Title: could this be the problem?
Post by: rico2k_uk on February 15, 2008, 12:50:56 PM
as most of you know, there has been a slight technical issue with my rx7 - huge plumes of white smoke at the back! the thought was that it could possibly be the water seals.. hopefully not.

however, thought id give the turbos a quick look over to see if it could be the turbo seals. now when i started to take apart the pipework, there was not too much excess oil all over the place. there were some pools of it in the creveses of the hoses and things, but otherwise its not bad.

went to check the blades (which is quite dificult to get to!) to check movement, etc. this is what i found:

Some of the parts removed - i will try and clean!

the space left after removing everything - going to keep the air pump me thinks!

The turbo wheel :(

Something i found in the entry elbow - god knows where that is from!!!

Here is a quick vid of me playing with the wheel!!

I think i might be in the market for a new turbo pack! has anyone got one for sale? preferably one that has been modified for non-sequential, but at this stage any will do!

Thats crazy!!!! i would also get a comp test done just to make sure it hasnt put bits of metal in the engine and knacked it.

yeah, comp test up here is neigh impossible!! i just cant figure out where this nut came from, its a strange shape. the turbos were supposidly rebuilt a couple of years ago as well!

tbh, i am actually pretty happy with this situation. i can deal with a new set of turbos rather then the whole engine! :D

wtf?! Is it possible when fitting something that you got that washer caught and it found it\'s way into the intake?
That\'s some serious damage - If your engine is ok you\'ve been a very, very lucky man...

ive not been doing anything that would cause that! so its might have been in there a while :(

The nut\'s off the turbo shaft that holds the wheel on. It\'s come loose and damaged the wheel. Wow that is bad though. It must have done serious damage to the engine. Time to go single.

thats what i thought. not a good rebuild on a turbo if that happens! ill get a new turbo pack cause that wont be a hugh amount of dosh, refit and get a comp test.

So was the turbo rebuilt then? For the cost of rebuilding these, it\'s more feasible to go single

i dunno.. thats what jim kept saying before i bought the car off him. im not convinced anyway. tbh, i wont bother rebuilding, they can go to the scrappy. will just buy another standard pack from someone who is going/has gone single. ill keep them non-sequential tho.

if your lucky the intercooler will have caught the bits. but as said earlier you lucky if your engine is good

yeah, the intercooler looked pretty clean inside. i have taken that off quite a few times recently before the big bang and never saw anything untoward. fingers crossed, but i have been expecting to be buying a new engine so it wouldnt be a bad shock. i am just hoping alot that i replace the turbos all will be well again! :D

car is still for sale ;) lol

Jesus, that\'s a horrible thing to see! Good luck with it, hopefully none of the serious shrapnel made it past the intercooler. Fingers crossed for you, chap, it was something similar that mullered my first motor.

well having looked at the blades, there isnt actually much missing from the blades. they have been chopped a bit, but its all still there, just bent around the place. i might be lucky, but i have yet to see the secondary turbo! having a bugger of a time trying to get all the kit off! the uim was a nightmare to start with! not looking forward to putting it all back together again. might just take it up to interloper393 or someones to get them to help while doing full non-seq conversion ;)

The turbo pack is a real bastid to get off and im not joking. Make sure you have a good socket set and plenty of patients.Craig likes getting his hands dirty, so  let him do it:flamed :Giggle

lol! well, i am trying to get to it all. ill dump the airpump while im at it and fit all the blanking plates. gives me a good excuse to rip out the rats nest for the non-sequential mod which i was going to see if interloper can do for me.. only prob is that the car cant exactly move under its own steam! :D

that look pretty bad, white smoke normaly indicates a leak into the hot side somewhere to.
Jason @ super7 gave me a call this week and told me my turbo was fooked. I must say tho i was rather pleased with the price i was quoted on rebuilding it.

no point in rebuilding. cost in rebuild is not much less then getting a single. im not keeping the car, im only bringing it back to perfect condition rather then increasing any more performance. so will get a good nick twins for the next owner, and will install it all to make sure its back to full health.

Just to bear in mind. I can tell you it is far less to rebuild than a single turbo conversion. Remember single turbo requires turbo oil water feeds manifold and down pipe so the turbo on its own is only a little more but the job requires all the bits to make it work not to mention a remap.

yeah, rebuild is cheaper, but economics of it all would to me be more worth while getting a single conversion done. but tbh, its cheap enough just to buy some second hand twins to get the car going again. :)

cheers mate.. yes i played all day ;) i like poking holes!! :D

i will probably need your help, especially when putting things back together. if i get you to help there, might as well get the non-seq conv done properly with your help.

would you need my car up at yours, or would you be able to cme to mine?

Nice you found the problem.  The same happened on my TII, nut never came of though !! but luckily none of the debris found its way past the cooler, so its not always doom and gloom when the turbo goes.  Going single is the best option, plenty of 2nd hand manifolds and exhausts to get you started but buy a new turbo for what they cost.
