Hey everyone. Is there any way to tell if the cat on my 92 rex is knackered. Is it possable to pull it off the car and tell by looking inside?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Regards
Phil
pick it up and shake it
easiest way is that as bits should basically fall out or just swap it and test.
bit cruel the rspca will be after u:rollin

Mr veilside beat me to it lol
yep if it is off its food and looks a wee bit wobbly then its not got too long to go. Sorry to be the bearewr of bad news. maybe try a dog next?? they live quite long i\'ve heard.
cheers, michael.
I wouldn\'t mind seeing a seroius answer to this question myself
As someone said, i dont think there is a definative test except taking the cat off the car and shaking/upending it. when i did mine half of its guts fell out onto the floor.
i do know a symptom can be that the cat will overheat in trafic causing the heat warninglight to come on, perhaps also a rattle from the lose baffles inside? hope that helps :Thumbs-up

So basically you just take off the midpipe and give it a good shake? If it was a bit broken up would the bits not be flying out of the exhaust anyway (avoiding the need to check it)
off there food hair loss lethargic attitude ?

That may well be just a flea allergy, mate. Get some Frontline or similar treatment on it, works wonders!
Our cat found it quite hard to jump up onto thing like the couch, back end went out on it. Know all about that one myself now!
:Laugh this post has me tickled

ok a cat is basically a block of precious metals that in the corect order filter the harmfull emmissions and convert them into h20 an other less harmfull gasses cat converters have many faults and problems the easiest to see and hear is the rattle the block becomes loose and bangs about .
2 the cat its self can suffer from pertrol flooding if the engine is to rich the leading edge odf the cat and soak fuel and set fire to iself internally melting the front edge and creating poor performance as the filter rate is to grate
3 oil can do the same without the fire but can block the small holes in the cat causing a ristriction and again lack of power .
you can have the cats sent away for testiong or an mot sniffer can give you a good idea if its coking blocked or not working . hope that helps after my funny five mins :WaveBye

You cannot, the buggers wont go in their box without clawing your hands off :rollin
aaaaaaaaaaapmfsl
Oh Dear, guess I had that one coming
Guess I should have been more more specific, the furry cat seems fine, but if it keeps attacking my feet at 2 am it may well get shaken too!
Thanks for the advice on both, will pull it off the car (RX7 Cat that is!!) and have a look. This could well be the problem as the air pump was disconnected when I bought the car (knackered so they took the fuse out) and have no idea how long it was like that.
Suppose this would cause un-burnt fuel to soak in the leading edge of the cat, and now I\'m running the air pump, maybe the cat has had enough (probably both types).
Thanks guys
Doesn\'t running a cat with the air pump not working knacker the cat through having it overheating all the time? I s\'pose that\'d accelerate all the little cell walls in the matrix breaking down, but wouldn\'t that make it less restrictive, rather than more?
well i think my cats used its 9 lives up, when im on boost it gets really load as it exhaust has a big hole in it.
so i am going to cut it out tomorrow at work and see what happens

Not sure, thought these things got bunged up without the air pump working.
Thinking of going de-cat and get the guy\'s at REWORX to spin it up on the dyno to check it\'s not running lean.
Guess the neighbours will have to put up with the loud exhaust until my racing beat arrives in april.
Think having a cat and no air pump working does shorten the life of the cat.
As others have said take it off and you may well be able to see whats going on inside. Poor performance is defo one offender but testing it at an MOT station will indicate if the HC content is way too high. Higher temps due to blockage is serious and will kill your engine, so best play it safe and either go de-cat or get the cat checked. With the airpump you only need to electrically disconnect the plug on the pump, make sure the fuse was pulled for no other reason as it could be an electrical fault and blew the fuse, so they just took it out. Not sure if the pump has a dedicated fuse ?? might be worth seeing what else it covers to play safe.
Thanks for the info. Pump was definately knackered, bearing was screaming when the fuse was put back in so this has been replaced with a second hand unit. Fuse was also for the air con pump too which also spins up ok too now.
Will get the cat removed asap over the next week or so and hopefully finally get the car running properly.
