Title: Fuel pump problem?
Post by: mmt76 on February 18, 2008, 10:16:31 AM
Hi everyone,

I\'ve been lurking on here for a while now and it\'s finally time for me to make my first post, or should that be a plea for help?! Well, I went to start the car last night (a \'93 stock twin-turbo) and it just wouldn\'t fire up; on one or two occasions it did fire briefly, getting to about 1k revs but then dying. I tried the usual flood start routine but still nothing, so got the RAC out and the guy reckoned the fuel pump was playing up. The car had been acting a bit strange recently, having stalled twice whilst driving quite normally, and mis-firing more often than normal. Unfortunately I really don\'t know my way around a car though, so I need to get it to a decent garage within 10 miles of Hythe, near Southampton - does anyone happen to know of any? Ideally I\'d like to take it up to Carl in Newbury, but the RAC want £200 for that, so I\'m hoping I can get it sorted locally - does it sound like something that could be sorted out by a non rotary specialist? Sorry it\'s not the greatest of introductions, but hopefully someone out there can give me some advice. :-)

Regards,

Mike.

Fuel pump issues are fairly quick and easy to work your way through if you have a half a few decent tools mate. Its worth taking a look yourself and then taking it onto a garage if you can\'t ascertain the actual issue. Its probably cheaper to just stick a new fuel pump in than pay a couple of hours labour to a garage to do it. There are plenty of people on here who could point you in the right direction. Failing that any semi decent garage will be able to do fuel pump diagnosis.

Cheers for the reply - I\'ll get the previous owner to have a look at it as he knows the car and actually has some tools unlike myself; hopefully it\'s something fairly trivial.

And if you lift up the boot carpet you\'ll see a silver thing with some wires going into it... The Fuel pump lives under here :D

Ok Dave, I\'ll get back to you about that - I\'ve been told it\'s probably worth replacing just the filter to begin with before shelling out money on a pump; can you get these from Halfords or would I have to go to Mazda direct?

Yep, £18 from Hendy Mazda in Eastleigh - it seems to be just a 2 minute walk from where I work. They said they\'d be happy to take a look at it too, but hopefully it won\'t come to that. ;-)

dyou know how the rac guy came to the conclusion it was the pump?
Have you tried jumping the fuel pump or try bridging the GND and FP terminals in the diagniostincs to see if the fuel pump comes on. If you suspect the pump,  check to see what voltage you are getting at the pump on cranking...

Ok thanks Jit, I\'ll get Chris to check that. By the way, Mazda need my chassis number so I can order the fuel filter, does anyone know where this is located?

lol...Cheers Ash, don\'t know why Mazda should really need it just to order a part. I think I\'ll end up ordering it from somewhere else anyway as they\'re now quoting me £51 for the filter, which seems a little steep!
