Title: It\'s true what they say about drilled discs! Badly cracked on track.
Post by: lockwood77 on February 19, 2008, 01:04:44 PM
Well, these were on the car when I bought them and have survived two trackdays, but now the Mintex Xtreme pads are on, it was too much for them round Donington...

Yikes! that\'s nasty. Any idea what make they were, so I can avoid them in the future?

No idea sadly - the previous owner (Pete Taylor, he\'s on here) bought them from the States apparently.

Drilled discs always do that IME, doesn\'t matter what brand (unless they\'re cast with the holes in them = £££), just the nature of them sadly.

Slightly off topic, what exhaust setup do you run to beat donningtons strict sound level rescrictions?

I\'ve got a FEED downpipe, de-cat and 5Zigen backbox. Couldn\'t tell you what mid-pipe it is though, so not sure whether the de-cat and mid-pipe are silenced. It is very quiet - I had to change the backbox specifically for trackdays, cos the other one was a massive can that popped and banged at will!

The 5Zigen is more restrictive though - Pip said I\'d have a few more horses with the bigger can, but it\'d be pointless if I couldn\'t go on track!

i take it grooved doesnt affect the discs though??

they look really bad

I think it\'s the drilling that causes it, yeah. Grooved give you a nice rumbling sound when braking hard though!

i think drilled are ok when u get the big bucks versions..porche etc but budget ones will crack but even so that cracking is  bad

There have been cases of grooved also cracking, but they can take a lot more than drilled.

Even the Porsche cast drilled discs crack if given a hard life.

Dono is a great track with a good setup. God I miss trackdays.

I did a few track days on grooved disks and never had a problem, love the noise they make as well.

Donnington is great!
Title: Dimpled Discs
Post by: noyzboy on February 20, 2008, 12:36:11 PM
I saw a rally car recently that had dimpled grooved discs. i.e. not drilled right through.
Guy uses them after having a big off when a wheel locked on a cracked drilled disc.
He claimed they are still effective at getting the gases generated in braking out from the calliper area.
Interesting. I had not seen them before.
This could be the way to go.

EBC do the turbo grooved discs:

Basically dimpled, I\'ved used them in the past and with pretty good effect. Dunno if they come in FD sizes however...

Yeah, I used those EBC dimpled discs on my first DC2 years ago, they warped almost instantly (using Greenstuff pads too!) They weren\'t awful, but definitely a little shaky.

EBC SHOULD NOT BE USED ON AN FD!!!!

They are just not up to the job. Many have tried them in the past and some have even struggled on road use.

I\'d never use EBC on any car after my experience on the DC2. Red Stuff were on the FD when I bought it, but after a trackday I decided they weren\'t up to the task (not enough bite) so swapped to Mintex (which I\'m hoping I haven\'t knackerd on the cracked discs, cos they\'re nearly brand new!)

On my old Lotus I found that EBC discs were OK, but the pads were utter gob****e!

But good to hear that they\'re not that great on heavier cars... I think we got away with them in the Lotus\' as the cars were so much lighter.

EBC were the only discs I ever had crack on a bike (and that was a slooow old VFR!) though I did warp a set of PFMs quite comprehensively on my YZF. I would never put them on a car, they\'re clearly made out of something very much like cheese! With that said, I find redstuff pads fine on the road, though very messy with loads of dust. Maybe that just means I brake like a pansy! :Giggle

Mintex Extreme pads used on track did that to my discs as well, and there was nothing wrong with the discs before.

Mintex extreme pads should not be used on track. They are fine for the road.

Hmm, I know there was some extensive discussion about your experience Andy (or possibly someone else\'s?) My take was that Mintex pads have seen me right in the past and have been excellent on track on my DC5 (slightly lighter car in fairness, about 100kg or so), I would have thought with the correct discs (not sure if Mintex make them for the FD?), they would be fine in all conditions. Until the discs cracked, I must say they had been good and consistent.

The DS2500 are recommended by owners of various cars, but on the other hand some DC5 owners have reported very little difference in performance from OEM with them, so I didn\'t really consider them. Might have to now if the Mintex are knackered!

DS2500 aren\'t brilliant on the road, they take a while to get to temp. They seem to get better and better at the track however.

I had 2500\'s on my last car and they were brilliant - the poor braking ability from cold is greatly exaggerated - they\'re not THAT bad, but they\'re not great.
However, after one stop they quickly reach the level of stock pads - after that they just get better with every stop - they really are awesome pads. Never saw a touch of fade on track with my old ones, and i brake like an utter chump.

Interesting what Andy\'s saying about the Mintex Xtreme... I\'ve used Pagid in the past and AFAIK they\'re owned by the same people.

But the Xtreme range has been withdrawn and the website is no longer available, so I wonder if it\'s anything to do with this?

Really? Didn\'t know that - i know they were touted as a new super pad in the S-body world - then people tried them, and they were almost universally slated!

Problem i had with DS2500\'s were that they put a lot of heat into the discs, and had a tendency to leave a lot of deposits that lead to judder and needed cleaning off :(

In the interests of balance I have had EBC drilled and groved discs on my FD for almost 2 years now with no problems. Yet!

Hmm, do you think my pads might be knackered as well? :Laugh

I\'m assuming the uneven wear is due to warping, although the leading edge of both pads is the thicker end, so I would have expected the leading edge of one to be thin and its facing pad to be thick, with the opposite at the other end. Does the actual pattern (both thin at one end) suggest caliper damage, i.e. one piston stronger than the other?

Desperately hoping I don\'t need to recon the calipers as well! :(

Off to research discs & pads, any suggestions? Clive recommends his Racing Brake discs, not sure what pads now Mintex aren\'t doing them any more. Have also been recommended Project Mu (expensive?)

4 pot brakes dont move all together. They are paired with there opposite pot and 2 come in contact first than the second 2. This is the hole point of having 4 or more pots on your brakes as it gives you more progression on the brakes other wise you\'d just have massive 2 pots. I would say your wear is too uneven i would have thought you normaly wouldn\'t be able to see the uneven wear of pads. Maybe caliper problem.
I think my pads are project mu, i\'m guessing as they are light blue not as dark as endless, anyway they work very well even from stone cold i think the effective range is 0 to 400c make a very good street pad and ok for track days, i don\'t know for sure but i would say not good enough for a full on track car.

Thanks Timmy, makes sense. Doesn\'t sound too good for the calipers though... :(

OK, Clive\'s diagnosis is that a piston is sticking and that they need re-greasing. Having not lost any fluid, I should be OK in terms of seals, so it\'s just a case of working the pistons out one side at a time and spraying with grease.
