slightly more light off to the passenger side. Full beam should project straight forward.
The following diagram from the MOT test should help:

I found that with the covers over the top of the HID bulb , the pattern is much better.

What DO they mean, then? Not arguing with you, chap, it\'s a genuine question! I\'ve had endless grief off the plod for having non-E-marked stuff on various vehicles over the years and back in the day it used to be one of their favourite excuses for rousting the M*x P***r brigade and issuing Vehicle Rectumification Notices, so what do E-marks actually prove? Is it a Construction and Use thing, rather than a MOT thing?
Thanks Prof, thats what he showed me when the car failed, i\'m thinking of using tape to get the desired \'kick off\' effect..... :2eek
might work....
